Aliens vs Predator PC ( AVP PC ) Crashes, Freezing, load issues, Stuttering, Black Screen, “Game is currently unavailable,” No Games Found, Fix, Fixes
Written by badguy001
Aliens vs Predator makes its return to the gaming scene after several years out of the limelight. But it seems that Aliens vs Predator probably should have spent a wee bit more time in development as game-breaking crashes, glitches, and errors are causing more trouble than any alien or predator could ever do. So if you’re having problems getting this game to run then check out the fix guide right after the jump.
IMPORTANT:
- Update your nVidia and ATI video / Graphics cards to their latest drivers.
- If you have encountered problems or solutions not listed in this guide, feel free to post it in the comment section below. No registration required
- Be sure that your PC meets Aliens vs Predator ( AVP ) PC system requirements:
Minimum Requirements
- Windows 7/ XP/Vista
- 1 GB System RAM (XP)/ 2 GB System RAM (Vista)
- 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4/Athlon 64 3000+ or equivalent processor
- DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 128 MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better, ATI X1600 or better)
Recommended Requirements
- Windows 7/ XP/Vista
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 or equivalent processor

- DirectX 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI HD2900 PRO or better)
Problem #1: Aliens vs Predator PC ( AVP PC ) keeps stuttetering or pausing at random or at certain points
Possible Solution #1:
Play in offline mode.
Possible Solution #2: (By lee63 from the Steam forums)
Try running the game in windowed mode…the priority it at normal then, its at low when you alt tab out of the game.
Possible Solution #3: (found by Mkilbride2588 from Gamefaqs)
the stuttering issue that can be fixed on a Nvidia system by setting the pre render frames to 0 in the Nvidia control panel.
Having Force Alternate Frame Rendering set to 1, with the Maximum pre-rendered frames on 0 has provided the best balance between FPS and stutter/freezing so far. I get fairly solid frames (still drops a bit when loading the next area, or with water effects) and the stuttering/freezing has been significantly reduced, but still exists.
Problem #2: Aliens vs Predator PC ( AVP PC ) crashes at the loading screen / crashes while loading
Possible Solution #1:
Switch to DirectX 9 mode.
Possible Solution #2:
For Ati graphics card users, download the Ati Catalyst 9.12 Driver.
Problem #3: Aliens vs Predator PC ( AVP PC ) screen goes to black screen while loading with ATI HD 4000 Series
Possible Solution #1: (By Aztek87 from the Steam forums)
I had the same problem with my Radeon HD4870 as soon as i installed the new catalyst 10.2 when i went back to the 9.12s “hotfix” the problem when away and i could play in directx 11/10 mode just fine, just uninstall the 10.2s and install the 9.12s on the link below.
Link for the 9.12s for Vista/7 32&64bit.
http://downloads.guru3d.com/ATI-Cata…load-2450.html
Problem #4: Can’t find any online multiplayer games in Aliens vs Preadator PC ( AVP PC ) / no games found
Possible Solution #1: (By Ge15t from the Sega forums)
Open steam -> Click on file up the top -> Click Settings -> Click the downloads tab -> Choose a different download region (USA usually)
Problem #5: Can’t play Aliens vs Predator PC ( AVP PC ) because ” game is currently unavailable ”
Possible Solution #1: (By Wolfrip_Sixshot from the Steam forums)
This fix works for the Full game and demo.
Go into your steam games, right click on avp->properties->local files tab->verify integrity of game cache.
It will check the files and update them if something is wrong/currupted.
Note: If end up having verify integrity every time you quit the game to get to work then you have a currupted file that needs deleting. You have a choice between verify integrity before each launch or deleting local file content and redownloading AVP. (i know its a pain)
Note 2: This problem might have been caused by users downloading/installing the game then launching it stright away without doing a reboot of their computer thus causing files to become currupted
If that does not work try this fix
Go into your Steam folder/steamapps/common/AvP and then /redist/VC and install.
AVP’s version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 fixes it!
“DO NOT get it from microsofts site as it does not use the exact same config.”
Notes
1. You may need to uninstall any other versions of Microsoft Visual C++ on your computer then reboot it before installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2005.
2. It may not install correctly if you have a firewall/antivirus enabled. Disable them.
3. “Sometimes” it won’t install correctly if you have AVG anti-virus installed on your computer. You need to uninstall it.

Ran into the reported problems 2/3 using a ati 4870. Ati driver 9.12 seems to fix it. After downgrading from 10.1/10.2 (tried 10.2 first) to 9.12 I had no black screen after the intro sequence any more.
Starting in dx9 mode worked as well for me.
Thanks for the reported solutions.

Hi,
I’va got an annoying problem within the marine-campaign: On serveral points in the game, for example in the tutorial after you walked down the first stairs (after the exploded gas bottle), the display freezes. Then I still can hear the sound in the background for some seconds before the game crashs finally. But when I set the video-settings in “normal” (I normally play on “high” settings), this problem does not exist. I have a Geforce 8800XT (win vista 32bit), and I think it should works on “high” settings – the rest of the game works fluent. Any idea?
THX a lot for help!

The new steam update should fix most people. Steam would start the game in DX11 even if you click on start in DX9 mode before…
Desktop and start menu shortcuts still have this problem. You have to go into steam / games right click AVP start in DX9 and it will now work for most.

Hi,
I got AvP and i’m having a very annoying and frustrating problem. I bought the DVD case (not downloaded through steam), everything installed fine, updated drivers (i’m using the GTX 260), updated directx (i’m still on xp so I can only run the directx 9 version)
When I install everything, i click on the exe, everything freezes for a few seconds (the ‘launching time’), and than nothing happens, I remain staring at the desktop and nothing happens no matter how many times a click on the exe to run the game. I’ve e-mail to customer services but no response yet.
I noticed something strange, whenever I click on the exe and the game fails to lauch a DMP file and a Steamstart file gets created in the game folder.
I’ve attached the files and e-mailed them but again no response (except for the ackownledged e-mail response which is automated)/
I would greatly appreciate any help to run this game !! thanks!.
btw here are my specs:
Pentium Core 2 Quad )Q9300 @ 2.50 Ghz
3 GB of Ram
Asus Xonar Sound card
Nvidia GTX 260
Windows XP SP2

Often games not running could be related to registry problems. Yes, it is a good idea to cleanup your registry errors. A critical error in your Windows Registry can cause your PC Freeze up and Crash. Most people are today aware that Registry is the brain of a Windows PC without which it cannot function. Windows and all your software and hardware keep referring to it all day long. The best option to tune up your Windows PC would be to find a registry cleaner that can fix registry problems and fix pc freeze & crash. There are many good registry cleaners available online which do much more than just cleanup your registry but even increase your pc performance restoring your computers original speed. Registry Repair Tools are so simple to use that even a small child can fix windows registry with a few mouse clicks.

I found what the problem is for the people who have gotten a crash at the start with the steamstart and .dmp files showing up in the main folder, but I don’t know how to fix it. Using the debugging tools for windows, it said the symbol file could not be found!
February 27th, 2010 at 10:18 pm
For those who have had that stupid crash right after you start it and get that dump file and steamstart file. It is due to an error. Using the windows debug tool, I have discovered it’s because of a symbol error. It says
Error:Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntdll.dll
Don’t know what it means but maybe someone can figure it out!
February 28th, 2010 at 3:07 am
Tried rolling back to 9.12. Tried updating drivers (dx etc…) tried running in window mode.

I just bought AvP3 yesterday very excited went to my computer and started installation i have a velocity micro, windows 7, Intel Core Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz, 4GB RAM, 64 bit operating system, my computer rating is 6.0 with the game only being 5.0 so i can run this easily.
when its finished and done i click on my short i get the 20th century fox Sega and rebellion logo add things, what ever then i get to the menu and its freezes up, only way out is to Ctrl alt Delete and task manage out, Every time in DX11 and DX9.
ive reinstalled it 4 times now and rebooted 5, i have upgraded DX and i dont know what else to do, the furthest ive gotten to without it freezing or crashing on me on all the classes is right after the little short clip of the man getting blinded by the light on the ancient structure, then it starts loading and give you little tips about the game then it freezes, its pissing me off any ideas to why it might be doing this?
March 5th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
I am having the black screen after the rebellion logo too… I have the game, installed and reinstalled, checked directx and everything but nothing works. I found a “fix” on internet that replaces the intro stuff but doesn’t work, it just removes to intro… I installed the game on my friend’s computer, he has no problems at all. I guess it’s really coming from the computer… I see that a lot of people have that problem and nobody can really fix it.
March 6th, 2010 at 9:31 am
is anyone having a problem installing the game at all? I put the first disc in and it will not read it nor start auto installing. cant even manually choose the drive and run it either….
March 8th, 2010 at 3:22 am
OK guys, I have a really old PC (P4 3.0 GHz, 2MB RAM, 9600GT, WinXP SP3) but I was able to run the game with high video settings. I was having the CTD (crash to desktop) right after the campaign intro, with no error being shown at all. I tried everything listed as a possible solution:
-Installed the last DirectX 9.0c end-user runtime.
-Upgraded the video drivers.
-Set the Hardware Acceleration to “Basic”, under Performance, in Advanced Audio Properties.
-Even tried to set the “Affinity” to CPU0 only, in the task manager, for the running AvP.exe process.
-Installed the Visual C++ 2008 SP1 redistributable package (previously, I did the same for the 2005 SP1 version).
Tried the game after each step, with the same results, until I noticed that I was able to start the predator campaign, with a memory-related crash immediately after the first checkpoint.
So I checked my pagefile size and noticed it had a custom size. Set it to “System managed size”, and that worked. :/
I don’t think it was the combination of system modifications, but obviously, a bigger pagefile size did the trick. Just took the time to write this because someone could find it useful.

FIXING CRASHES
Thankfully, it s not hard to bypass these annoyances. In this article we list some fixes that will hopefully solve your problems for good and let you enjoy the game without bugs and glitches.
Change the audio sampling rate
If your system s audio sampling rate is set to anything above 48hz, it ll likely cause AVP 3 to go haywire. Most users who experienced crashing, black screens at launch, audio problems and other issues seem to have solved them by reducing the audio sampling rate to a lower value one that the game can handle. Follow the steps below to change the audio sampling rate.
For Windows 7 / Windows Vista
1. Go to your sound card s control panel.
2. Locate the option that allows you change the default audio format for the card.
3. Set the default format to 24-bits, 48000Hz or less (if it doesn’t work with 48000Hz, try 24 bits, 44100Hz)
For Windows XP
If you are using Windows XP follow the instructions below to change audio settings:
1. Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
3. Click the Volume tab.
4. Under Speaker settings, click the Advanced button.
5. Click the Performance tab.
6. Reduce the Hardware acceleration to Basic, the 2nd notch from the left.
7. Click Apply and then OK 2 times. Run the game now. Don’t forget to turn the acceleration back up to restore the high-end features for your sound card when using other applications.
(XP fix quoted from a forum thread for Prototype on Activision forums applies to AVP 3 as well):
Note that the above is a very popular fix among gamers and was used heavily with games such as Call of Duty 5 and Prototype.

I also have the same problem..at certain part in the campaign mode, suddenly the game stop working
can anyone help me
My laptop using NVIDIA GeForce G105M

If you have the “application configuration incorrect” error after a successful install, you need
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update kb973923
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766A6AF7-EC73-40FF-B072-9112BAB119C2&displaylang=en
Worked for me!
March 18th, 2010 at 3:42 pm
I have loaded the game but when I try to connect the the internet I get an error; “AvP.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”. And when I send the error to Microsoft it tells me that “Kaspersky antivirus has stopped working”, but I don’t have Kaspersky antivirus. Is this something that the game requires or is there something wrong with my computer? Or, is there something else someone knows that might be causing this problem? Thanks
March 27th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

I have installed and uninstalled the game countless time. Also, I do not have a 3.4ghz pentium processor but i do have a 2.7ghz one – however, the HD graphics crad i have should make up for this, shouldn’t it?
Help Please!

HI All, I’m disinclined to do ANY fiddling to get theis piece of crap working, my system is brand new, far exceeds the recommended requirements for this game and it crashes EVERY time – I’m just going to take it back to game and ask for my money back,. I expect it to work, the crap needs to be taken out of this game BEFORE it gets to the street, not ‘oh it’s pretty buggy but what the hell lets sell it anyway – NOT HAPPY sega, you must do better!
April 7th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
yep I agree Mark, I’m above the minimum and I have frequent crashes too, when will companies realise that SELLING games that are not fit for consumers is against the law, I’m very certain in the uk that Trading Standards would have something to say about this.. get your act together sega for all of us gamers are getting incredibly peeved at you!
April 10th, 2010 at 9:34 pm
I can’t believe that these people have released this game. There definately needs to be standards to make companies liable for legal action. The games industry is now bigger than the movie industry so surely some of these companies can spend a bit of extra time to make sure the game is playable before they release this. I have had the same issues as you guys but for me its a black screen and I can hear audio. Basically I crash at the start of the game, after the 1st checkpoint, when I start walking to the new area, my screen goes black and I can hear the wayland corp. sounds of ‘building worlds krap’.
@ The cardenas
I tried your sound XP fix and it seemed to work and I got through the 1st checkpoint and then to the 3rd and then it crashed again. My crashes are what are happening to others: Black screen but I can hear sound. I have inbuilt sound but my system is fairly good at running the game on dx 9.0c. The problem with me setting the priority to ‘normal’ is the fact that I can’t seem alt-tab out to set the processor affinities to ‘normal’ as the computer just stalls if i alt tab out.
This really has pissed me off. I would NEVER download a game using this Steam service. Its a waste of money as far as I see it. I just buy my games using the DVD which ensures I always have a hard copy in case things fail but when a game like this comes along, I feel cheated of my hard earned money!
Anyway, does any1 know if AvP3 was made for dual core processors? My rig is: AMD 4400+ Dual Core, 3 gig RAM, ATI Radeon X1900XTX 512mb Vid CArd.

Everytime i try to install my alien vs predator game on my dell laptop, the is an error box that comes up saying: Steam.exe.(main exception): To run steam you need to be connected to the internet. But everytime i am already connected to the internet. I tried alomst everything. I checked to see if it was my firewall….that wasnt it. I checked to see if it was my wireless adapter. that wasnt it. But everytime i am already connected to the internet. I tried alomst everything. I checked to see if it was my firewall….that wasnt it. I checked to see if it was my wireless adapter. that wasnt it. Very useful – As the designer of the M42A Scope Rifle I was keem to see the M42C. I had two discs and there was a distinct wobble on the switrch back to disc 1. It seemed to have installed but I see odd flickering squares and lines with the sounds of what I guess is the loading screen. Two hours effort didn’t fix this but I now know that I have a
Dell XPS 430
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 GHz
3326 RAM
Direct X 11
ATI Radeon HD 4800
Generic PnP Monitor
I am guessing that te ATI driver update link is the one to use to fix the problem. Any thoughts welcome.
At the moment I am playing Call of Duty World at War which works straight out of the box, unlike AVP 3.

Those who are getting the dmp saying “Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntdll.dll” try running the AvP.exe instead of the launcher or DX11. It worked for me.
