But not even excellence is enough to keep this hotly-anticipated title from being error free. So if you’re stuck on the desktop screen because of a frustrating crash, then check out the fix guide right after the jump and you might find the solution you need to get you back into the war.
IMPORTANT:
- Update your nVidia and ATI video / Graphics cards to their latest drivers.
- If you have encountered problems or solutions not listed in this guide, feel free to post it in the comment section below. No registration required
- Be sure that your PC meets these system requirements:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (Windows 95/98/ME/2000 are unsupported)
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor or better supported
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT or better or ATI Radeon 1600XT or better
DirectX: Microsoft DirectX(R) 9.0c
Hard Drive: 12GB of free hard drive space
Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Internet: Broadband connection required for Multiplayer Connectivity. Internet Connection required for activation
Problem #1: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 disc is not recognized in the drive
Solution #1: (By Activision Support)
All background applications should be shut down prior to running the game.
1) Go to the Start bar and select Run. (If you are on Vista or Windows 7, hit the Windows key and the R key at the same time)
2) In the Run window, type in msconfig and hit enter.
3) Once the utility comes up, go to the Startup tab and hit the Disable All button.
4) Next go to the Services tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” checkbox and then hit the Disable All button.
5) Hit the OK button and close the utility, and restart your computer when prompted to.
Please note that this method will shut down all background applications including your virus scanning software. If later on you decide you want to re-enable programs that were closed down, you can undo these changes by simply un-checking the Hide all Microsoft Services box and hitting Enable All on both the mentioned tabs.
The Windows OS allows you to have lots of different programs running at the same time. Sometimes these programs do not play happily together and create problems. Many modern games are very demanding on your computer. Some game problems can be solved by making sure that the game is the only program on the field. Limiting the number of other applications and programs running can help your system and program performance across the board, not with just games. Virus scanning and other security programs often use a large amount of memory and access the files on your harddrive frequently. This frequent harddrive access can slow your computer down if these programs are running in the background while the game is running. You should shut down as many programs as possible to lower the amount of memory being used before you launch the game. For Windows XP your system should only be using about 100 to 120 MB of memory before launching the game. For Windows Vista or Windows 7 that number should be around 700 to 1000 MB. You can check the amount of memory being used by clicking on the Performance tab in the Task Manager.
Once you complete the steps above then your system is ready to run the game. These steps can clear up a lot of problems you may be experiencing. Your performance may also increase because you have more memory free and more resources are available to the game. Not only can this make games run more smoothly, but applications can benefit from this, as well.
If you have multiple drives capable of reading the disc, then try installing from your other drive(s).
Check with your drive manufacturer for the latest firmware updates for your drive.
It is also extremely important to ensure you have the latest drivers and firmware for your motherboard components as well. Please contact your hardware manufacturer for instructions on how to acquire and apply the latest updates.
Problem #2: Can’t play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 online / can’t connect to any multiplayer games
Solution #1: (By Activision Support)
Be sure that your computer is not behind a software or hardware firewall of any kind. This includes firewalls built into routers or other equipment, as well as programs like Zone Alarm, Black Ice, and the integrated firewall in Windows XP. Activision does not support the use of our games from behind a firewall. If it is not possible to disable the firewall you will need to open the ports for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Call of Duty: MW2 transmits and receives network traffic on ports UDP: 1500, 3005, 3101, 28960 and TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port). Additionally the Steam client transmits and receives network traffic on ports UDP: 27000-27015, 27015-27030 and TCP: 27014-27050 The exact details on opening a port is specific to your firewall. For more information check with the firewall documentation or manufacturer.
Another common cause of problems is a poorly configured router or connection sharing solution. If you are using a router, ICS, NAT or a software gateway you may have problems playing on the internet. This is because the router may not be forwarding the correct information back to your machine. It may be possible to get around this problem using port forwarding or DMZ. You can find more information on configuring shared connections for multiplayer gaming at www.practicallynetworked.com. Please be aware that like a firewall we cannot actively support using shared connections to play online.
The most common cause of problems though is usually the simplest – an overburdened network stack. By default many computers have protocols the average person doesn’t use; things like VPN or NDISWAN. You may want to contact your ISP to find out exactly which protocols you can safely remove. Often times network game problems are resolved by something as simple as removing unused adapters and protocols.
The problem may also be related to the status of your ISP or that of the server. Due to the dynamic nature of the internet and the variable levels of traffic, it is impossible to completely eliminate this error. If you are having persistent problems you may wish to try a different server, or just wait and play a little while later.
If you have an AMD X2 processor on Windows XP please go to http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html and download and install the AMD Dual-Core optimizer and the processor driver.
Problem #3: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 encounters zone file error at launch or during gameplay
Solution #1: (By Activision Support)
Zone file errors are most likley due to a bad install or corrupt game files.
- You can verify the integrity of the game files in the Steam client. In the Steam client right-click on the game and select properties. Click on the local files tab and click the “Verify integrity of game cache” button. You will need to do this for the single player and multiplayer game executables.
- If that does not work you can try to delete the game content and re-download it from Steam. In the Steam client right-click on the game and select “Delete Local Content”. Once you have deleted the content you will need to re-download the content through the Steam client. You will need to do this for the single player and multiplayer game executables.
- If that does not help then you may have a bad disc. Try replacing the game at the store you bought it at. Remember that if you replace the disc you will need to completely uninstall and re-install the game.
If the game still does not work after uninstalling and replacing the disc then you may have a bad piece of hardware like a bad harddrive or stick of RAM. In this case you will have to contact your computer manufacturer to find out how to test and replace any hardware that may be failing.

- ***NOTE: The following is unsupported by Activision.***We have found the following to help the game install.
- Download Nero DriveSpeed from here. This freeware utility from Nero will allow you to slow your drive speed down, in increments, all the way to 2X. Try setting it to 8X. Some users may have to choose other settings to get optimal results. Your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM must be ATAPI/IDE. SCSI is not supported. If you receive an ASPI related error message when running Nero DriveSpeed, you may have to update your ASPI layer.
Instructions to check and update your ASPI layer - Set your CD-ROM drive or IDE channels for the CD-ROM to run in PIO mode 1 or a lower setting then it currently is at through BIOS. The exact steps for doing this may differ from motherboard to motherboard. You will need to check with your hardware or system manufacturer for more information on this topic.
- Zone Alarm has also been known cause some issues with the installer. If you currently have Zone Alarm installed it is recommended that you uninstall the program, install the game and then you can re-install Zone Alarm on your system.
- Windows Defender and Microsoft Office 2007 have been known to cause errors with the installer. These include errors referencing “msvcr80.dll” and “mpShHook.dll.” If you currently have either program installed, it is recommended that you uninstall the program, install the game and then you can re-install Windows Defender and/or Microsoft Office 2007 on your system. If you do not want to uninstall these programs you can try installing or re-installing Microsoft .Net 2.0. You can get it here. Installing .Net 2.0 has been known to fix this issue without having to uninstall Microsoft Office or Defender.
- If the game previously worked then it’s more than likely that you have a damaged CD/DVD. You can contact us via phone or through the web to arrange for a replacement.

Hi, I finally got modern warfare 2 to install after having to uninstall and reinstall steam. I started playing and everything works fine. Im running the game on a reasonable spec, and its smooth and has the occasional bit of lag when alot of stuff is happening on screen.
My problem is when you need to use the lazer targeting system or the night vision goggles the screen buggers up and its filled with just a solid colour until I stop using the items. Ive updated my drivers to the latest available ones, did a system and virus scan to make sure there is nothing wrong, its really odd. Everything else in the game works apart from that. Any Ideas on how to fix this little problem?
PC SPEC
2.0 dual core processor
Windows XP
4 GB RAM (Using only 3 because of XP)
NVIDIA 9400gt 512mb graphics card

My mw2 multiplayer and i think single player has done it, keeps minimizing itself to the desktop every so often and its really annoying because i cant find the problem.
It re-opens fine and no problems but having it do that in games is annoying.
Does anyone else have similar issues?

I have installed the game, however when I go to launch it it freezes… it used to say DirectX error. (There shouldn’t be a problem I have many new games that work fine) I am currently seeing if I need to update the drivers on my video card and direct x itself.
VISTA 64BIT
q6600
HD4870
DX10
I am getting really upset at $65

Steam went from 80% to 100%, Single player had graphical glitches, all walls black, purple everywhere. sometimes invisible guns, and can’t see anything through the optics.
Then co-op wouldn’t load the Sniper Fi map, crashes every time. Also causes a crash on ventrillo when people talk.
Updated Video, Sound, Direct X drivers,
Checked config.cfg for multiplayer and SP for matching key binds in vent.
Ran msconfig and stopped anything starting at boot.
Backed up and validated game files, didn’t help.
Last resort a completely fresh download and install!
Fingers crossed. Multiplayer is v. good when it does work though. I’ll reserve my judgement on having no dedicated servers for now!

I also have the minimizing problem. It isn’t any program I have running in the background doing it either…like every 30 minutes, it minimizes for no reason.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
I have a problem, this morning I bought a copy of the game, installed it and played the single player for a while. It worked fine, after that I quited the game, and used the computer to watch some videos. After that, I played some more mw2, then shut it down to internet for a bit.
The third time I tried to start the game it crashed, it happens when it shows the activision logo, at the start. It plays the sound that goes with it, but the animation the logo is supposed to appear with gets stuck and then nothing happens. The screen just freezes, all I can do is hit the windows button to see the taskbar and exit the game from there.
The second time you try to start it, hitting the windows button to get back doesn’t work anymore either, the mouse appears but thats it. Hitting the reset button is my only way out.
I tried everything of the above mentioned at problem 5, and reïnstalling the game aswell.
I’m not sure what my specs are, but I played the game on my computer today, and now it doesn’t work anymore. Normally I’m quite good at fixing this stuff myself, but this time I really think I need some help.
I use windows XP
November 12th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
ATTENTION TO EVERYONE HAVING THE STARTUP SCREEN FREEZE PROBLEM:
Just let the frozen logo sit for 2-4 minutes and magically it will start working.

TRH,
I’ve been having the same issue. It runs on like a 30 minute cycle for me; yes, I timed it to check for any correlations between the minimizing and other programs currently running – no luck so far.
Truly annoying, someone please help.

I can’t connect to friends party and the same goes for them… But I can join games online fine..
November 13th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
install starts OK, but then at around 30% the game install stops reading from the DVD disk, the estimated time keeps going up but the game install isn’t moving at all. what a joke! my DVD is FINE! tested and working all OK with ANY other DVD & game! waste of time and £40!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Im having the same minimizing issue, im there owning some noobs in singleplayer OR multiplayer and it just minimizes…… w—t—f
November 13th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Got a fix for the minimizing,
Go into windows firewall and and then to exceptions. Start the game up then minimize it by hitting the windows key. Now in the firewall exceptions window, check the .mp4 one. This worked for me thank god. no more minimizing.
Hope this helps.

I installed the game it has been working good for a couple of days, then today i tried to open multiplayer.exe and it says “modern warfare 2 did not quit properly the last time it ran”… etc then asks to run in safe mode or not. If i push yes to run in safe mode the res changes to 640×480 then it crashes and i have to do alt+ctrl+del to close mw2 which says not responding. If i try to run multiplayer.exe again it gives me the same error and i choose no to not run in safe mode, then it crashes again and has that little windows thing that moves on a completely black backround. So i have to alt+ctrl+del again and now i dont know what to do, as the game never previously crashed to cause this error to come up, I tried doing a complete install again and that didnt work either. Single player and spec ops seem to work fine though, this only happens with the multiplayer.exe
Please help me as I cant work this out man, this makes me hate computers cuz something is always wrong, i never know how people get reliability its no good u know?

I went into steam properties for the call of duty mw2 multiplayer .exe and did the verify integrity of game cache and it said the at the end “1 file failed to validate and will be reaquired” i dont know what that means and all i could do was close the window and it doesnt seem to fix the problem. Where does this error come from and does anyone know how to fix it?

Hi, I got mw2 yesterday and everything worked fine. I installed it by reinstalling steam because it wanted to download 11 gb of the game but I had the 2 dvds next to me -_-.
Now, the problem : Yesterday, no problem with the single player and multiplayer. Today, I launch singleplayer, I get blue screen of deaths, errors, crashing, freezing, causing me to restart the pc ( it restarts very fast it is a blue screen ) and i lose my progress and have to restart the mission. On multiplayer, I got a freeze and the only way was to restart the pc. What did happen, it is really strange, I run the game on max graphics with 1280 x 1024 resolution. This only happens in mw2 not other games.
Specs :
vista ultimate x64
amd phenom x4 9950 3ghz
xfx nvidia geforce 9800 gt ( non overclocked and overclocked still gives same problems )
4gb ram
650w psu

I bought the game for the PC.
I installed it and installed the Steam application, registered it and waited for Steam to do its thing.
I ran the game running a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit edition on a Q9450 and 4GB ram on a 300GB VelociRaptor running a LG Blu-ray Burner as the optical.
The game starts fine, the intro and epilogue all works fine. After the training part, it start with the blown up bridge, the canal, and a couple of enemy soldiers firing on the opposite side of the canal.
I start playing and proceed onto the Humvees with the minigun mount and after going through a cloud of dust of which a building had just been blown up. The game suddenly crashes and my screen turns pink with checker coloured sequences. I try to get back to the main O/S, but it does nothing and I have to do a hard reset every time.
I updated my drivers to the latest Nvidia version for 64 bit compatibility on a XFX GTX 260+.
I have tried numerous times and it just keeps crashing.
The only thing I suspect is perhaps I have not installed the drivers for my motherboard and other attached peripherals, however Windows 7 just installed its MS generic drivers… which sort of saved the trouble.
Will check this through.

dunno what happened there: Join games halfway through/at the end, PC crashes with sound loop and video freezes. Worked okay 13/11/09 until patch released 14/11/09. Seriously considering getting money back.

———————>I just bought i new graphics card after finding out that my previous card didn’t have the requirements for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. After I installed this graphics card and the game, I went straight to Multi-player. After a while through a map, the computer instantly freezes. 1. Virus-scan is already off 2. I went to the steam community and checked not to be bothered in game 3. I ran DXSETUP, didn’t work…. After all this work I thought that my new video card might be bad. I went back to Best Buy to trade the graphics card in for a better one. When I got home I installed this new graphics card, nVidia GT220 1024MB. I started playing, and the same thing happened after about 20 minutes of gameplay. Will somebody please help me!!! I’M DESPERATE!!!!!!

Try installing the game again and if that doesn’t work try deleting the file and do a right click on Call Of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 – Multiplayer and select (in steam –> games) Properties and click on the Local file tab and then just do a Verify integrity of game cache this is going to check the files for this games and if a map is missing it will download it automaticly .

I had experienced crashing and freezing in certain map’s loading screens. My PC totally freezed (or crashed to desktop), and had to restart/Alt+F4 to get it working. Those maps were estate and underpass, sometimes derail and scrapyard if i remember right. But maps, such as favela or afghan, i never experienced such problems, exepct random crashing during gameplay, but not map loading screen. I also had crashings in singleplayer, specially in last map where shepherd gets killed. I located the culprit, and it was ‘shadows’ option in graphics settings. By disabling ‘shadows’ my COD MW2 started working properly; I’ve had no crashings ever since. Hope this helps someone. And, heres my rig: ATI 4870 x2, catalyst 9.4, E8500 @ 4GHz, ASUS P5Q, Corsair Dominator, 2x 2GB 1066 MHz, 750W chieftec PSU. I tried catalyst 9.10 drivers too, but they didn’t make a difference.

I’ve had issues with MW2 freezing in game. I have a GTX260 with the lastest nvidia drivers. It has only happened a few times and usually after I’ve been playing the game for a while, but it is very annoying. It gave me an error once that the video drivers stopped responding or something, but usually I have to manually restart.

I have the same issue that TRH reported…. I played MW2 for about 6 days straight with absolutely no issues. Now, when playing multiplayer, every now and then the game just minimizes to the taskbar. It doesn’t necessarily crash, but it minimizes in the middle of games. Anyone know of a solution for this. I have made sure that there are no other applications running in background, other than antivirus. I also made sure there are no Steam windows open. Not sure what to do about this. Thanks.

#1 if you can help it DO NOT get the STEAM version of ANY game. It’s not worth the hassles. #2 update ALL respective drivers that would effect the said game. #3 exceed min. requirements for the game. Also where lag is concerned even on high end machines like quad processors it can lag a times. The one main reason for lag even on high end rigs is because of certain eye candy options that are turned on. So to reduce lag TURN OFF Anti Aliassing and Antiscopic Filtering because they both add more pixels on the screen for your card to render causing lag. Also TURN OFF Dynamic Shadows because it also adds a ton of extra graphics your card has to render and it’s just as bad as AA & AF for that.

MW2 Works fine when loading and in lobby. Once I start playing it will just freeze and will have to do a hard restart. One time I caught an error that showed that my video card driver just stopped working. I updated my drivers and it still does the same exact thing. Only freezes when in game. BTW playing it in windowed mode.

Bought the game and it came with DVD’s. Installed ,tried to play and it just freezed at startup. I found on some forum that the DVD’s are the cause of the problem, so I downloaded it again from steam and I haven’t got any problems. So if you installed from the dvd’s, download the game from steam and voila.. Posting this reply cos I didn’t find this info easily and tought it would be a nice gesture.

Windows 7 ult. 64 bit…high end rig….SP works fine, MP doesnt work at all….says I have “Strict” NAT setting even though I dont have a router….menu works fine and I can connect to ppl but as soon as I do it starts showing weird colour boxes flickering all over the place, cant move, hear sound fine, eventually crashes but I usually just alt-ctrl-dlt it since I know its not gonna work….looks like no one is posting solutions to the huge list of problems this game has…I bought this for MP only….$70 down the drain unless someone figures out all the bugs…

You could try getting riva tuner software and put your graphic cards fan to max speed and try setting lower graphics. It could be that it’s over heating. some nvidia cards have been getting this problem. anti-aliasing off at least. I have xfx 8800 gt and it has problems with heat.
November 24th, 2009 at 6:01 am
dear gamebrood crews!
hi I just wanna say thanks a lot b’cuz listed that fix for our common COD 6 problems! I have a problem too actually that are not listed so i’m just gonna tell y’all.
I had played the game till the end. Finished! I was having fun playing it for 2 days. Yea i played for hours.
But the problem is when it went on loading screen. There is a bar that is telling us the loading point correct?
During the loading bar want to finish loading of course, the loading screen goes fine, showing the briefing of the next level yes? But right after the loading far finished it point, the loading screen goes lag.
What I really mean was, it goes like straight lagging as in it was showing slow and there was like 0.5 sec of lagging then it played repeatedly and it was kinda boring and annoying. I mean I can just press the esc to go on but it’s kinda ruined the gameplay, as I was unable to completely understand the next level and the whole game.
I bet some of us still trying to find the answer but couldn’t.
So please help me yeah?
my system is
9800 gt nvidia
3 gb ram
xp

November 27th, 2009 at 3:25 am
wat bull ****, i bought this game ran the setup, it installed steam, i had the dam discs right there but it downloaded the game aswell, god knows why, and i installed it, played for 2-3 minutes and my computer shutsdown. WTF!, and my computers new as, Q9550 2.83Ghz, 8GB DDR3 2000 RAM and 1TB HDD GTX260EXTR GPU with a 1000W PSU, and a 23′ Monitor, man doesnt it piss you off when games have errors as bad as this!?!?!
November 27th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
I have this installed on a 1beyond dual quad core Xeon 1.6 with 3GB of RAM and a Matrox rt-x2 video card. It constantly crashes. When graphics get choppy and the game runs slow, expect a crash. Then, when you restart…even the game and machine, it takes you right back to the first mission like you have never played before. Hmmm. Thinking of trying it on the laptop with the dual core 2.1 & 4GB of ram. Would thing a high-end video editing machine could run a game, but I guess not. Looks like you might need a few grand in hardware upgrades every 2 years at this rate of you want to play.
November 28th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

so you made a game thats filled with errors, you cunt!

Game crashes at loading of new map, played it for a while, including the level im on currently, quit, and restarted today.
Game keeps poping to desktop as soon as it is done loading, it doesnt finish the vid, so its not a resorce allocation error or a graphics error.
The given solution, of disabeling all addins and switching to 1k7 resolution in windows doesnt fix this error, for Win XP or for Win7.
Problem seems to lie in a profile error, most probably steam related, tested a new windows account with same installation, gives a wright error (not enough diskspace) ofcourse with between 50-300 gigs free on all partitions thats not true, reinstalled game under original windows account, problem persists, reinstalled under a difrent account and it works, untill ofcourse the problem starts up again.
The problem is not related to OS, Installed addins or programs, drivers or otherwhise.
There is an error in the game that needs to be attended, good luck.
PS, not gonna pop in a full system info tree, surfice to say running the game on full is a breeze, that part at least is well done.

I installed MW2 in my pc and ran the game, it was working fine for 10 minutes, but after that suddenly it crashed, and the problem persists even after i have tried the solution provided by activision. It does not work, and is making me mad now. I was very excited about the game, but here its creating tons of problems.

When i try to start up my game i get message stating:
It appears that Modern Warfare 2 did not quit properly the last time it ran.
Do you want to run the game in safe mode?
This is recommended for most people.
It will change your system settings but not your controls.
If i click yes or no the message goes away then nothing happens. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
December 10th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
My game crashes/hangs after minutes of playing. I have to restart the system. I also tried reinstalling and the above ‘solution’. The game still crashes.

Ive already tried the “Problem #5: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 crashes / crashing at launch / crashes / freezes while playing” fix, unfortunately it was ineffective, the problem still remains.
Im running an Acer Aspire Desktop
Q9300 intel Quad Core,
8G ram
1.6T harddrive
nvidia GeForce 9800GT graphics drive
All Drivers are up to date, I hope i didnt waste $60 on this game.

Just started getting the ‘freeze at launch’ error. The game has been prompting for me to run it in safe mode basically every time I start it up, but up to now it has been working alright. I’ve reinstalled… updated drivers… validated files in Steam Properties… tried running in the specified resolution and still it takes 5 mins to get to the black screen of FAIL.
I’ve been running this game at full tilt with my rig since I first got it. Guess I’ll just have to go screw off for 5-10 mins before playing each time. This customer is unsatisfied….

I have installed this game on my computer. I play it daily. After about a month of play this window comes onto the screen
“steam has found a problem with your local games file. Gamefiles will now be re-acquired from the steam servers.”
When you click OK nothing happens. What is up with this message?
December 21st, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I did eveything too and still crashes on startup. Steam starts automatically installing something, It says nothing else but “installing then a percentage”! and opening after it still crashes.
It was working fine for the first month or so. And ramdomly works every now and then.
Got 2Gb free in RAM so it ain’t that.
Very frustrated with this. I claim it is something to do with steam.
December 21st, 2009 at 2:31 pm
the game crashes to desktop after loading the mission. special ops are ok but singelplayer is not! the system is good enough! does anyone know how to fix it?
December 23rd, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Here are few other tips.. if (some of) the above do not work.
Go to System panel and then hardware.. uninstall the graphic and both the HD Audio drivers (beta drivers if you installed those), reboot and install the version before the beta drivers..
Another tip may be; Installation of the latest EC Generic HID drivers, if they are already installed .. a proper reinstallation (fix) may be done.
Reboot and all should be fine.

* * * * REAL FIX FOR CRASH * * *
I am running Windows 7 x64. After installing and starting the game the game crashes and goes back to the desktop with no error.
Here is what I did to fix it. Real Simple.
1) Uninstall the MW2
2) Browse to the DVD and right click on the MW2 installer file.
PROPERTIES > COMPATIBILITY > RUN THIS PROGRAM IN… Choose Win XP SP2. Check off “RUN THIS PROGRAM AS ADMINISTRATOR”.
Now double click on the install file and re-install the game.
Run the same compatibility mode for the game as you did for the installer. (right click on the file etc…)
I tried absolutely everything and this was the only thing that has worked. I am now able to play the game, no crashes!
If this works for you post back here in the affirmative so everyone else can benefit also.
ENJOY!

Hi,
I haven’t found my problem in none of these posts.
When I try to start the game it crashes my pc. it does a complete reboot. The game asks me to run in safe mode the next time, when I do this (sometimes) i get to the start-up menu. but when the game is starting it crashes again doing a complete reboot. I updated all my audio and video drivers, but this doesn’t help.
I could play my game perfect for a little while, but now it crashes all the time. I don’t get it. I spent hours trying to do things with my resolution. But nothing helps. The crash is very agressive and not healty for my pc !!!! I didn’t change anything and now it crashes ???
My PC:
Q8200 @ 2.33GHZ
3.5 gb
ATI radeon 4870HD
Windows XP service pack 3
PLEASE HELP !!!

Joe’s REAL FIX.
I’ve recently tried joe’s fix, However I didn’t have the installation disk as i’m away from my home for christmas, Furthermore I just tried changing the compatibility on the startup (game) file. Initially it didn’t work but a day or so later i got a prompt on startup of the game talking about the compatibility options. I ok’d that and for the first time since the crashes started, I’ve been able to run the game in two consecutive days crash free.
Not saying that is will work for everyone and i don’t won’t to test fate. I’ll report back in a few weeks to let you know how it is gettting on or early if i stumble across a crash.
If this is a fix for now. JOE you are a LEGEND! it has been driving me insane.

I FOUND A FIX!!!
IF YOU’RE CRASHING OR IF YOU HAVE SINGLE-PLAYER LAGGING ISSUES;
DO THESE BOTH!!!
1. Change the “mssmp3.asi” file (miles folder) to “mssmp3.bak”.
This solves crashes in Modern Warfare 2. ( Did this also for Call of Duty 4)
2. Changing all of the advanced graphic options from Extra to High.
VOILA!

I am a Windows support professional. I am not a games expert but my son plays Call of Duty 4 on my PC for several t=years without problems though there were many bugs when he migrated from COD 4. This Christmas we installed Cod MW 2 from disks. with XP +SP 2, NVidia Ge force, 8800GTX, Dual Core AMD Athlon 64 FX-62, 2800 MHz (14 x 200) and Samsung 2693 digital display. At first if worked OK using the configuration setup for COD 4 but after about thirty minutes play the game crashed and returned to windows.
We have tried running it with a clean install of XP+2 and win 7 and a minimum configuration -that is no programmes except the game and that crashed in the same way. We then in XP tuned the NVidia (December 2009 WHQL drivers) with fine tuning for three hours. The game just crashed sooner.
So I think that this game is definitely compromised software and users who find it crashes will have to wait until the authors have got the bugs out of the software. My impression is that Activision have degenerated into marketers who do not care id their game works properly and they released this game too early to catch the Xmas market – they were very successful – and they have little incentive to improve the software. I have not seen a word from them about the problems even though from Google web search it is evidently widely spread.
For me, now that Xmas is over and mys on and his children have gone home I shall leave the game on the gaming drive where it is installed and if next Christmas he has not found a solution I shall remove it and he van play Cod 4 while he is here.
I recommend all users not to waste time trying to fix Cod MW 2.
Happy New Year to All

Game has ran fine for me at high settings. until the load at the end of the river chase. The loading bar is almost complete when it errors. says that there is not enough memory and that it failed to load a 2d texture. I cannot move peyond this point. I know there is more than enough memory for this game to run fine. I have tried validating the game files and it comes back clean. I have also updated the graphics drivers with the same result. Safe mode does not help either. I will try a reinstall even though I would rather not. I have not seen anyone with a simmilar problem on this board. Dissapointed to say the least.

Intel Prntuim 4 3,0GHz
2,9GHz CPU speed
1,5GB RAM
ATI radeon 3650HD 521mb
As you can see my specs are well above minimum,
but still MW2 is acting weird on my PC.
My internet connection is fine, and I’ve never
had any problems with any other online game.
My scenario:
1.start up MW2 MP
2.find a match
3.the maps starts loading
why does this take so long?
4.it disconnects
this happens on all maps and all gametypes
sometimes im lucky at Rust or Wasteland.
This is the weird part:
for example, i start loading Underpass.
it disconnects, then i start loading Derail,
it disconnects, BUT, i get again Derail.
and it just loads within 5 seconds and i finally
get into the match and have no lag what so ever
and get some kills.
if i cant get a solution for this problem,
i hope that they will put a “select a map” feature
in the next patch so i can choose (for example) Afghan
all the time, so it loads within 5seconds, and doesn’t
disconnect every time i get another map.

Had Modern Warfare 2 working great on Windows 7 Home Premuim, Quad-Core i7 2.66Ghz 6GB ram machine. Updated video card to nVidia GTX260, and Soundblaster XF-i soundcard. Updated all drivers to current versions. Now, program won’t load. Goes to black screen. Checked task manager, and process states the program is not responding. Uninstalled Steam and all MW2 programs. Reinstalled everything, still the same issue remains. Got frustrated and reformated main drive and reinstalled windows 7 as well as all drivers, etc. Still, when starting MW2, program goes to black screen. All RAM checks out as fine with memtest, no MB issues, no video or sound card issues, and I’m frustrated! Every other program works perfectly with the exception of MW2.
Any ideas?

I’ve ran in to a pretty strange problem – my game crashes when I load a new map, right at the end of the loading process “iw4mp.exe” crashes and I have to restart the game.
After a restart or a fresh start I can load the first map with no problem but the second map always makes the game crash, always the second for some reason.
Ive tried to un-install it and re-install it, didnt help, but I forgot to remove the cache files in the steam folder I just removed it via “add / remove programs” but im testing a re-install again this time with removeing every single COD file on my computer before re-installing.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:55 am
I’ve encountered the same problem as ‘Silentbob’. My game also crashes after loading a new map. 9 out of 10 times it’s when i’m loading the 2nd map. The first one is no probem, but when the game is over and the next map is loaded the game crashes because of a problem with iw4mp.exe.
I’m really getting frustrated I’m playing the game now for 2 months, with no problem at all and suddenly yesterday this shit started. And no I did not install or changed anything to my computer, what might have caused this! So if there’s anyone with the same problem who FIXED it…..I would really like to know how!!!!
ps I allready checked the integrity of the game cache and that didn’t resolve the problem

Greetings
When I play CoD MW2 with my friends. At the end of the loading screen I get “Awaiting Challenges…1…”. According to my friends it means that I’m the host. Most likely true due I’m the only one with the NAT on open instead of strict. But about when Awaiting Challenge goes to …2. or …2… it goes rampage and get stuck on and no dots ‘r adding and number wont go to 3 etc. Around ± 15 seconds my screen turns black and my windows 7 64x gives a error and it will look for a solution that doesn’t help at all. Then I have to quit the game by taskmanager.
Please help thank you infront.

Hi,
I am having an error where on load up on either multiplayer or singleplayer it freezes at the small screen. The yellowish MW2 loading screen. Then I Ctr Alt Del to see if anything is happening. It says Modern Warfare 2 is not responding. Ive tried reinstalling MW2 and Steam. Also verified the integrity of the game. Ive pretty much done everything that has been mentioned.
Core 2 duo 3.0

80gb hd (plenty of space)
2x 9800GT 512mb cards
It ran fine for about 2 weeks. Then this happened. It also prompts me to run in safe mode, and still gets frozen on the same loading screen.
Help anyone?

Howdy! I bought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a day or so ago. It works fine and has no problems, so now I wanted to start playing Single Player and have fun doing some missions, that worked fine too, just till I reached Act III: First mission. When I try to load the first mission in Act III the screen just freezez while it’s on the loading bar. If I do CTRL+ALT+DELETE, I can hear the sound in the background, but then when I try to open the game again from the desktop, it’s just black screen but with the sound in the background. How to fix the loading freeze problem, does anybody knows? Thanks
!
January 31st, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Hey everyone! I’ve been having same issues like many other also. Freezing at the loading screen, directx -error, create 2d texture -error and black screen between map change(at loading screen). I play only Multiplayer.
I was sick restarting the game after few matches especialy while playing with friends. And seeking solution thru the internet for many days…
…BUT NOW I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU! THE REAL SOLUTION!
I wont take probs of this becouse they belong to guys here: http://translate.google.fi/translate?hl=fi&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.i3d.net%2Ftechnical-support-cod6-mw2%2F91437-create2dtexture-error.html
But all in all what you have to do is:
-Set ALL video settings to HIGH instead of EXTRA
-Set Specular Maps OFF from the video settings.
-AND if some error still occurs set your game resolution to same as your Desktop one
I was glad to help you! Have a nice gaming everyone!

Hi, I was trying to install the game on my computer. The first time my as soon as the disk went into my drive, I would get the blue screen and had to turn my computer off. Following this, I installed the latest driver for my graphics card and the install started fine. As my computer went through the install, I got to the part where you need to insert the second disk. When I did this, it again went to the blue screen again. I tried reinserting the disks again but I keep getting the blue screen. I went onto my steam account and saw that the install was paused, so I clicked the continue download option and its installing the components, but i dont know if the install will work. When looking at your steam game list, does it only show the multiplayer and single player options? Is there a separate link for the spec ops or is that on the single or multiplayer selections? ill write back in when my download is finished.

Selecting multiplayer causes the game to crash. I get the same message as davis. Its quite annoying as the multiplayer mode is the best part of the game
February 2nd, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Hi guys
Read all your posts cause i’m helping someone who gets a weird grey or brown hangup after a short while ingame. I tried all, from BIOS update, driver cleaning (due to old nvidia), AV uninstalling, service deactivation etc. etc.
Turns out all i needed to do was to yank out the Creative X-Fi. This is not the first time i have seen Creative causing crashes, and it’s the reason why i ALWAYS just stick to the onboard sound. Most of those are fine for games, and those who say they can hear better gamesound using some expensive card must have special ears.
So if you haven’t tried it, then i suggest you do.
February 4th, 2010 at 8:43 pm
—-TO EVERYONE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH FREEZE / CRASH AT LAUNCH!!—-
For singleplayer, If it freezes normally just letting it sit there for a couple minutes works, if not please talk to Activision, for this was not my problem.
For MULTIPLAYER, the solution i was given seems very sensible and seems very widespread seeing no one has found many solutions yet. Here it is, go to “My Computer” and type in the map C:\ Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\common\Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2\zone then click on english folder, delete all the files in this folder (Trust Me I’ve spoken directly to Activison Support for an hour a day 4 days this week trying to get this problem fixed) Now delete all the files in that folder.
Next verify File Integrity by double clicking on the Steam icon in your little icon tray, go Games Tab, Right click on Call of Duty Modern warfare 2 Multiplayer , then go Properties, Local Files, Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
**How it Works**
It’s because the Function “Verify Integrity of Game Cache” only looks for corrupt files and sometimes you have some files that are corrupt but that “action” simply overlooks them because the file is only partially corrupt. So deleting it and doing the “action” “Verify Integrity of Game Cache”, will RE-DOWNLOAD the file and it will not be corrupt.

My problem is only with the multyplayer. I play with lag spikes while my internet connection is 100% green in bars. I have no idea what it can be, cuz I know it’s not my internet connection. When the game is searching for a host it’s 100% me, because my connection pwnz the rest of the people.
When I am the host, the whole game goes into slow-motion. It goes slower when there is alot of dynamic lightning and faster when in tight spaces. Everybody is effected by this, cuz im the host.
The weird thing is, Ive got a great pc that should easily play it on maximum settings. I play any game on maximum. For example, the singleplayer and co-op of mw2 plays suberp on my machine. It’s just the multyplayer thats so screwed up.
I have read 1 other person on this whole list who had the same problem as me. So this problem is pretty unique. I hope someone can help me. I have tried anything I know could help.
I installed a new driver for my graph card, didnt work so I down-graded it, still didnt word so I upgraded it once more.
I upgraded direct x 9 to 10, didnt word so I downgraded to 9.
I completely removed the game and steam and re-installed, didnt work.
I formatted everything on my pc, including windows xp and installed vista, the newest drivers and mw2. (there is nothing else on my pc but that) and still the problem exists (it even became worse, now I have 1 fp10s). Still the singleplayer plays awesome and I dont have any problems with it.
Who knows about this and knows the solution ?

Bug fix: “Call of Duty:Modern Warefare 2 back to desktop crash”
How to fix the ‘back to desktop’ crash that is apparently irregular in occurrence but stops being able to play the campaign.
If you have an ATI graphics card(or maybe another type I haven’t tested anything else) go into “Catalyst control center”, “Advanced…”, the “AI” tab, and tick the “disable Catalyst A.I.” box. Normally that should fix it.
Things i have noticed:
-this only seems to happen under windows 7 x64 bit
-my graphics card is a “ATI mobility Raedon hd 4650″
-my control center version is 2009.0804.2223.38385
Hope this helps others but I’ve tried everything and this is all that works.

hi……i tried this and my game now works…..hope it helps some of you….cheers all………….
Please try the following: Exit Steam entirely. Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\) Rename the “steamapps” folder to “old_steamapps” Re-launch Steam and re-install the game. Once the installation is complete, test the issue. If this resolves the issue, you may copy the new files into the “old_steamapps” folder and rename it to “steamapps” to restore your other games without re-downloading. If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games.

Just bought Modern Warfare 2 a day ago, the problem I face is where ever I start Single Player or Multi Player I will encounter the freezing startup logo screen where the screen just goes black (audio can be heard) and a second later it show the infinity icon and then logo. Finally it went to the main menu.
Is it a wide spread issue?
Is Steam or IW know about this issue?
And this game needs a PATCH.
Btw, I have exceed the min. requirement to run the game.

Hey I got a crappy call of duty as well for here it comes.
When I start the game the screen freezes and unfreezes in about every 5 seconds now I brought the drives to their latest version still no effect so I thought it must be my pc so I checked on my laptop and the same problem it does say my NAT is strict which is bollocks for when I first installed it…it had been open for months…anyways it worked fine for a couple of months and all of the sudden I have this problem and the funny thing is the game works perfectly but only when I started it up and leave it be for 20 mins and it works like diamond.
Anyone got suggestions, ideas? anything extreme is welcome as well

I have a problem which described above that – when start multiplayer on MW2 it starts fine you enter server it loads game, then play for 5 min or less and it suddenly crashes. Then safe mode yes or no doesn’t matter still don’t work, same issue all over again on any resolution. I’m really disappointed that 35 pounds wasted on game that can’t play on line. All my drivers are up to date, I’ve even updated bios on my motherboard from 1st to 6th generation that still didn’t help. Steam never released any patches, I’ve waited 2 months for them hoping that they might resolve the problem. All other games that i have work fine. I have High-end PC but this MW2 just woudn’t have it… :O My Spec – Gigabyte GA-ma790gp-ds4h, Ati radeon 4870×2, 4 4gb corsair 1066 ddr2 ram, Corsair 1000W power supply, windows vista 32bit, AmD 9950 black edition.

Hey i’m wondering what’s with this game. I recently got it and installed it and everything is working just fine until the game locks up. The game racks the temperature of my graphic card to like 80C ~ 100C and sometimes just turns off the screen. I was confused until i found out that when i restarted my computer my graphic card cooled down to 75C and i knew it over heated. Can someone tell me a solution to this problem by emailing me to uchiha-blood@hotmail.com. It might be my retail casing or something but it seems to really rack the temperatures to the point where it just locks up and i can’t play. It doesn’t happen when i play gears of war or left 4 dead 2 or rainbow six vegas 2 but only modern warfare 2

Hi, I was playing call of duty MW2 online my PC when it froze and a warning for my computer came up saying someone got into my windows. It wound up being a virus that keeps bringing up software for me to buy. I took the computer to my friends house and they restored my computer to a week before and then we bought McAfee Virus protection and installed. Now I am having issues trying to get into multiplayer games. I have managed to get into a few free for alls, but for some reason on any other type of game it brings me to the screen where it is searching for games/players and then just searches and never finds anything. While doing this i receive no error messages. Also when i am trying to join invites or games with my friends on Steam i get an error “Unable to join game”. My friends say i might just have to reinstall CoD, which i would rather not do because i will loose all progress i have made. If anyone can help with this problem plz let me know! Thanks!

I FOUND OUT HOW TO STOP THE CRASHING! Changing the desktop and shuting down the other apps WONT work. What u have to do is to go to C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\zone\english and look for the file mp_playlist.ff or mp_playlist.dlc1.ff IF the files are not there than that is the problem, u have to look for them(i found mine in the steam folder). If they are there than they might b corrupted so delete both of them if u have them both. this worked for me hope i works for u
