After being several months late to the party, PC gamers can finally get their hands on the PC iteration of Bionic Commando. Although the game features an all-purpose grappling hook to get players out of sticky situations, it is powerless against a much bigger and stronger foe than any of the title’s most powerful bosses, a game-breaking crash. Fortunately, you might just find the solutions you need to combat this threat right after the jump.

DRIVERS
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ALWAYS USE THE LATEST OFFICIAL DRIVERS FOR YOUR HARDWARE.
This includes, but is not limited to, Graphics Cards, PhysX and Sound Cards. Outdated drivers are known to often have compatibility issues with new software. In many cases they can be the source of crashes, system reboots and other undesirable performance affecting effects. So make sure you’ve got the latest drivers installed for all of your relevant devices! If terms like Drivers, Updates and Hardware is alienating you, don’t be afraid to ask someone for help!
Note:
If your game crashes and you get a request from Windows to submit an error report, please take your time to do the few clicks required in order to send this error report. This is especially important if you’re a Windows Vista user. Vista is still a young OS that requires a lot of care and has a lot of catching up to do in terms of compatibility. After doing this, don’t give up hope, you may still find a solution to your problem around here. Because even if Windows tells you you’re on your own, or you have to wait for a future update, there might still be ways to temporarily work around your problem
Note #2:
You can download the Bionic Commando: Rearmed v1.01 patch from here.
-This patch fixes a performance issue related to single core CPUs
I have a(n) audio/video card that fulfills the minimum requirements,
but there is *something wrong going on* with the audio/graphics
Please make sure the drivers for your audio/video card is up to date. The latest drivers should be available on the official website of the manufacturer of your audio/video card.
Also, in the case of graphics, you can also try to enable the default settings in your Graphics Card’s control panel. Or alternatively make sure that Bionic Commando Rearmed is set to be in charge of its own graphics settings in stead of using your custom settings in the Graphic Card’s Control Panel.
Note: If you have a branded computer (such as a Dell, Vaio, HP, ASUS, etc.), there’s a possiblity that you might have to visit the official website for your computer manufacturer in order to find certified/compatible drivers for your computer.
I have a computer that fulfills the hardware requirements,
but the game does not run at optimal performance
There can be many possible reasons as for why this problem occurs;
First:
-Check the game settings. Even though your computer passes the minimum requirements, it doesn’t mean you can run the game on maximum settings.
Second:
-See the solution about drivers. Updated drivers can not only solve audio/video problems, but it can also improve the overall performance of your hardware.
Third:
-Disable/Close other applications running in the background of your computer’s operative system. Running your favorite download manager, web browser, music player, scheduled disk defragmentation, virus scanner and other tasks in the background of your computer can greatly affect performance of the game.
The game activation does not work or claims the key has already been used
Make sure your Activation Key is indeed 1:1 with how it was written when you bought the game. This Activation Key is a unique personal key and should be possible to find both on your profile page at the service you bought the game from and/or also in the proof of purchase/digital receipt for your purchase sent to the e-mail address you’ve provided the online store with.
If your key claims it is used/expired, but is indeed a legit key, try to contact either the store you bought the game from or evt. contact the DRM provider (SecuROM) and explain your problem, they should be able to help you.
Note: Do not share your Activation Key with other people. Both vendor and SecuROM will be unable to help you then. You will have to buy individual keys for individual players. However, do note that in some cases, depending on the Terms of Service/End User License Agreement, you may be permitted to install the game on a second Personal Computer belonging to you, such as an office computer or a laptop.
The game activation tells me my code is invalid
This is an odd error that may occur. If you have installed the game in a different language than English, please try to re-install the game in English and see if activating the game works for you then. If this does not solve the problem, please try to contact either the online vendor you bought the game through or contact SecuROM for further assistance.
Note: For information about how to externally set the language of the game; see the FAQ entry about changing languages.
I’ve used all my activations, will there be a revoke tool?
The answer is: Yes.
Note: This tool is currently not available, but should be expected to come out in the future.
Note 2: Advanced users who knows what they are doing may want to try to run BCR.exe with the /revoke parameter. Please keep in mind that this is currently not a recommended solution and entirely done at your own risk.
I keep getting a SecuROM error about the game not being able to write user data!
If you encounter this error, please make sure that the currently logged in user account does not contain any non-Latin characters that are unique to your language. The solution to this is to create a separate account using only valid letters from A-Z and 0-9.
Note: Since this might be a bit of an annoying solution, having to swap the logged in User Account every time you want to play Bionic Commando Rearmed, you can work around this by starting the game by right-clicking on the game’s shortcut, or main executable, and then select “Run as…”, followed by selecting the option to “Run as the following user”. Enter the log-in details for your new/second account here and then launch the game.
I am unable to start the game after installing
There can be many things that prevents the game from starting, here’s a quick few pointers on things you might want to check;
First:
-Under certain circumstances, computers may require to reboot after installing an application before that application can be started. Try to reboot your computer and see if the game will start.
Second:
-You may want to turn off any applications that can interfere with the game’s online access, or make sure that the game has the sufficient rights online access rights required for online verification and leaderboards.
Third:
-There might be some other software that prevents the game from starting. Try to disable/close all open applications and see if the game will start. Evt. try to start the computer in Safe Mode and see if the game starts.
Fourth:
-If the game gives you some specific error report, try to see if there is a solution provided elsewhere in this topic to the problem reported in the error report.
The game crashes on startup, then goes on to claim that my
PhysX drivers are not up-to-date, but my drivers are the latest!
This was a problem related to some of the early NVIDIA labeled PhysX drivers. Please visit NVIDIA’s site and update to the latest version of the PhysX drivers to solve this problem. If your drivers are up-to-date, try to reinstall the latest version after first uninstalling your current installation.
The game crashes on startup, then it says it’s unable to locate NxCooking.dll
The missing .DLL file is part of PhysX. Please see the solution above about updating your PhysX drivers.
The game starts, but the screen goes black. I can hear audio!
There is a rather high chance that your graphics card is not fully DirectX 9.0c compatible.
This means that your card may not be able to utilize Shader Model 3.0, which Bionic Commando Rearmed requires. Please verify that whether or not your graphics card is supposed to support this.
Note: At the moment, if your card does not support the above mentioned minimum requirement for the game’s graphical side, the only solution to this problem is to replace your graphics card with one that fully supports Shader Model 3.0 and DirectX9.0c.
I am unable to activate Anti-Aliasing! Activating it seems to make graphics go missing and layers vanish!
Because Bionic Commando Rearmed uses something called Deferred-Rendering, AA is not supported/compatible with Rearmed. It is recommended that you disable any custom and/or forced graphics settings for Bionic Commando Rearmed in the Control Panel for your Graphics Card to avoid any potential issues with forced AA.
My graphics card is compatible and my drivers are up to date,
but I get a black screen or flickering when I try to start the game
This issue can be caused by several reasons. The first is the possibility that you have a multi-display setup of some sort. Bionic Commando may not operate properly under a multi-display setup. Try to disable the other monitors in your display settings and leave the one you are planning to play Bionic Commando Rearmed on as your Primary Monitor.
Note: This can also be caused by an unsupported screen resolutions or refresh rates, see the entry below this one for info on how to solve this.
How can I externally edit the game’s display settings?
In the game’s setting’s folder, there is a file called renderer_settings.xml.
(Note: scroll further down for full folder paths if you’re unable to locate this file)
Open this file in a text editor such as notepad and it will look something like this:
<renderer_config>
<d3d_device adapter=”ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 ” resolution=”640 480” refresh_rate=”60” windowed=”false” />
</renderer_config>
the parts you can edit are highlighted in bold letters
Resolution:
This is the output resolution of the game. It is recommended that you only use standard resolutions supported by your graphics card and display device. A few sample resolutions are: “640 480″, “800 600″ and “1024 768″. But the game supports a wide range of resolutions in several aspect ratios. Evt. see what your desktop is currently running at and try to use that, seperating the value with a space instead of the x used in the Display Settings.
Note: Depending on the resolution you set, you might have to change the Aspect Ratio setting in the game’s options in order to get a proper looking picture.
Refresh Rate:
This is how frequently the picture should be refreshed. You must make sure you’re using a refresh rate compatible with your monitor and graphics card. In the Windows Display Settings you can see both what your desktop is running at and you should be able to see other compatible refresh rates.
Windowed
This is whether or not the game should be running in a Window or Full Screen. Changing this value between true or false will alter this.
Note: When using Window Mode, it is recommended that you set the display resolution to something lower than what you are currently using on your Windows Desktop.
If your OS is Windows XP, the default folder for the configuration file should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Local Settings\Application Data\BCR\data\settings
Note: Since some of these folders are considered system folders, they may appear to be hidden in Windows Explorer. Also please note that the name of the folder “Local Settings” possibly containing a localized/translated folder name if your XP installation is in another language than English.
If your OS is Windows Vista, the default folder for the configuration file should be:
C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\BCR\data\setting s
Note: Since some of these folders may be considered system folders, they may appear to be hidden in Windows Explorer. Also please note that some of these folders may contain localized/translated folder paths if you’re Vista installation is in another language than English.
How can I backup my savegames?
In case you’re planning to backup valuable data from your computer or just want to backup your savegame, try to look in the following folder(s):
If your OS is Windows XP, the default folder for savegame data should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Local Settings\Application Data\BCR\saves
Note: Since some of these folders are considered system folders, they may appear to be hidden in Windows Explorer. Also please note that the name of the folder “Local Settings” possibly containing a localized/translated folder name if your XP installation is in another language than English.
If your OS is Windows Vista, the default folder for savegame data should be:
C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\BCR\saves
Note: Since some of these folders may be considered system folders, they may appear to be hidden in Windows Explorer. Also please note that some of these folders may contain localized/translated folder paths if you’re Vista installation is in another language than English.
I have a shared computer, how can I keep more than one save?
There are two ways to allow you to quickly do this:
Solution A:
-Make separate User Accounts on your operative system for each person planning to play the game and make sure they have the necessary user rights to access the game.
Solution B:
-Make a backup of the savedata and start a new game, then make a backup of the current savedata and restore your old savedata when swapping between players.
I have a laptop with dual-core CPU, but the game performance is very very bad
There’s a high chance you have some sort of power saving or performance limiting options turned on. Try to check your laptop’s power saving options and make sure they are set to “Performance” or do not contain any type of performance limiting options enabled.
Note: In Windows Vista, the power options should reachable through just clicking on the Battery Indicator Icon
I have an AMD Athlon x2 CPU, and the game does not always run at optimal performance.
The game should run smooth on this CPU as long as your system memory and graphics card fulfill the requirements of the game. There seems to be a CPU power/priority issue which randomly will make the game under perform thanks to lack of system resource priority. This should be detectable from the very moment you start the game or enter the map screen. The temporary solution is, for now, to start and exit the game until you’ve got it running “smoother” than what it does when it does not run smooth.
Note: This will be updated if a better or more suitable permanent solution is found.
I try to start the game and it tells me WSOCK32.DLL cannot be found.
One of the things you’ve probably noticed if you’ve been doing a little bit of troubleshooting yourself is that you certainly do have this file. The solution to this problem is both an odd and simple one: Close/Terminate the application known as Xfire and try to start the game.
Can I change the language of an installation?
Yes. In the game’s installation folder you can find a file called context.xml, open this file in a text editor such as Notepad.
Find the line: <script base=”data” exec=”lib/setups/startup” core=”core” enforce_texture_sets=”false” language=”english” override_allow_autoload=”true”/>.
In the part that says “language=”english”", you can set the preferred language. Please do not that this may be case sensitive.
Supported languages are: “english”, “french”, “italian”, “german” and “spanish”.

Hi guys, I have a problem here. I installed the game but I can’t start it, the os reports that the system can’t reach or access the bionic_commando.exe, or I don’t have the right authorization to run it. So I changed all the user’s authorization to full control but still failed. Can someboby gives me a hand?

Hi christi,
I think that a certain windows update may have caused your problem. Some people have the exact same issue but with different games.
One person was able to solve his problem by uninstalling his anti-virus program, PC-cillin.
Some did the following: Start > Run > control userpasswords2 to access the admin. There you can modify your account to allow full access to the files you want to use. Just make sure that you remember your admin password.

I fixed the ” Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file ” problem by making the game’s install folder an exception in my AVG Resident sheild.
The game works fine now, except it’s in Russian… haha
