Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins marks Bioware’s return to its fantasy roots full of Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Humans, and everything in between. Although Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights fans may be delighted by Bioware’s brief departure from the sci-fi universe, it’s unfortunate that there are still a few who are non too pleased by this. Mainly because they couldn’t get the game to launch in the first place. So if you’re one of those who have encountered numerous glitches and errors that needs to be cast out, then check out the fix guide right after the jump and you might find the fix you need.

IMPORTANT:

- Update your nVidia and ATI video / Graphics cards to their latest drivers.

Problem #1: Dragon Age: Origins encounters constant crashing with Windows 7 64bit

Possible Solution #1: (By UncleReemus from the Dragon Age forums)

I was having similar problems as well.

I then downgraded to GeForce Drivers 190.62 and haven’t had a hiccup since!

Maybe try downgrading to 190.xx series drivers as well until a proper solution comes about.

Problem #2: Can’t find PhysxLoader.dll in Dragon Age: Origins

Possible Solution #1: (By Gorath Alpha from the Dragon Age forums)

Try installing a newer Catalyst driver.

Problem #3: Can’t install Dragon Age: Origins / Installation problems

Possible Solution #1: (By Eelan03 from the Dragon Age forums)

Here’s what worked for me (Win7 x64):

- Right-click on Setup.exe and choose Properties

- Compatibility Tab: select “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” and select “Run this program as an administrator” – click OK

I did receive an error about the .NET framework 2 not being compatible, etc. – just cancel it (it’s a separate setup) and game runs fine.

Problem #4: Can’t download or install DLC of Dragon Age: Origins

Possible Solution #1: (By Lorent from the Dragon Age forums)

First you need to find the *.dazip files which for me on Win 7(64) are at
C:\ ProgramData\ Bioware\ DragonAge\ DAUpdater\ Data

Not sure where it will be saved on other computers, and programdata is a hidden folder.

So then you go to C:\ program files (x86)\ electronicarts\ dragonageorigins\ bin_ship

run the daupdater.exe program

you click select dazips and point it at the directory where the dazip files were downloaded on your machine.

Select them all at once, and it will show them in the Daupdater window.
Then highlight them all in the window and click Install selected.

They will now be installed in the proper location.

fixed!

Now as for why its not doing this automatically, I have no idea, the updater was pointing at my documents on my computer for some reason, but doing this let me install the DLC content I was entitled to and it showed up in game correctly.

Problem #5: Keyboard won’t work after playing Dragon Age: Origins for a certain amount of time

Possible Solution #1: (By russj from the Dragon Age forums)

My keyboard stopped working while playing DA and I spent about half an hour reloading again and again as I died repeatedly.  I found that my firewall was putting up a pop-up message and until I alt-TAB back to desktop it refused to work. After closing the pop up, my keyboard worked again.

Problem #6: Dragon Age: Origins keeps crashing / Freezing at certain locations like the chantry in Lothering.

Problem #7: Dragon Age: Origins encounters ” failed to initialize physx ” error message upon startup.

Possible Solution #1: (By Slygar from the Dragon Age forums)

Uninstalling physx and then going in this directory:

C:\\Program Files \\Steam\\steamapps\\common \\dragon age origins\\ redist\\ PhysX_9.09.0408_SystemSoftware

And running the installer there fixed it for me. Spaces added due to forum not letting me post that long of a string without them.

Possible Solution #2: (By NooberandNeeber from the Dragon Age forums)

1) I uninstalled PhysX (AGAIN.)

2) I restarted, just to be safe.

3) I followed stuntpope’s suggestion, and downloaded Driver Sweeper (Here: Click Here I ran Driver Sweeper, checked the little box labeled “PhysX” in the main area (the big white box that takes up most of the Driver Sweeper window and has several check-box-option-things), hit analyze, and cleaned out all the files that appeared.

4) I opened regedit. Went to edit > find (or just press ctrl+F) and searched for Ageia, and found a few files, but no folder. In despair, I scrolled upwards and by chance found… AGEIA (something… I can’t remember, since I deleted it)! So, I deleted that folder.

My directory for Ageia Software(or whatever it’s called) was: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Classes\ VirtualStore\ MACHINE \SOFTWARE\ Ageia Software
(^spaces added because Bioware forum was bitching at me)

I seriously have no idea how I stumbled across this. There’s like 1.5 billion registries.

5) Reinstalled PhysX

6) Ran Dragon Age

7) Rejoyced

Hope that helps anyone else out there who is still having this problem.

Problem #8: Can’t launch Dragon Age: Origins with Steam.

Possible Solution #1: (By Freyar from the Steam Forums)

Make sure your copy of Steam is running with admin privileges, then see if it’ll decrypt
-> If that doesn’t work, then…

Verify the integrity after making sure Steam is running with admin privileges.
-> If that doesn’t work, then…

Delete Dragon Age related NCFs in ../steam/steamapps folder. Restart Steam and tell Dragon Age to reinstall. When it starts downloading, pause the download and verify the integrity again.

Note that after the integrity is verified, Steam should re-download unencrypted versions of the content. Keep in mind this has been said to be between 30MB to 100MB.

Problem #9: Can’t find the Dragon Age: Origins pre-order / DLC items

Solution: (By megafight1 from the Steam forums)

Let’s start with something pretty much everybody has, Blood Dragon Armor. Now, some you may have noticed the item “Blood Dragon Plate” appear in your inventory. And you’re probably wondering why the armor is only a 1-piece set. Well, it’s not. The whole set is 4 pieces, chest, (in your inventory once you redeem it) gloves, boots, and helmet. So at this point, you’re probably wondering how you get the rest of armor. Well, thats easy, you need to save a Dwarven merchant by the name of Bohdan Feddic in the town of Lothering. Once you do, and continue your quest, you’ll appear in an area called “Camp”. Bohdan will have followed you here. At this point, you can speak with Bohdan to buy the remaining pieces of the Blood Dragon Armor, and Bergen’s Honor/Final Reason. Also, you can speak to Bohdan’s son, who is named Sandal, to put enchantments on your weapons. Read the next section below for quicklists, the quicklists provide basic descriptions of where the item is, and how to get it. The quicklist now includes item prices.

Pre-Order Items Quicklist -
1. Blood Dragon Armor (Chest) – In your inventory(Buying Price: Free)
2. Blood Dragon Armor (Helmet) – Buy it at your campsite (Buying Price: 2 gold 55 silver)
3. Blood Dragon Armor (Gloves) – Buy it at your campsite (Buying Price: 2 gold 55 silver)
4. Blood Dragon Armor (Boots) – Buy it at your campsite (Buying Price: 2 gold 55 silver)
5. Wicked Oath – In your inventory (Buying Price: Free)
6. Memory Band – In your inventory (Buying Price: Free
7. Bergen’s Honor – Buy it at your campsite (Buying Price: 2 gold, 26 silver, 25 copper)
8. Final Reason – Buy it at your campsite (Buying Price: ???)
9. Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes – In your inventory (Buying Price: Free)
OTHER DLC QUICKLIST
(Stone Prisoner)
1. Shale – Talk with the merchant in the Pass, he’ll give you a control rod, then go to the town he marks on your map, and get the proper activation phrase for Shale. Then activate Shale.
(Warden’s Keep)
1. Warden Commander Armor – Kill the merchant’s possessed great grandmother, named Slyvia, then loot the armor from her corpse.

Thanks for the solution for Problem #4!

I found the dazip files in the “X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BioWare\Dragon Age\DAUpdater\Data” folder. I’m using XP x64. It should be the same for x86 (32-bit) too.

  2. Threndor Says:

For me, daupdater is actually crashing immediately after the progress bar reaches 100%. I get the customary windows error report with the option to send. This happens for each DLC file I try to install. I am running windows XP sp3. I have recently reinstalled windows.

  3. Jupi Says:

Damn, the #6 is the only problem i have :(

I have attempted both of the methods and have got the game to start after reinstalling the physx and nvidia drivers both the new version and the one that came w/ the game. But it only starts on the first play and when I exit the game it immediately has the error again forcing me to uninstall and then reinstall just to run the game again – both of the solutions are only a temporary fix and do not permanently fix the issue. I am running the game through steam on windows7 64bit. If anyone finds a permanent solution please let me know.

  5. Dirk Says:

With a radeon 4890 card in a w7 ultimat 64 system Physx won’t install at all and so I can’t play the game. You can imagine how p** off I am. Vary bad show for Bioware!!

  6. Russ B Says:

I just bought the game, I have a fairly nice PC and everything installed fine, however when I go to start the game it acts like its loading, drops to fullscreen and then I get the Windows error, asking to send error report or dont send. I reinstalled my video drivers, the entire game and the DirectX drivers and still not working. I am running on a Quad core 2.66Ghz with XFX GeForce 9800 GT, 3gig ram, Win 32x XP pro, I’m pretty pissed off at bioware at this point, I havn’t had problems with a game in a long while and I play Fallout 3, WoW, Aion, Half Life 2, etc… on a regular basis.

  7. skivvis Says:

I’m having a problem that nobody else seems to have (at least that’s the impression I get from zero responses on the fourms and no hits on google).

I discovered the problem when trying to install the toolset, and then the patch, and then upon trying to uninstall. The problem is that all these things error out saying “Dragon Age: Origins can not find install.”

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Zanythos Says:

Having issues with the digital collectors edition on win 7. Almost every single time I load a new area the game goes to “Not Responding” and just lags out, I’ve tested my machine on “can you run it?” and I meet the recommended requirements. My machine is a nforce 710a motherboard with a phenom 9500 (2.2ghz) processor, 8 gig of ram and a geforce 9600gt video card with 512mb ram and the 4.0 shaders. The game runs fine for about the first 5-10 minutes then starts to get a little laggy and totally locks up every time I load a new zone to where I’m having to save and exit and reload the entire game just to move zones. This is really odd and I would appreciate some help, I’m not having any issues with any other games. And yes I have the latest nvidia drivers for motherboard and video card and i tried the 190.62 drivers also to no avail. Please Help!

  9. luciano Says:

and it just keeps crashing no matter how many times i try to load in to the next area. mind you i can go out of the temple and etc but i cant get down and further the storyline.

Running windows 7 on a intel quad core
4gigs of ram with a gforce 8800 GTX

  12. Shaun Says:

    Firstly-
    1) I exceed the system requirements.
    2) I have updated all my drivers / swept my computer as clean as possible of bugs and / or viruses.

I play the game, then after a while,(It seems to be on the basis of time, not location) the game causes my entire system to SHUT DOWN. I must emphasize, as it does not merely crash to the desk top, but shuts my entire system down, as in, the state it was before I turn the power on.

Please help, I have heard just too many good things about this game, especially it being made by bioware, who have made the most applauded mass effect. I realllllly wanna play (0___o)

  13. Kebab Magic Says:

I have downloaded and installed the program via steam, installed fine.

I get to the character select screen and my computer restarts everytime. I have updated drivers and this didn’t work.

    I’m running vista 64bit
    dual radeon 4870×2′s
    i7 chipset, 6gig ram.

Everything else I have runs fine, just this game I can’t get running

  14. Seb Says:

    Problem #2

So I’ve got a good system dual 3,16GHz intel CPU, ATI 4870×2, 4 GB of ocz ram…
I have also installed all the latest drivers but I can’t start the game. I only get the message:
    “…. can’t find PhysXLoader.dll….”

Have already tried to install new and old drivers several times…
oh, and I’m runnin’ Vista 64-bit

Would really welcome all helping hands!!!

    peace

  15. Lans Says:

Problem #7 solved with Driver Sweeper. Now i got Problem #6. When i try to leave Lothering, game shows a dragon video and crashes after it.

  16. Coolface Says:

Mine is similar to #6 except I crash everytime I visit the Witherfang area and the Circle of the Magi tower. Other than that game works fine so I can’t figure out whats wrong.

  17. Max Says:

Hi i try to install dragon age on my pc (enought for the task) XP SP3 and at the end of the installation he tell’s me installation failed data error occure and the cd is brand new, is the second time i exchange it from the gamer shop, i’ve got a quad core 2.66 GHz 4 GB of Ram dell precision p 490 industriel full equip

plz someone can tell me what the hell wrong with this new game Dradon age origins

  18. Zanythos Says:

Okay, well I haven’t gotten my game to completely quit the problems I stated in my previous post however, I have gotten it to not lock up EVERY time I zone (now I can play for about 2-3 hours before the lag fest starts).
What I did was I set the Launcher and the actual real DAO exe’s to compatibility for Win XP SP3, I also upgraded my Direct X from the standard to SDK version, turned Phys X off in the nvidia control panel and set my monitor to 1600×1200 (had it on 1280×1024) and the game runs beautifully for 2-3 hours but after that it still lags out and freezes on area transitions, but hey I can handle every 2-3 hours better than every 2-3 minutes. Hope this helps some else.

  19. Lans Says:

Mine was crashing everytime i try to leave lothering (Problem #6) . Uninstall / Reinstall solved the problem. Just remember to keep config files / saved games when you uninstall. The game shows a dialog asking to keep these files, but if you want to avoid problems, just make a copy of “my documents\bioware” folder. I’ve got only one crash after this, but after game reload it works fine.

My copy of dragon age origins was downloaded from direct2drive and it crashes on the first main menu after the intro videos. It happens in like a second and says dragon ages has stopped working and needs to close. My PC more than meets the specs and i’ve tried everything, going through the drive, re-installing, lowering settings, rolling back drivers, patches, opening every exe file of the game, running as admin and not, opening in windowed mode. Jesus if there is one thing i have not tried then plz tell me cos i need to play this game!

    Thanx in advance

  24. Umaro Says:

Than you for the links. I looked at them, but the solution for my problem is not obvious, or (more probably) I don’t have the skills to understand them.

Meanwhile, I was able to successfully install the game (youhouu!!).

Since the install crashed randomly, I tried to extract each file myself. Like the install, I had crashes. After many trials, I was able to extract them all. The game ran, but it crashed each time I tried a new game.

I then tried another install, and it worked this time. The game run and I can launch a new game.

I don’t have more information, I can just tell that the problem is from the extraction.

If you have the same problem, just try a lot of time, maybe it will work.

    gl all

  25. Andrew Says:

Every time i create a new character and click play, the game goes to the loading screen and then exists, saying that it encountered a problem. My computer exceeds the specifications and I’ve updated all necessary hardware. PLEASE HELP. No one else I’ve noticed, has had this problem and I don’t know what to do.

  26. Carlos Says:

As soon as i click on New game, before i reach character creation or anything…. it says Loading and then i instantly get a “Dragon Age: Origins has encountered a problem and needs to close.” -.-

  27. Moridin314 Says:

My problem is, I can’t even install the game. I put the dvd in the reader, the setup starts, I enter the cd keys and choose “rapid install” (or personalized, doesn’t change anything). then it asks to chose the path where the game will be installed, and whatever I do I can’t get past this. (the “next” icon never lightens up). Maybe this is not a bug, just some stupid thing I forgot to do, but I can’t find it. Anyone can help me, please ?

  28. Lex Says:

Umaro, can you please describe in detail how you extracted the files? I’m having exactly the same problem as you. (except my winXP SP is 2). I tried opening rars in data folder, but more than half of them show as empty, although they show their size.

  29. Wolf321 Says:

After trying everything to keep my computer from crashing randomly, I turned all my fans to high and have not crashed since. It would appear that i was having a overheating problem. the Sad part is I have never had a problem like this before even with fans on low while playing crysis at maxed settings. But anyway I am good to go now.

  30. Lex Says:

I figured out how to unpack files inside .iso, and doingnow just what Umaro did… and will try to clean dust out \ put fan on. Hopefully will help.

For Problem #8 I have found that if you start the LAUNCH DRAGON AGE:ORIGINS LAUNCHER from within Steam, then select configuration, and set the VIDEO settings in the configuration file to unselected to play in Full Screen Mode (so make sure you don’t start the game in full screen mode). Save the settings. The game then worked for me. Hope this helps others whom have experienced similar issues

    Thanks a million badguy001!

I’ve been building a game computer for my kids for Christmas and this Dragon Age via Steam install has been a colossal PITA. This is the only site that had the simple solution to my problem! Not the Steam forums, the EA forums, or the Bioware forums had a straight simple answer – and here it was, #7 – run the PhysX installer in that odd folder that the installer should have done but didn’t. Doh!

    badguy001, you’re the man.

  43. Einzel Says:

My crashes stopped when I turned off all the online uploads of screenshots and such.
I had an internet connection and was logged in. Then the crashes seemed random. I registered some extra feature on my account and the download itself was stuck on 1%. After a while loading a savefile already made Windows crash completely.
probably a problem with your registered account can disallow you to upload achievements thus crashing the game and windows at that.

  44. Philippe Says:

    A solution for problem #3

I was unable to install Dragon Age Origins, a data problem occuring at a random stage of the installation process. I tried to install it a few dozen of times (that’s way too much!) and despite the solutions listed above and some other I found on other sites and on the EA help page on this topic, nothing worked for me. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit Family edition Premium and I though this was the problem until I found this information:

“Some Windows 7 beta users recently started noticing that Explorer and some MSI-based installers were crashing or just not working properly. The problem was discovered to be in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), and disabling the feature fixed the issue. However, Microsoft has posted a second way of fixing the problem, simply deleting the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions.”

For my part, I just deactivated the CEIP and then the installation process succeed at the first attempt. If you want to delete the registry key (I didn’t tried this one) follow the instruction on this page where I found the answer to my problem:

    http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/01/delete-regkey-to-fix-msi-installer-bug-in-windows-7-beta.ars

I hope it will help you to resolve the problem saving you the hours I spent searching for a solution.

I installed Dragon Age: Origins. It worked great. I came to the Broodmother at the Dead Trenches. Now every time I launch the game the upper side of my screen starts blinking black and sometimes the “Welcome to Dragon Age: Origins” window pops up in the main menu. If anybody has the same problem please let me know how to solve it.

When-ever there is a cutscene in certain places there is blocks of blurr. Its sorta annoying when it comes to using in game screen shots as back drops for my desktop. But its something i can live with if there is no fixes or solutions available. Hope next expansion fixes alot of glitches, bugs, problems..

many thanks for reading & many thanks to bioware and EA games for making a game thats given me so much pleasure and enjoyment, entertainment.

Although i downloaded, extracted to iso, mounted with virtual Clonedrive and installed it on Windows 7 (32bit) 7600RTM release,, there is nothing inside Program files/Dragon Age!!!!Not to mention that installation procedure lasted only a few seconds!!! Obviously it wasn’t really installed, even if it showed show and can be uninstalled through control panel/programs.
Any ideas for such a case??? (no problem to locate the patch and key-i’ve passed the key check succesfully.Or i thought i did.)

Problem #6: Turn down video settings to Low and set to Windowed mode. Once you are able to get the area to load then you can turn them back up to your normal settings.

As for the random crashes, I found that this game runs HOT. Get a CPU temp monitor program and make sure you have a good heatsink/fan. I had to upgrade mine for this game to run normal, but it never crashes now.

My brother-in-law is originally from Mexico and even now struggles to speak clear English. His ESL teacher suggested that he watch American television shows to pick up on idioms that are commonly utilized. He loves to Get Free Diablo 2 Items Online. so, every chance he gets, he borrows our laptop to try and do just that. My husband and I would like to see him succeed in this goal so we are considering purchasing him a laptop for his birthday. He would want to buy World wide web access, but I imagine they can afford that on their monthly budget. I haven’t addressed this with my sister yet, but hope to this weekend.

While trying to run Dragon Age – Orgins, I kept getting the “physxloader.dll missing…” error message, so I updated my Nvidia graphics drivers, uninstalled and re-installed DAO, did a registry repair, surfed the web for hours looking for a real answerk, all to no avail.

FINALLY I found a site: Guru3d.com, downloaded and ran the free Driver Sweeper which completely uninstalled Physx from the system (only one of the choices, neat piece of software!). Rebooted and re-installed Physx from the Nvidia site, and tried running DOA again. CHEERS! IT WORKS! Hope this saves someone some time!

I tried to install the new toolset 1.01 but it says that the dragon age game install cannot be found what is the problem?

  69. Barry Says:

I’m running Windows 7 64-bit version. I got the error message where it couldn’t launch PhysxLoader.dll. Tried updating drivers, but it didn’t help. I reinstalled the game, this time, to the default location, not to my E: drive where I usually put games.

It worked. It seems as if, perhaps only under Windows 7 x64, their installation tool messes up a path variable if you go with a custom location. It’s annoying, because my C: drive is just for my OS and is not huge.

I hope this can help someone else with the same problem.

  70. Telephunk Says:

    Hey everyone.

I just recently got a new PC and decided to get DaO to get with it, I’ve heard great things about the game.

But as usual, I’m going through problems like all of you with this game. My story is a bit different though, but first, here are my specs:

    - Windows 7 Home Premium, x64
    - Intel Core i7 860
    - 4G Ram
    - 1G ATI 5770 GFX Card

Ok, so as soon as I get my PC home, I install some software – no worries. I then install DaO, and there weren’t any obstructions at all during installations, I decide to close DaO up after installing it because I didn’t have the time to play. I come back to play it, and my computer doesn’t seem to read DaO at all, in other words, the computer won’t recognise that DaO is in the disc drive. So I’m thinking, this is odd – I then put a DVD into the drive, and that too doesn’t get recognised by the computer what so ever. I then tried double-clicking the disc drive via the “Computer” window you see from the start-up menu, to try and boot it up, and that just caused Windows to freeze up – completely unresponsive.

I tried forcing the task to end via Task Manager, to no avail. So I then try shutting it down by the window you get when you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and my computer wouldn’t shut down at all. I had to force the comp off by holding down the on/off button. (At this stage I’m thinking that it’s a problem with my software/hardware). After rebooting, the computer still refuses to read any discs, and still won’t shut down properly unless I force it to. I put a new DVD Driver into my computer thinking that was the problem. (lol)

The computer gives me the odd chance where it’ll read discs / shut down the way it should. I actually managed to play a bit of DaO, but as I was playing it, during cut-scenes, or when you talk to someone, they aren’t actually saying anything at all and not moving their mouths. You can tell there’s meant to be dialogue because of their gestures. I then try to reinstall the game, and it did it fine again. It’s when after clicking Play, how it redirects you to the Configuration window, and then auto-chooses settings based on your computer – it freezes up! It won’t go pass that tiny little bit. And there’s no way to skip it at all. I had to force the task to end again via task manager. I go to uninstall the game again but it fails to comply because it thinks I have DaO open (which it clearly isn’t!).

Right now my PC is still having trouble shutting down and reading discs (keeping in mind that the DVD Driver is completely fine). So to sum things up, after installing DaO, my computer won’t shut down unless I force it to and around 90% of the time it won’t read discs (any discs!). I’m very frustrated at this point, this game, not even whilst playing it, is messing with my brand new computer.

Sorry for the wall-o-text, I can’t help but elaborate on things. Any solutions is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the game installed correctly; but the main menu seems to be causing problems. It’s not freezing or anything; but it seems that mouse clicks do not register. The mouse icon appears and all, and options are highlighted when I mouse over them, but clicking does nothing. No button on the keyboard or mouse–I have 4 extra mouse buttons–seem to do anything.
