Assassin’s Creed 2 PC Crashes, Freezes, Errors, Can’t Connect, Stuttering, Choppy and More, Fix and Fixes

DRM issues aside, Assassin’s Creed 2 is an awesome game and a truly excellent sequel to the original Assassin’s Creed. “Major improvement” basically comes into mind when playing AC2, unfortunately, so do “glitchy,” “crashes,” and a whole lot of “errors.” So if a number of gamebreaking glitches are preventing you from ridding Italy from corrupt politicians then check out the fix guide right after the jump.
IMPORTANT:
- Update your nVidia and ATI video / Graphics cards to their latest drivers.
- If you have encountered problems or solutions not listed in this guide, feel free to post it in the comment section below. No registration required
- Be sure that your PC meets Assassin’s Creed 2 system requirements:
Supported OS: Windows XP (SP3) / Windows Vista (SP2) / Windows 7
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core2 Duo or 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 (2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 or AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ or higher recommended)
RAM: 1.5 GB Windows XP / 2 GB Windows Vista, Windows 7 (2 GB / 4 GB recommended)
Video Card: 256 MB DirectX 9.0c–compliant card with Shader Model 3.0 or higher (512 MB recommended) (see supported list*)

Problem #1: Assassin’s Creed 2 won’t launch
Possible Solution #1:
Restart Steam and your PC.
Possible Solution #2:
Re-download Assassin’s Creed 2 PC
Problem #2: Assassin’s Creed 2 freezes / crashes at message “ Please wait until saved games are synchronized from server “
Possible Solution #1: (By Ubisoft Support)
To bypass this, you’ll need to disable the option to store saves online and delete the storage folder. To do this:
1. Start the game, when the game launcher appears click on the gear icon at the top right of the dialog box.
2. A dialog box should appear asking you to disable saves from being stored online, click Yes. Exit the Ubisoft Game Launcher and the game.
3. Go to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher. If you have the 64bit version of Windows you’ll need to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher
4. Open the settings.ini file (you can use Notepad for this).
5. While the settings.ini file is open and look for the last line if it says “SaveOnline=true”, set this to false so it should say “SaveOnline=false”.
6. Click on file and then choose Save.
7. Finally, delete the “storage” folder, it should be located in the same directory (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher).
8. Run the game, it should bypass this problem now.
Problem #3: Assassin’s Creed 2 PC encounters spinning white circle and an error message: ” An Internet connection is required to play this game. Failed to connect to the Ubisoft master servers. Please verify that your Internet connection is functional and try again ” despite being connected to the internet.
Possible Solution #1: (By Ubisoft Support)
This problem may have to do with connecting through a proxy server to connect to the Internet. The Ubisoft Game Launcher uses the Windows settings for the http proxy, but some configurations could experience problems. If you connect to the Internet through a proxy, please try the following:
1. Locate the settings.ini file located in the installation directory of the Ubisoft Game Launcher (C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher)
2. Open it with Notepad, and add the following at the bottom of the document:
[ProxySettings]
ProxyHost=proxyhostname:proxyport
OverrideProxySettings=1
You will need to change the proxyhostname and proxyport to the values setup for your proxy. You can USUALLY find this information by:
1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools –> Internet Options
2. Click on the Connections Tab and click on LAN Settings.
3. The Proxy HostName (address) and Port can be found in this window.
If you don’t know this information or are unsure how to find out your proxy settings, you may need to contact your ISP or network administrator for that information.
Problem #4: How to play Assassin’s Creed 2 in windowed mode?
Possible Solution #1: (By KingDaniel0 from the Ubisoft forums)
*Try Pressing ALT+ENTER or Alt-Tab.
*Also try changing any variable like Fullscreen to 0, Inside the Assassin2.ini config file.
But I Don’t think you can properly Force AC2 to run in windowed mode ? BUT, Try using this Tool, which I’m giving. Follow the instructions carefully.

You need to Select DirectX 9 from the option ‘DX version to Hook’, as AC2 is DX9 only, and then click on the OK button.
Try it first, and see what happens.

DL the program, and then Select the Game’s exe e.g. AC2.EXE, and click on the RUN button. But First make sure to *Check/Tick* the option Force Windowed Mode, under the Performance heading/tab.Assassin’s Creed 2 PC
Problem #5: Can’t use the Xbox 360 controller while playing Assassin’s Creed 2 PC
Possible Solution #1: (By Khemitude from the Steam forums)
Thanks to Khemitude, there is now a fix so the game properly supports the wireless Xbox 360 controller. This download fixes the triggers that are unusable in the game except for cameras.

Please note that this is a community fix. The wired X360 controller works as it should, do not download this if you don’t have a wireless X360 controller for the game.
Problem #6: Assassin’s Creed 2 stutters / is choppy when moving the camera using the mouse
Possible Solution #1:
Attach a Xbox 360 controller or any alternative controller besides a mouse when playing Assassin’s Creed 2 PC.
Problem #7: Assassin’s Creed 2 PC crashes to desktop / CTD

Disable Vsync, multi-sampling and turn down environment detail
Problem #8: Assassin’s Creed 2 encounters crashes / freezes / hangs while playing
Possible Solution #1:
Disable access to some of the cores while running Assassin’s Creed 2 PC.
Possible Solution #2: (By Ubisoft support)
We would like to suggest that you close down all background applications before loading the game, just to be sure that nothing is conflicting with the game.
·Close down background applications:
Click Start > Run > type msconfig > Click the Startup tab > Click Disable All button > Apply > OK, and restart your computer.
·Delete the temporary files from your computer:
Click Start > Run > type %temp% > OK > click Edit > Select All > Delete.
Possible Solution #3: (By wangzhe0129 from the Ubisoft forums)
A, update the graphic card driver and sametime the chipset driver as well, make sure that all those drivers are up to date.
B, Update the directx through Microsoft.
C, Upgrade the RAM as many as possible.
Because I’m still Using Windows XP, I have upgraded my RAM from 2G to 3G. I just realised that from monday till now, I didn’t encounter any freeze problem at all. and the game runs very smoothly, and just now I just complete the whole game. at least by any chances i wont need to login to that game again.
PS: This is just my situation and i’m not sure if it’s really going to work on your computer, cos everyone have a different specs of the computer. I just wish you all can be able to solve the problem and enjoy the story.
Problem #9: Assassin’s Creed 2 has no dialogues sound while playing or during cutscenes / cinematic
Possible Solution #1: (By worldcitizen777 from the Steam forums)
I have a Realtek onboard Azalia high definition chip. Using Windows 7 64 bit. I downloaded the latest drivers from Realtek. With the Realtek driver installation you have to first uninstall the previous drivers and reboot. After uninstalling and rebooting I checked the game out and sounds had returned so it was the DRIVERS. Apparently with just the generic Windows drivers the game works. I might try installing the latest 64 bit drivers and see if sound again disappears.
So users with Realtek onboard sound who are using Windows 7 64 bit UNINSTALLING your sound drivers and using just the Windows default drivers should get sound back again.
Possible Solution #2: (By earalia from the Steam forums)
I had this problem myself, but figured out what was wrong. Here’s what I did (Assuming Windows Vista):
1.) Go to Control Panel
2.) Go to Sound
3.) In [Playback Options] tab, select the current device you use for your sound, and select the [Configure] button.
4.) Change your audio channel to “Stereo” (Mine was set to 7.1 Surround as default).

When multisampling is on ( from 1 to 8 ) and not 0, characters are trasparent to any light effect.
using nvidia GTX275 under windows vista ultimate 32bit, that issue was resolved by removing latest nvidia drivers and installing previous version. Now under windows 7 ultimate 32bit the bug remains even with the old drivers

When I click story mode, it says it is establishing a connection and to please wait, but it NEVER ends! I have started and restarted the game and every once in a blue moon this doesn’t happen. Anything I can do to fix this?

I’ve got a combination of problem #2 and #7. It have crashed a couple of times until now, but right now it’s when Ezio has returned to the villa and follows Mario in to discover a hidden codex-page (i think the “mission” is called “changing of plans”). Exactly when Ezio reaches the doorstep, it crashes despite where Mario is.

When I am playing,the game runs so slow.I mean it’s really uncomfortable to play because it lags a lot.
Only when I’m in the loading white stage of the animus do I get like the console game kind of frame rate and also when I’m firmly on the ground and I look down while running.
Please if anyone can help me much appreciated.Also when I go to the third map the grassy looking palace in the assassin tomb.I do it fine until I get to some guards.Then it goes slow and I pray it wont crash or freeze.I go with out crashing and then I get to the next place with the guards in golden armor and tons of other weaker guards roaming the halls.I take a few steps and it turns black.My computer starts trying to set up the display and then if lucky,turns back to normal but right after it does it turns black again and sooner or later just freezes and says “Not Responding”.Its only for this area.
Also,one time my whole computer crashed and turned blue saying that it had to shut down in case if any damage was going to happen.It says “display driver stopped working”its all blue with a bunch of codes and digits.
Please someone help me.

I bought the game a few days ago and found it wouldn’t start in win 7 64bit. It giving me the followin message …..AssassinsCreedIIGame.exe – Entry point not found
The procedure entry point D3DChecktextureRequirements
could not be loccated in the dynamic link library d3dx9_42.dll.
since ive a dual boot system i started the pc with vista 64bit and hey presto! it worked ………..ish, now ive found that it froze when leonardo hands back the now mended blade! once its starts to save that particular part of the game it freezes, so, I tried a few things by tinkering with the AA and all other kinds of things to find that yes, the game starts and loads from last save, then have to go through whole scene again of mending the blade at leonardo’s workshop, the scene finishes, and wait for it!!!!! it damb well froze at exactly the same point! so I tried again to no avail and having read loads of hints and tips to tweak this that and the other as a “possible” fix I thought, sod this for a game of soldiers, why the hell should I be put in position where I could potentially %@** up my system all for Ubisoft’s ultimate cockup?
Ubisoft, sort it out or quite simply I have my money back please, and if i find my system is cocked up after all this crap, I’ll have a new system to replace my watercooled quad xfire system TA very much!!!

My porplem with assassin’s creed 2 is the fact that at random times in the game it will total freeze and lock up my computer so i have to push the power button to turn it off and restart im not sure if its my cimputer but this is the only game ive seen this happen to

My monitor went black after about the first 5 minutes and it was showing a clip. What is going on? My graphics card is supported and the monitor is still on. When I turn my monitor off then on again, it shows gives me a clear pic for 2 seconds then goes black again. Help anyone?

I have Nvidia 7600 Gt(2GB ram, Intel Dual 3,2). With the first AC i didn’t have any problems, though i can’t play the second one.
The game has major lag issues (all the graphics are at the lowest possible levels) but still its the same.Can you please give me a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance!

When I go to Venice it ALWAYS crashes on that cut scene where the animus was “reconstructing” the city. As my save file continues from there I have no choice BUT TO WATCH THE DAMN THING FREEZE every single time :\
-following some tips here. HOPEFULLY they work, as this is one of those few games I actually bought trying to be a little supportive to purchasing games and all that…

ok this problem seems rare as i havent seen ANY fixes and only 1 other person with the same problem.
when i boot assassins creed 2 (with the launcher) it goes through the updater and then it comes up with an error saying: Unable to find the Ubisoft Game Launcher, please reinstall assassins creed 2 (already done that)
Ubisoft Game Launcher:
error code: 1.
It even does it on the game exe (not the autopatch launcher).

I have the same problem as venicelag. Every single time I load my save it freezes on the reconstruction part. It is REALLY frustrating since this has to be one of the best games I have ever played. I have tried going through the whole game again but still no difference, freezing at the same goddamn spot.

this is stupid
i installed the game on two computers now when i play on the first one then i quit and i play on the second one (Diffrent locations)
now when i come back to play on the first one it loads up an “update launcher window” then gives me a microsoft error
i restarted and it works again
but on the second time this happend even a restart doesnt help
and NO ONE is playing with this account on the other computer
so what the hell?

Ok I have the same problem as BOB, i just installed the game and launch it downloaded the update and everything is ok but when I run the game it loads then when a small window for update appear it stop and gives me Launcher has stopped…..

I’m too, stuck in San Marco’s tomb…
Right in the beginning when I enter the Basilica the four stones(Books) are already ready to be pushed, I don’t need to interact with the first skull that shows on the altar…
After I finish the 4 Challenges the ground opens and I can go down to the tomb… I open the treasures but I’m unable to interact with the tomb…
Any thoughts on how to fix this?…

I’m encountering a problem at the mission “Change of plans”. When I enter the house with Mario he stops talking but the game dosent load the sequence when Ezio read the letter.I’ve already re-instaled the game but the problem continues Please help me.

i have problem with sound if i choose my twin usb gamepad as controller. but everything is normal if i choose keyboard and mouse.

Seems the problem persists, I am, aswell, blocked in the Fifth tomb at san marco, I have placed the values file in my install directory but it still persists.. maybe becouse I am also stuck inside the tomb, I cant get out of it, nor abort the memory… anyone knows a solution THAT works for this bug? even for those still stuck inside it

Hey! My game works fine but when i go to the first mission of sequence 14 it says to collect all codex pages i have 29 codex pages the only one im missing is page 11 and the game says the codex pages are now viewable throughout the world but i even climbed all view points and the codex page still doesnt appear on the map. If someone has a save file with all 30 codex pages (but not the whole game completed).Please upload it or give me a link.I want to play this game so bad ive been waiting for this for like 7 MONTHS and this problem came up. Crashes during 5 minutes of gameplay. It all started when I uninstalled mass effect 2 on my PC
Ive deleted all temporary files, the drivers are updated, my hardware is beyond the requirements, etc.
Point is, EVERYTHING’S REALLY FINE UNTIL I UNINSTALLED MASS EFFECT 2 on my PC. I cant figure out how its related to the crashes. Something to do with the registry? Idk.

Hi guys, I just found that my Razer Salmosa mouse drivers will crash Assassin creed. So just remove any razer programs that you have and the game will run smoothly.

When i start the game i can play no problem. he gets into the machine, you do the kid thing. then you get out of the machine, run around, kick some security gaurds ass in a parking lot and then i get put in a trunk
where i never come out of??!
if i try load the game at this point, i go into the white room and never come out.
I just cant progress at all. its not a crash or a freeze. i can move in the white room no problem and when im in the trunk of the car the cinimatic plays over and over and over.
I have followed and performed almost every recommendation in the above fix list, all start up programs, disabled, not saving game on the server, graphic card and chipset drivers upto date.
Whats next?

ALL FIXES FROM MAIN POST ARE FOR GENUINE COPIES. All razor mouse software will cause AC II to crash, so uninstall them.
ALL THOSE WITH PIRATED OPERATING SYSTEMS FOR WIN 7 (WIN 7 RC, OR MODDED WIN 7 RETAIL) OR PIRATED AC II , YOU ALREADY KNOW DAM WELL WHY NOTHING IS WORKING FROM MAIN BUG FIXES

I’m having a problem with my AC II. Well you see I’ve downloaded this AC II from Skidrow and Installed it in my PC. Everything worked fine except there is this “Unable to find the Ubisoft Launcher, please re-install AC II” error code 1. I’ve re-installed the game several times but still the same problem. deleting the ubisoft launcher folder didn’t do the trick…
I think this one has been cracked so I think I can play offline. I’m running a windows 7 64bit OS. and my specs are more than enough to run the game.
Could anyone please help me? I’ve wanted to play this game very badly!!!

you’re not supposed to delete the ubisoft launcher folder. you have to replace ubiorbitapi_r2.dll with the cracked one and you’ll be able to launch the game.

I have a different problem.My game crashed the first time when i tried to start a new game.I was able to see the player , i mean the character and the other stuffs loading like in assassins creed 1 but it immediately crashes to desktop with no error.My pc meets the recommended specs but i use the cracked version…..Does any one have the same problem?

uhm I mean I delete the folder before I re install the game. Then After re installing I put biorbitapi_r2.dll and skidrow.exe to the ubisoft game launcher folder. Still nothing happens. It keeps on saying “Unable to find the Ubisoft Launcher, please re-install AC II” error code 1.
But I’ve tried installing it on win xp and it worked!!!! How come win 7 64bit cant find the UGL folder???
Anywayz I still want to play AC2 on win 7 coz the game plays faster than in win xp…

The game is great, but it started to cause trouble when i reached the “Change Of Plan” level. After I enter the villa Mario freezes in his place and don’t move to his room where he is supposed to show me the codex!!!!!!! and so the game just stoped there (i could still roam around the world but the campaign isn’t progressing plzzzzzzzzzzzz help!!!!!!!

After I installed AC II, I tried to launch it, but when I reach the Ubisoft Autopatch it occurs an error.
Trying to get update information to C:\Users\***\AppData\Local\Temp\ubi1545.tmp.
Found update (Patch, all, all).

Fatal download error (Connect failed).
Deleting downloaded data.

For those people having trouble with the freeze when Leonardo gives you the hidden blade: You have to press the corresponding weapon number key for the hidden blade. In my case it was ’2′.

If you get no sound at all in the game (other than the ubisoft intro) go into sound options, select your speaker output then in the advance tab set it to 24bit/16bit 44100Hz mine was set at 48000hz and sound was working only once in a while and putting it at 44100hz made it work all times

I got a problem when i got collected all the feathers mother of ezzio is giving me auditore cape and after that i cant move im syuck in the maria room. Another strange thing is after i restarted the game there is again animation with maria holding ezio but maria is missing in animation so ezio holds the air and message informs auditore cap aquired and i cant move only turn around help pls

Well, I can’t sprint/free run if my camera is facing at my back (So the thing I wan’t to jump to is in front of me, and the camera is pointed at Ezio’s ponytail). I can only free run if the Camera is pointing sideways

while playing assassins crred 2, Ezio will randomly stop walking. it is not my keyboard i am sure of it
but it is intensely irritating especially when running away from guards.
to be clear the problem is that my character (either Ezio or Desmond) will randomly stop walking/runnin/moving during gameplay.
please help ASAP

In my case the raptr client turned out to be the bad guy, and to cause AC2 to freeze randomly. I followed the guide lines in this blog — to no avail as long as I kept raptr running. Once I decided to run AC2 without raptr supervising it, the game never froze again. So, worth a try.

I’ve found a solution to a freezing problem, everytime I went into Romagna/Forli the game would hang either just before entering the city or just as I enter, usually. So I turned it so the camera was pointing at the ground and ran/walked into the city, it’s worked everytime for me so far. It’s stupid I should have to do this but what can you do? I kinda wish I had a 360, one of the worst ports I’ve ever played, thanks ubi.

I have never before had problems with ac2 pc, but when i tried to launch it, it says i dont have an internet connection, but I do have a high-speed internet connection, and earlier today it worked fine…:(

my pc just crashed!! so i had to reinstall my ac2 but the problem is that whenever i try to install the game it launches the uninstall wizard and then it says game proparly uninstalled but still if i try to launch the installer the same thing comes up .

Hey there people,
For the problem#3 –> Not being able to connect to the server. There is just one simple thing that needs to be done.
It Certainly cures this problem, It did for me.
So what you gotta do is, Open
C:/Windows–> System32–> Drivers–> etc–> Hosts.
Now you need to open this file with notepad and check whether there is any stuff written below the lines starting with a “#”.
If there are some numbers, or anything AFTER the Lines beginning with a “#”, You would have to delete all those lines.
You gotta make sure that only the lines beginning with a “#” are in that file.
Save it. You’re good to go!
P.S. If you open the “hosts” file from the etc folder itself, once you modify and save it, you might not be able to save the file in that folder and saving it somewhere else changes the format of it since you don’t have the administrative rights to do so.
For those who face this problem, When you open the “etc” folder, you have to copy the hosts file to your desktop, Modify the file as stated above, and THEN paste it back to the “etc” folder and overwrite the existing file.
You might wanna make a backup of the hosts file as well, just for safety sake!

During gameplay Ezio will randomly stop walking or running while the key is still held down. It may be the keyboard, but it doesn’t seem to affect any other games.

I stoped playing after I firs time exited the animus and when I tried to run AC2 next time screen was black for a couple of seconds and it could not start the game.

I was about to play this, scince I got the steam version. (less problems for most people) and assassins creed the original worked FANTASTIC (iffy-game though) so I really wanted to do this – when I found the issue ‘game launcher stopped working’ I went to the game launchers file, re-made it. got a new one. and that didn’t work. I came here… nothing else. -_- HELP!

for the internet problem, i had the same problem at first, “anInternet connection is required to play this game….” ->and i had internet…but my Firewall did not allow the launcher application to connenct. So people have this problem and dont use Proxy, first check your Firewall and change the settings for launcher application.
