Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) PC Crashes, Freezes, Installation errors, CTD, Slow Framerate, Fix and Fixes
Written by badguy001
Left 4 Dead 2 ( L4D2 ) is without a doubt a fantastic and worthy successor to the original Left 4 Dead. Although it has upped the standards of cooperative online play and zombie-killing fun, it’s unfortunate that it isn’t an error-free title. So if your copy of Left 4 Dead 2 keeps freezing, crashing, or doing all sorts of glitches that’s ruining your fun, then check out the fix guide right after the link and you might find the solution you need.
IMPORTANT:
- Update your nVidia and ATI video / Graphics cards to their latest drivers.
- If you have encountered problems or solutions not listed in this guide, feel free to post it in the comment section below. No registration required
- Be sure that your PC meets these system requirements:
Minimum:
- Supported OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
- Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
- Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
- Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better
- Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space
- Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Recommended:
- Supported OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
- Processor: Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz

Problem #1: Left 4 Dead 2 ( L4D2) can’t run / play after install
Possible Solution: (By JoeR from Valve)
If you are running Vista or Win7, L4D2 requires Steam Service.
L4D2 has components that require the installation rights Steam Service provides.
If you are seeing ‘Incomplete Installation’ with a number that is NOT 35, fixing the Steam Service may repair the problem. Error 35 is associated with network connectivity.
Ways to tell there may be a problem:
- Right Click ‘Computer’ in explorer and then ‘Manage’.
- Expand Services and Applications
- Select Services
- Look for ‘Steam Client Service’.
- If it is running when Steam is not, there is a problem.
- If it not running and Steam is, there is a problem. - If the file in <Program Files>\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe has a different time/size than <Steam Install>\bin\SteamService.exe, there is a problem.
(Note: For 64 bit OS, the Program Files will be the (x86) version.)
(Note: Steam can be installed wherever you choose, but the service will almost always be on C:\…)
To Fix (First Try)
- Exit Steam
- Open a ‘Command Prompt’ (cmd.exe if you are using ‘Run…’ from the start menu)
- Run: “c:\Program Files\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair
- Note: Change “c:\Program Files” to wherever you have steam installed. For a 64 bit OS the default would be: “c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe” /repair
- Start Steam
To Fix (If that didn’t work)
- Exit Steam
- Delete the file:
32 bit Windows: “c:\Program Files\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe”
64 bit Windows: “c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe” - Restart Steam
To Fix (at your own risk)
- Exit Steam
- Kill SteamService.exe from the task manager
- Copy the version from <Steam Install>\Bin into <Program Files>\Common Files\Steam
- Restart Steam
To Fix (Safer, or if the above doesn’t work)
- Exit Steam
- Open the Control Panel
- Open ‘Programs and Features’
- Right Click on ‘Steam’ and select ‘Repair’
- This operation can take awhile.
Problem #2: Left 4 Dead 2 ( L4D2) won’t install properly / get’s an error message, ” incomplete installation (35) “ while installing
Solution #1: (By RichKaethler from Valve)
If you get this error “Incomplete Installation (35)”, make sure your firewall allows outbound TCP connections to port 27019.
The server port for this system has been changed to 27031, which is used by other services and should improve the reliability of this connection, as it should already be open in any firewall that supports steam.
We do not expect this change to solve all of these problems, but should help for some.
There is a new Steam Client Beta, if you are still having the Incomplete Installation(35) problem, please try it.
If it does not solve the problem please PM me your account name, operating system and type of internet connection.
Problem #3: Left 4 Dead 2 ( L4D2) Crashes / Freezes / stutters / runs very slow / slow framerate during gameplay / while playing
Possible Solution #1: (By oct42 from the Steam forums)
Turn off multicore rendering
Possible Solution #2: (By The red ninja from the Steam forums)
I use mat_queue_mode 0 in console and it fixes everything
Possible Solution #3: (By tibetanpunk from the Steam forums)
OS Paged pool memory fix. Readme enclosed. Has been downloaded 2378 times so far and only good responses. Wins XP only.
Possible Solution #4: (By Mike Durand from Valve)
If you have an NVidia graphics card and are still experiencing hitches please try installing their beta driver version 195.39.
Problem #4: Left 4 Dead 2 ( L4D2) will quit / crash to desktop ( CTD ) during gameplay
Possible Solution #1: (By Freyar, Steam forum Moderator)
- Close Steam
- Go To ..\steam\steamapps
- Delete left 4 dead 2 client.ncf
- Delete left 4 dead 2 common.ncf
- Restart Steam
- Right-click L4D2 and Install
- Let it sort itself out.
Possible Solution #2: (By DigitalySane from the Steam forums)
1. RightClick on L4D2 and click on properties
2. Click on “Set Launch Options…”
3. Type the following “-lv” and hit ok
4. Play the game but be jarateed that you don’t have your gore anymore but hay it works.
Problem #5: Every time the map changes, performance for people with multicore ATI GPUs on 64-bit OS’s drop to unplayable levels
Possible solution #1: (By Hieno Kaveri from the Steam forums)
Alt-tab out of game, then back in

Try this for the crash to desktop issue…
1)Navigate to your windows folder (usually c:/windows/)
2)Inside there, goto the CSC folder
3)Try to open the folder and it should fail (if it doesn’t, you have a different problem). It’ll come up with ‘You don’t currently have permission to access this folder’ at which time you keep pressing continue until it says you’ve been denied.
4)Right-click the folder, go to properties.
5)Go to the security tab at which point it’ll say ‘To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object’s security properties’ at which point you click continue.
6)Click on admin in the owner tab which will swap the owner to the administrator then click OK.
7)You then click on OK once again which will bring up the security tab.
8)Tick ‘full control’, press OK twice to get out of the properties tabs.
9)Run the game.

I’m experiencing problem #4. I have utilized both solutions and -lv launch option works but I really hate to lose the great detail in the gore.
I notice the game only freezes when I cause the bloodspatter. If I follow my teammates, for instance, and watch them hack and slash things, the game works fine…
Does this indicate some other issue? one that can be fixed without the -lv?
November 18th, 2009 at 12:44 am
im having this problem, incomplete installation (2)..
i tried many solutions but its still not working..
anyone else have this problem? can someone help?
November 18th, 2009 at 12:52 am
Didn’t fix my problems, my game still crashes like 5 – 10 mins into play, how terrible, mat_queue_mode doesnt even exist! -lv is not an option…
November 18th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
after playing the game for around 5 minutes, it always freezes, everything turns pink, and im able to see the polygons of all the meshes. everything freezes up and i have to completely reset my computer in order to gain back control. is this a graphics card problem? (all drivers are up to date)
November 20th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
This is crazy, started playing the game on Tuesday – all fine up until today – now will crash to desktop every 5 mins. Is this one of Valve’s “if it aint broke, fix it til it is” issues?
November 21st, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Problem #4:
Solution #1 – no dice, didn’t help at all
Solution #2 – Helps a bit, could play for a bit longer, but it kinda just delays the inevitable so still getting CTD.
Plus it looks rubbish without the gore
November 22nd, 2009 at 2:01 am
same as endy “instalation problem #2″ trying to find a way..to fix it :/
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:10 am
Just set the your windows date to 2009 nov 29 to avoid CTD
November 24th, 2009 at 12:49 am
i have the same problem as dan
anywhere at random during play it will start to studder and crash, and after about 10 seconds all i can see is visual artifacts making the game entirely unplayable.
and only a comp restart will fix it till it happens again
November 24th, 2009 at 4:33 am
1) Try changing your date to 29 november 2009 (Not 28 , neither must it be 30)
2) Try setting your resolution to “Windowed Mode(No borders)”
3)Turn off v-sync and try low settings) (Keep multicore-rendering at “On” and paging file at “High”)
November 24th, 2009 at 11:25 am

November 25th, 2009 at 10:13 am
I installed the drivers mentioned in the text and I changed the date to one day earlier, and game didn’t crash , I played it about an hour and it didn’t crash!!
This is awesome!!
Thanks!
November 25th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
I found out that alot of the suggested fixes wouldnt work for the crash to desktop problems
but turning off the multicore processing and turning off the subtitles made me able to play without crashes so far
oh and change the target at the properties of the left4dead2 icon add ” -lv” (note the space before – )

Crash to Desktop fix for Radeon 4800 family.
I had a Crash to Desktop after two minute of game play with the latest catalyst drivers 9.11. . After installing the beta drivers (version 9.12) I’ve been abe to play the game for hours straight. The drivers will not be available from ATI until mid December, but they have been leaked and can be found the guru3d.com forums.
If the forum allows links it can be found here:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=309107
Otherwise, go look in the ATI section of the guru3d driver forums.

January 2nd, 2010 at 8:11 am
After about 5 minutes of gameplay (10 if I’m lucky), the game crashes/freezes on me, and I often have to either Ctrl, Alt + Del out of the game or I have to restart my laptop. All my drivers are fully up to date and I’m on an Acer Aspire 8930G laptop with a nVIDIA Geforce 9600 GT graphics driver with 512 MB. Is it something to do with the laptop? Please help!
January 4th, 2010 at 2:34 am
I got a problem too.. i downloaded l4d2 from piratebay.. no installer just a few blablabla.. but when i start the launcher this message appears->> engine error steam not running. you must run steam to play the game”
i dont know what to do. need a big help here.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:52 am
I have the exact same problem many users listed here.
I’m running Vista 64x on a Laptop with well above the minimum requirements for L4D2, and roughly 3-10 minutes into the gameplay (Which is smooth as butter and beautiful) the game just crashes to the desktop, sometimes with a “L4D2.exe is not responding” error (Instantly), and sometimes just CTD with no error message whatsoever.
I’ve tried the CSC fix with no result. I’ve tried the -lv fix with no result. I’ve tried the November 29 fix with no result. I’ve followed the delete common files in the steamapps folder with no result. I’ve reinstalled L4D2 three times in the past 2 days, and i’ve tried adjusting the game settings to more or less every possible combination of enabled and disabled video features, for no result.
I’ve rolled back my video drivers, and updated to unreleased beta drivers. All of them result in the exact same 3-10 minute insta-crashing.
Where to go, what to do now, oh internet gurus of all things mystically obscure?
January 8th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
I was using ESET NOD32 and I keep getting CTD no matter what I did, but after I read this and I then removed Nod32 and install Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security_es…aspx?mkt=en-us, all the CTD gone, and I can play perfect game.

Important:
We encourage protecting your PC from viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software. However, it is not necessary to run anti-virus and other security applications while you are engaged in playing a game on Steam.
Anti-virus applications often interfere with Steam and can cause a range of problems from connection issues to games not launching correctly. Please set your anti-virus to Game Mode or disable it before launching Steam if you are experiencing issues with your Steam games.
The Steam application or Steam game has been mistakenly identified as a virus or “trojan” by certain software as a result of the development of potentially-malicious programs which use the same filenames as valid Steam files (this is a very common practice amongst malicious software writers – many viruses already masquerade as valid operating system files).
Note:
Steam games which have been mistakenly picked up by programs such as NOD32, ESET, Avira, and others include:
Bully
Ducati World Championship
Fallout 3
Iron Warriors
Left 4 Dead
Master Levels of Doom
Zeno Clash
We will continue to update this list as we become aware of any issues.
We are working with the antivirus and firewall software vendors to ensure fewer false positives involving Steam appear in the future.
In the meantime, please review the symptoms below to determine whether or not this issue is impacting your system:
ESET NOD32
NOD32 incorrectly identifies some third party game files as malicious and will quarantine the files during the download process. This often results in the message “This game is currently unavailable” when trying to launch the game.
Add your game folder to NOD32 exclusions. The default folder location for third party games is C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common. Follow the link for further instructions: How do I exclude certain files or folders from real-time scanning?
Once your folder has been added, you need to verify your GCF cache files in order for the files to re-download. Please see the Verifying GCF Cache Files article for instructions.
Norton Firewall
When using the “Friends” feature, some Norton Firewall users have reported that their firewall software reports that Steam may be malicious software attempting to access their system. This is a false positive.
Occasionally the Friends server sends your computer a message asking if you’re still online – if you closed Steam (especially if you killed it from the task manager), this message can be intercepted by the Norton firewall.
Since Friends sometimes uses the same port number as a known trojan horse virus, the firewall incorrectly identifies the message as being malicious – despite the fact that the traffic does not mimic a trojan in any other respect.
Kaspersky AV or Internet Security
Kaspersky AV may prevent the in-game overlay from functioning in some or all games. This may occur silently, or Kaspersky may warn you that Steam is acting as an Invader application trying to load itself in another process.
Workaround:
Remove your Anti-Virus Program and use Free Anti-Virus from Microsoft (Microsoft Security Essentials)
http://www.microsoft.com/security_es…aspx?mkt=en-us
January 10th, 2010 at 4:02 am
when you see the loading screen or the intro and then crash then you have a very simple problem. you have to run as an administrator. second, this solves that problem but what I can’t wrap my head around of is the second following problem, which complicates everything, and that is the second you start walking around, like in the first map (where you go down the stairs and open the door) the game goes CTD!!!
problem 1# fix: run as an administrator
(complication) problem 4# is still in tact after all the instructions.
January 10th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Does anyone know when Valve will release a patch for the random crash with no error????
January 14th, 2010 at 4:01 am
The solution to all your problems is to buy the original game and patch it accordingly. If the game is awesome, buy it. This one’s definitely in that category.
January 15th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
Too bad I have a legit copy of the game, and it’s ctd’ing randomly all the time.
Hardware
ati 4870
amd phenom II 550
4gb ram
software
latest mobo drivers
at 9.12 drivers
dx9c
windows xp pro fresh install
fresh install of steam + l4d2
CTD types
————-
Loading screen between saferooms ~ 50%
Loading screen between saferooms BSOD ~ 5%
1 minute after loading screen after a saferoom ~ 25%
random crashes after 25-30 minutes of game play ~ 20%
I’ve tried with really no noticeable drop in CTD frequency
——————————————————————————–
1. Fresh l4d2 files (i.e. steam verifies, and reinstalls of OS/steam/l4d2)
2. Rolling back ATI drivers many generations w/ driversweeper
3. Running game in window
4. Disabling vsync/multicore rendering
There doesn’t seem to be any legit fix to this right now. Maybe valve will figure something out … in 6 months.

>>>>> That is the ONLY fix that solved my problem (#1: My SteamService.exe didn’t start too)<<<<>>>> Game freezes after the 2 intros at the loading screen. You can’t play. (Steam quits in the background.) <<<<<
I had this problem under Win 7 64-bit. Altough the SteamService.exe don’t start after this fix, everything works great now without it.
SOLUTION:
- Start Steam.
- Go to the Steam “Properties”.
- Under “Account” press the “Change”-button for “Steam Client BETA”.
- Agree with testing the Steam Client BETA.
- Restart Steam – It will update itself now.
Hope it helps you too, guys! Plz post my comment under the headline as a fix to solve problem #1 !!!

I can’t run any steam games. Always get engine error: “Steam is not running. You must start Steam in order to play this game.”
I have tried everything there is to fix this, even reinstalled windows, steam and most steam games clean.
Everything worked just fine 18.1.2009 and next day this error thing started.
Used to use windows xp pro sp3 when the problems started, then reinstalled windows and tried launch games with sp2. No fix, then installed vista32 home, no fix, winsta ultimate 32 and 64, no fix. Now trying to fix this mess with windows 7 32bit ultimate… still not working…..
I have spend alot of money to these steam games, not going to buy any more untill steams supports answers and fixes this.

UPDATE – Completely fixed
=================================================
I fixed my particular crashing to desktop / blue screens. Obviously because of what I changed I don’t think this is applicable to all users. To make matters worse, I changed three things, and I’m not sure which one was the culprit (I’ve honestly been to lazy to find out).
So I read the windows minidump file on one of my blue screen crashes. It said there was a driver failure on sysaudio.sys. Because it said audio in the name, I reinstalled my audio drivers… I also disabled ‘Internal HD Codec’ and left it to ‘External Codec’ in my BIOS. Probably neither of these are the culprit. Maybe.
What I think it was, is I also backed my ram down to 1333 mhz from it’s rated 1600 mhz. My motherboard says it supports it, and my ram is ocz 1600mhz ram. I’m guessing there is some hardware instability here with the “supported” 1600mhz OC ram.
So if you’re using OC ram, go ahead and try a lower frequency.

I just encountered stuttering gameplay and lockups of the game L4D2 after turning on the 3GB switch in my boot.ini file
If you turn on this switch it appears to cause problems with the game (disabling it confirmed this and fixed the issue.)
Hope this helps someone.

You all make a wonderful argument against leaving a comment, but it is so funny because everyone has a reason for not leaving a comment,

I have recently been having trouble with L4D2. When I play “the barns” on the Dark Carnival campaign it always crahses to my desktop. I am currently trying this:
Going to …/Steam/SteamApps[USERNAME] and copying the L4D2 files and pasteing them to your desktop. Then you delete all L4D2 files on your PC. After that you go to the my games section of Steam and right clicking on L4D2 then clicking properties. Then click Local game files and clicking verify integrity of game cache… and then letting it do its scan. dont do the scan when your running a virus scan or doing somthing with your hard drive. when it is done scanning it will say it needs to downlaod a shit load of files or somthing, close the box and it will start downloading those files. It will take a while like 6-8 hours depending on your PC. I am not 100% sure this method works because I am waiting for the files to download but everything else I have tried didn’t work so im trying this. I am doing this method because I assume that it crashes at that specific spot because I am missing a file needed to play it. so when you delete the L4D2 files and run the game cache thing it will need to install every single file for L4D2 including the file I am missing so when it is done downloading I should have all the neccessary files to play all levels without ripping my hair out. Hope this method works.

I’m having the CTD problem aswell with an legit copy i bought online on Steam. i can start the game just fine and get into the main menu, but when i join an game, as soon as its done connecting and loading it, the game will exit to my desktop without any error messages or anything.. i tried so many things, but the whole CSC folder fix doesnt work for me, because it’s not in there, even when i tried the fixes for that with the folder options thing. whats so odd is is that i played l4d2 like 2 months back and it worked perfectly. i pre ordered the game on steam and i played it since the launch, and until like this week, it always worked perfectly. i already updated my drivers but wouldnt work. i have Windows XP with an nvidia geforce 7300 GTX.. i tried reinstalling the game, validating the files, tried using some so called patch off the internet i found at an youtube video, but when i used it it didnt find any games or servers at all.. i will check this comment board back, and will post fixes that could work when i would find it.. but man, its just stupid that Valve is not reachable for this at all, and that they didnt fix this.. did i pay money for this?
good luck everyone fixing your copy

When i start up my l4d2, it shows a flash of the loading screen and then it crashes and says “Could Not Load Library Content” And i uninstalled l4d2 then reinstalled it but that didnt solved the problem, And THEN i tried defragmenting the files and viewed the integrity of the game cache but that faied too, now im forced to quit l4d2

wtf Steam? I’m a great contributor to your games and software but seriously wtf is this and the constant CTD I keep getting. I played the Demo when it was available but this just crashes after some minutes, heck even at loading times it fails! I’m trying some of the tips now…this is unbelievable man.

I’ve had the Dolphin for four pool seasons after an Aquabot that came with my house stopped working the same season I moved in. The Dolphin is constructed and works higher than the Aquabot. I have an irregular formed pool. The Dolphin has some desire for the deeper end, nevertheless it does cover your complete pool space in a single cycle.

I found a solution to running l4d2 on steam and the ‘server could not determine users steam ID’ problem. There was nothing wrong with my steam, the game conflicted with my spyware doctor, even set to game mode. If you have problems and are running spyware doctor, I recommend trying to shut it off and try excuting the game via steam again. Good luck, I hope it works for you!
