Problem #1: Prototype has no sound / audio or sound / audio is very low.
Solution #1: (By Activision Mod, Rudy from the Activision forums)
Many people seem to have sound issues, and so far it all appear to be people running on Windows Vista.
First off, if you do NOT have Vista Service Pack 2, then install it. It has solved the problem for many people already, particularly the problem where game characters have high voices.
Vista 32 bit SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&DisplayLang=en
Vista 64 bit SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&DisplayLang=en
If that does not do the trick, then try changing the hardware accelaration . It has been reported that it needs to be set to around 44100 Hz to fix it, 48000 is still too high.
In vista to find this, you right-click the speaker in lower right, select Playback Devices, find your soundcard in the list, right-click and choose properties, go to advanced tab, in the Default Format dropdown list choose 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) or 24 bit, 44100 Hz (Studio Quality).
In XP to find this, Click START, Settings, Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, Speaker Settings, Advanced, Performance, and change the hardware accelaration there.
When you have no sound at all, then try disabling AGP in the dxdiag (start, run, dxdiag, sound tab)
Also make sure your sound drivers are up-to-date.
Problem #2: Prototype displays a black screen ( input mode not supported) upon booting the game.
Possible Solution #1: (By KXMusashi from Gamefaqs)
had this issue too and I found out that my native resolution isn’t supported since it is a 720i resolution. However lowering my resolution to 1024×786 has allowed me to play. Once I got in the game I changed my desktop again to the normal resolution and it runs fine.
Another issue I have seen that seems common is the amount of ram on you video card. If it is less then a gig then you won’t be able to go that high even if it is a supported resolution. The read me will list out the supported resolutions and the required ram needed.
Solution #2: (By Panopticon from the Activision forums)
– Click Start and then on Run / Or press the Windows Key + R to open Run from the keyboard.–
– Type dxdiag and press OK
– Go to the last part which says “More Help” and then on Override Refresh Rate in that window
– Here you can input a value (usually between 50-100) and start the game!
For me the value 60 did the trick and I now get a picture instead of black screen with sound.
Solution #3: (By Hoodoo34 from the Activision Forums)
Create a prototype shortcut ( It creates one by default but if you erased it or whatever, go into the program files/activision/prototype, right click on prototypef and create a shortcut). After you create it, right click the shortcut and click properties. There should be a directory path called ”Target” and it should have something like this: “C:\Program Files\Activision\Prototype\prototypef.exe”
So now you write windowed behind it so it will be like( write just windowed not -windowed
“C:\Program Files\Activision\Prototype\prototypef.exe” windowed
Now you can go into the game and change the resolution. I set mine as low as I can and when I started the game, it gave the Input not supported for a sec but then the game booted up nicely.
Problem #3: Prototype has missing / incomplete textures in-game. No textures in-game.
Solution #1:
Disable forced AA (anti-aliasing) on your graphics card’s control panel.
Problem #3: Characters have squeaky, high pitch voices — they sound like Chipmunks.
Solution #1: (By RaidSoft from the Activision forums)
I turned down the format on the soundcard (had it on 24-bit 96000 Hz) and the voices are not chipmunks anymore
Problem #4: Prototype runs very slow / slow framerate.
Solution #1: (By Melonhead from the Activision forums)
I checked my device manager for any strange goings on……. I had a lot of HID devices showing, around twenty in all!
I just disabled the ones that I didn’t know about, just leaving my bluetooth mouse and keyboard active. Game works perfectly now, really chuffed.
– This guide is still incomplete. There are still glitches and errors that don’t have any workarounds yet. If you can’t find fix you’re looking for, please check the comment section or come back at a later date as this guide will continue to be updated –

Well I tried your method regarding the windows XP, but it didn’t work :\

June 13th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
my cutscenes are near slow motion. even the sound are in slow motion. ingame works fine. but cutscene got problem. pls help
June 13th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
lalala, have you tried going to the device manager and disable the devices you don’t need?
Dandruff, try disabling force AA in your video cards control panel.
Najes, can you elaborate on your problem? And don’t worry, I’m sure there’s another fix to your problem, just give me time to find it.
June 13th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
There is a possible resolution fix worth noting (from the forums): run prototype in windows mode, by adding “windowed” (no quotation marks) at the end of the shortcut. Then, your native resolution should be unlocked (this goes for normal resolutions, not the weird ones I’ve been seeing). Set it to that resolution, and open up task manager. Go to applications tab (not processes tab). Select prototype & set it to maximized (this will put it into fullscreen). For me, the mouse won’t go away when I do this, but it’s much better than playing at 1024×768. Also, my fps wasn’t impacted one bit nor were any sound anomalies introduced, so it’s questionable if the dev’s move have any basis.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
yes already tried that. still no luck. i’ve also changed my audio format to 44100 hz 16 bit but still the same prob. pls help
June 14th, 2009 at 7:32 am
I have a little prob, so has a friend of mine I don’t know if you guys also have this but
i play on a widescreen laptop, but when i want to change the resolution in the game i can’t even select 1600*900?
is there any way i can do something about this or should i wait for a patch or fix to come out…
Greetz.
June 14th, 2009 at 10:39 am
My game jumps constantly, Even at 800*600 on low settings, it jumps the same amount as 1440*900 on full so i can pretty much rule out a graphics problem, I have disabled all the HID devices i can, all that are left are mouse and keyboard, and Ive tried setting my audio all over the place with no luck, i updated my video and sound drivers and installed the DXversion that came with the game >.< Any ideas?
June 14th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Muffin, you could try disabling forced AA in both your graphic settings and the video card control panel.
Maarten, I’m not sure how to fix your resolution problem yet. For the meantime, stick to the resolution that works.
Lalala, try testing different resolutions. Some people have found a fix buy changing to a different resolution. I can’t guarantee that it will work though
June 14th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
widescreen laptop resolution i use is 1680 x 1050, works great, not sure ive ever heard of 1600 x 900 being standard in wide screens, try 1 up or down from it though and you should be able to make it work
June 15th, 2009 at 1:33 am
What about the crackling noise in cutscenes n slow mo cutscenes? Other than that the game runs perfectly no crashes, lagging and stuff like that. Just the crackling noise in cutscenes. Ruins game immersion for me.
June 15th, 2009 at 5:17 am
Framerate workaround till patch comes:
Remove 00audio.rcf from Prototype folder, it will improve framerates but give missing sounds. Clearly rigs are fine since each time i move this file from Prototype folder and play i get stable frames on max settings A,A 4x and res 1280×1024. We need a patch fix badly something is wrong with this game’s audio
June 15th, 2009 at 5:56 am
i have the black screen problem and i tried with the refresh rate, and the window mode but it did not work.the window mode did not work it was the same like without putting window mode at the properties.
i have ati radeo 9600se with 256 mb
June 15th, 2009 at 6:43 am
Pty, I hope this works: lower your computer resolution to 640×480.
maddoggzy, I’m not sure how to fix that crackling sound problem. Have you updated your sound card?
June 15th, 2009 at 7:02 am
thanks for the quick reply but my monitor is samsung syncmaster 152 with 15″ the lowest resolution i can go is 800×600.anyway i think whatever i do it won’t work because of my video card.
my pc specs are 1gb ram,and amd athlon x64 3000+.
i will probably have to upgrade….
June 15th, 2009 at 7:18 am
I’m trying the window thing to change my resolution but I can’t move the mouse any where on the bottom of the screen so I’m unable to change it. Should have know something like this would never work right out of the box.
June 15th, 2009 at 7:27 am
My game crashes after 10 minutes of gameplay
please help
June 15th, 2009 at 8:06 am
Sound problem fix (for me anyway).
I had the bad crackling sounds and slow motion cut scenes, the game play was also a little slow, I had to run everything on low and it still ran like poop.
Change your audio format to 24-bit 44100Hz which will fix the chipmunk noise only, but as for the slow motion crackling sounds what I did was unplig my bluetooth mouse and keyboard and now everything can be run on high and play very smooth, also the cut scenes run perfect. I wish there was a way to fix without having to unplug my mouse everytime but it works for now, and to play I just use an xbox contorller.
Hope this helps for some of you.
June 15th, 2009 at 9:09 am
tried everything, fixed some things like chipmunk voices and missing textures but there’s still no voice the cg cutscenes (there is music and audio though), and alex mercer is very quite during the ingame cutscenes. Please help.

In the mission Crossing the T, when I am about to enter the military building I shall lead the Hunter to, or any nearby buildings. They look different to the others in graphic, and when I “touch” one of those buildings it goes into a loading screen and dosen’t stop. I set the audio to 44100 16 bit and disabled the AA in the graphic card control panel. As well as set the compality to run as Windows XP SP 2 ( I heard that could help too) But none of it helped..
June 15th, 2009 at 10:30 am
My game from Steam keeps replaying the intro cutscene everytime it loads. It gets to the screen where it says to “press Enter”, then it replays the same cutscene over and over, no matter what I press.
Little help, here?
June 15th, 2009 at 11:14 am
I have a problem during the first level.
I consume the special ops commander and it just… crashes before the cutscene with the web of intrigue starts
June 15th, 2009 at 11:19 am
I’m still looking into the crash problems. The only suggestion I can give right now is to update the video card and sound card and keep the graphics settings low. Try testing out different resolutions too. Some people have been able to fix their game by changing to a specific resolution.
Here’s another solution that might work:
Create a new game, quit, and then load your save file.
And to those still having sound problems, try changing your speaker setting to 7.1 before playing the game.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Random places throughout the game, i get the ‘loading’ screen that never goes away. it happens just as im flying over the city, throughtout lots of side quests and even main quests making it impossible for me to keep playing.
If anyone has figured out how to get rid of this please let me know, can’t believe they realeased a game this buggy.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Yeah Kane, it’s the same problem I have.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:41 am
Oh wow, I never expected this many bugs. And I apologize to those I haven’t provided a solution yet.
To those who have loading problems, try deleting the profile.bin file in the prototype folder. It worked for a few people but I can’t guarantee that this fix will do any good. It might be the opposite. So do this at your own discretion.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:52 am
The only profile.bin i could find was in mydocs/prototype, i hope that isnt the one you ment because i deleted it and it didnt work for me. still get the loading at the same areas.
Currently i just got my powers back, i go to a side quest area and i get the loading screen, it happens in more places but i now know it happens there (for me) and ive tried all the fixes i can find but it keeps happenening.
I would ignore that area however its happened on around 4 other side quests and their respective areas making 50% of the city unplayable.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:53 am
It didn’t work for me, and did nothing at all really. But I’m glad someone is looking for a solution to it
June 15th, 2009 at 11:54 am
P.S no need to apologize its not like were paying you to do this thanks for trying :), i hope activision will release a working fix soon as I was really enjoying this game.
June 15th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Yeah same here. I am only at mission 4 or something when the loading bug comes. So far the game is kickass! And i really haven’t started yet. So I hope a solution will come soon, so I can start playing it for real.
June 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Ye it’s defently an amazing game, my fav part is just running around the city. Besides the bugs the only thing I didn’t like was that you have to choose easy or normal… atm im finding normal really easy. Don’t know why game designers don’t let people choose hard especialy people who have played games for most of their lives.
June 15th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Hehe, I’m glad you guys appreciate my help
And look at the bright side, at least you guys can even play the game haha! And Some people thought bethesda was bad with their DLCs.
Hopefully I can find a workaround to that loading screen problem soon.
June 15th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Noticed that around some of the crash areas there are buildings that seem to be out of place, the buildings have hardly any gfx and apear just to be textured with a single appearance. The loading screen appears when i get close to these buildings. Maybe this means that it is a texture bug, could be caused by gfx card aswell id guess.
If it is then my gfx card is a ‘NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS’. Trying to include anything that might help figure out any problems. MN inlude your gfx card aswell so we can see if there are any similarities.
June 15th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
If it’s a texture bug then try disabling forced AA in your graphics card control panel. It’s a longshot since that fix is for those with missing textures/ orange screen.
June 15th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Kane that is exactly the problem I have. Cause with the mission I need to lead those Hunter Monters to a military building. And that building have hardly any gfx and is just textured with a single appearance. And when I am about to climb the building, it’s like having the cheat “noclip” on, cause I kinda vanishes inside the building, and then the “eternal loading screen” appears…
June 15th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
And I have disabled forced AA in my control panel, as well as the AA ingame. And just updated my gfx card driver as well.
June 15th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Mine is also a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB..
June 15th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Well dont i feel stupid, but many my stupidness can help others out.
New Nvidia driver came out may this year that i didn’t know about, simply installed. restarted and omg what a shocker its working. sry for wasing anyones time. MN I didnt disable my AA just updated driver and restarted comp and it ’seems’ to work (fingers crossed).
June 15th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Nice! Got a link to the driver you installed?
June 15th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 185.85
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=en-us
I had version 183.somthing, soon as I updated to 185.85 it’s all looking good.
June 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I’m glad that you guys found a fix. I guess the best solutions are usually the simplest ones. In this case, it’s updating the video card.
June 15th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
So Kane your game works perfectly now?
June 15th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I downloaded the driver, installed it and restarted my computer. And it unfortunately didn’t work..:(
June 15th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
I can’t seem to set my resolution higher than 1280×720. I have the option to set it to 480×420 / 800×600 / 1280×720. Anybody else got that problem?
June 15th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
even using windowed mode i have a black window with some low audio
i don’t think it’s an unsuppoted resolution because i suppode to have a message in my screen saying (out of frequency) any idea
June 15th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
baha, you could try accessing the game by clicking the .exe file in the prototype folder.
June 15th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
my games been working fine for ~30 mins with that simple update. unlucky yours dosnt :(.
ye for some reason game dosnt let u go to 1600 etc resolution which sux.
June 15th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
still have the same problem
June 15th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
ok, When I first installed it I had to be lucky to play, sometime it freezes at the first cutscene(when Alex kills some soliders) sometimes it didn’t, but most if it, it freezes, but when I got to the gameplay, wow, Awesome, but after like 10 minutes I got this incredible lag, then when I killed the commander, there’s a cutscene…and it freezes and I have to reboot my computer… I updated my video card(had no sound issue :P) reinstalled the game, and now it ALWAYS freezes at the first cutscene
:( and I have lower my graphics but it still won’t work
They really need to make a patch QUICK, now when I know how fun the game is I’m going nuts about this issue!!! and lol, I have probably today rebooted my computer like 20 times. It’s still maybe just luck to see the cutscene and pass it, but like 90 % is the black screen/freeze
June 15th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

June 15th, 2009 at 9:30 pm

512mb and over can go up to 1600+
im also getting a crash, just after i fall out of the building in the Crossing the Threshhold and consume the marine BAM, it crashs…
June 15th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

I enter his sister’s apartment(Nara?). Then, it goes into a loading screen and dosen’t stop.
I’d try to reload my save or open a new one, quit, then load my old save.
Furthermore, I’d reinstall my game two times and It didn’t work out.
Besides, the light of the HD keep “red” forever and still occupy my CPU.

My cutscenes are running in slow motion. It has nothing to do with my soundcard because I just changed to my old “soundblaster live!” and I have the same problem.

Okay, so far I have seen some great advice on this site, so I can only hope that I can get some help.
I installed the game perfectly fine, and the first time around, I opted not to install the DirectX 9.0 install, and the game installed well enough, but when I actually started up the game, I got a notice saying that basically the game would play without DirectX (When I swore that I had 9.0 already) and wouldn’t play with it until I reiunstalled my game. So I did, and nothing changes, no audio whatsoever, I have tried the dxdiag solution, no go, and I tried reinstalling the game WITH DirectX 9.0, also a no go. My soundcard is soundblaster XFi, if that helps, and I have tried reducing the hardware acceleration, with no help at all, so I have run out of things to do.

If anyone has figured out how to get rid of this please let me know, can’t believe they realeased a game this buggy.]]
This is nothing, ever tried to play an unpatched version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R?
Also, just to let people know my config (my game has been working pretty much great) there are a few times (randomly) where the screen freezes and i have to ctrl-alt-del out then just go back to the game and it then unfreezes, but otherwise my web of intrigue is 44% full, all cutscenes work great, sound is a little quite but nothing is missing (i just have to turn up the sound), Playing with a keyboard and mouse (havn’t had a problem yet).
Im running Vista 32 Home Premium SP2 (fresh install)
quad core Q6600
9800GTX using 185.85 drivers and directx (downloaded latest directx from microsoft website)
3Gig mem
Just using my onboard motherboard sound 5.1, Realtek HD drivers
June 16th, 2009 at 11:03 am
My problem is that when i start the game at the main menu i press new/continue load the save or start a game it starts to load and then it crashes i need god damned help plz had this game like for a week now and it still isnt workin.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:22 am
i installed the game but when i started there was absolutely no sound it works fine out of the game and i even turned all the options up to full but its still dead quiet
June 16th, 2009 at 11:42 am
I had problems with the sound and fps in the cutscenes, to the point I couldn’t even watch them at all, I tried everything and still the same, but then I tried deleting 00audio.rcf just like Onikrulz said, and now it works great
I guess I’m missing some sounds, but anyway it’s not so bad, as most of them are still there.
So if you have the same problem with the cutscenes try that
June 16th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
ok.. yeeeahh i got the game working no more orange screen.. i just reinstalled the game and installed the directX that came with the game, drivers and putted aplication controled on all nvidia settings.. and no more orange screen.. but now i have a nwe problem
when i’m starting web of intrigues… the loading screen just don’t end.. just stays there and nothing more… PLEASE HELP
June 16th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
My big problem is that I have NO AUDIO except for when I open and close the disc drive and the “welcome mat” of the game opens, that is the ONLY bit of the game that makes any sound at all.
Does any person at all have any idea what exact audio files are supposed to be inside the Audio folder?
June 16th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
i have only black screen with some voices even in windowed mode so is there any other ways to change resolution ????

June 16th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
WTF?

i tried playing the game in XP, worked fine but the sound in cutscenes was BAD an in slomo grr.
Now i installed windows 7 64bit an tried the game again but still the same
resolution still is 1280×800 ????????
win7 64bit
8gig Ram
285 GTX 2 gig videocard
dual 3.2
??? wtf
tried every sound settings
game is AWSOME but this kinda takes the fun away
June 16th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
At first I experienced no problems with the game apart from some general graphical lag, although after a few plays I found the “web of intrigue” videos would start having problems with the sound and generally running slower as the video progressed.
In case this helps anyone else with similar issues was able to resolve the problems, via: 1) updating my graphics drivers
and
2) Installing the windows Vista service pack 2.
I hope this may be of use to someone and that ya’ll can also enjoy this great game
June 16th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I deleted 00audio.rcf and now it works…almost….now it freezes on random places!!! what the hell!!
but I at least came through that first level and saved so now I can start from my save
lol
June 16th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
when i’m starting the second misson… the loading screen just don’t end.. just stays there and nothing more…loading and loading.. PLEASE HELP
June 16th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
As I found in some comments crashing may be caused by Nvidia/EVGA utils. In my case it was Nvidia Control Panel. After closing the game run smooth.
June 16th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Okay thats awsome, I plugged in my 5.1 surround sound headset (http://www.trittontechnologies.com/products/TRIGA611.htm) and the sound works perfectly now. I hope theres a fix for those people without a surround sound audio source.
June 17th, 2009 at 3:22 am
Help us with this shitty black screen with sounds pl0x!!!
We wanna play…patch plz ;d

June 17th, 2009 at 4:49 am
I disabled all the sound options in the game and now it runs perfect, no freezes at all, but having no sound takes away much of the fun
I maybe should try one of those Sound solutions.
June 17th, 2009 at 4:55 am
My game worked just fine, but today i tried to play the game and when i loaded the game it went normal for like 5 seconds and then it just crashed. I tried loading different saves but i can’t play, it crashes after five secs on every save, i don’t know what to do…
June 17th, 2009 at 7:10 am
My game crashes. I can play for a few minutes, halfway into what I assume is sort of a tutorial level, then it will crash to desktop with no warnings and no error messages. I have tried all of the above, although I never had any problems with neither sound nor picture.
Now, don’t tell me to turn the graphics down. My computer is an pandimensional obsidian monolith. It cost me damn near $10 000 and it’s only a few month old. This thing plots world domination in my absence. It can chew up Crysis and Far Cry 2 and spit them out without batting it’s creepy, red, unblinking eye. At the same time.
It’s not a matter of muscle.
I know I haven’t given you much information so I don’t really expect a proper reply. This is really just an ‘FYI’. For those friendly helpful types out there: I did say that I have tried “all of the above”, so please don’t repeat what has already been said in this place. That will be less than helpful.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:55 am
beta Nvidia drivers 186.08 have been released http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7_winvista_32bit_186.08_beta_uk.html which MAY help some people but seeing as i have had no problems with the 185.85 drivers they’re what im sticking with
June 17th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I’m using the beta drivers, as they fix a fault with another one of my games, and I keep getting full system crashes about 2mins into the game. As in the game freezes along with sound and everything and requires a hard reset. I’m on Vista 64 runnning 1280×1024 everything else maxed inc. AA on a AMD X2 6000+, 4G of fast (recently tested) RAM, and a single 8800GT 512. tried everything short of driver rollback, and suspect its nothing to do with that.
June 17th, 2009 at 11:27 am
ok, finally i found a solution for the black screen (tested only for ati radeon x series) using ati tray tools i locked the refresh rate to 70 hz and the game now is running without crashes but i still have the sound problem and the gameplay some times turn in slow motion (fps drop )
June 17th, 2009 at 11:29 am
note: the refresh rate overriding using dxdiag didn’t work for me
June 17th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
I have found a solution to the “NO SOUND” problem. In windows XP a few have found that there is not any sound at all. This apparently has been because of the modem speaker. You can disable the modem audio devices in the device manager, or what i had to do, uninstall the modem altogether. It works perfectly now. This is supposed to be a fix for both XP SP2/SP3.
June 17th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
Just to maybe help some people withh sound issues.
I use Windows XP64 bit and when I started the game it just failed to play sound at all. After like the 10th restart of the game I got a screen saying some file could not be found, and looking closer at it I realized it was a DX9 component. Although I had DX9 installed ofc I reinstalled from the DVD…. didn’t help, or so I thought. Now I need to start the game, press enter when it tells me to, and then WAIT for the game to run the “demo” scene, after that - sound works just fine.
June 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
this is a funnny one. i installed prototype, and play couple of minutes (bad sound sometimes and during the cutscenes, and nothing can fix that) but after i exit the game and try to install office 2003, it says that it can not install office because i have prototype installed, and if i want office i have to press ok to deinstall prototype. i press ok and after couple of seconds office 2003 start installing. now i see that there is no prototype, it was uninstallet in just 3 secs…winch is quite impossible. i don’t understand what is the connection between those two programs, but maybe it can help someone…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:55 am
I have kinda solve my issue
I said I deleted 00.audio.rcf and disabled all the sound in the game, I came to a mission when I reach the blue market, nothing happened, I was stuck, could only look around, I thought I had found some other issue first, then I thought “wait maybe someone is gonna say something…let’s try take that Audiofile back, but it’s probably gonna crash :S” but it didn’t, I raised all the game sound up too. So if your game crashes/freezes somewhere in the beginning, delete the 00.audio.rcf or/and disable all game sounds, when you surpass your crash/freeze part, Save then take 00.audio.rcf back, you need it though to complete some missions(but I needed it in like mission 15 or something so you don’t need to take it back right after 1 level), and raise up your game sound, if you then start to crash/freeze on some other place just do the same thing until you past it and save, hope this helps
June 18th, 2009 at 3:58 am
and I was right, there was an ingame talk, after taking back that audiofile, the guy said something and I completed the level
June 18th, 2009 at 7:04 am
I have a problem with loading my game….New Game worls perfectly,but when I save,and exit I can’t load it,game crash……pls help…..
June 18th, 2009 at 8:07 am
ATTENTION ZONEALARM USERS! - If you’re running Prototype and as soon as you click New Game, it freezes on the loading screen, here is a possible reason. It might be your firewall! If you are using ZoneAlarm like me, it asks you for your permission to use the internet. But the pop-up doesn’t appear properly and therefore you can’t access it to click ‘accept’ or ‘decline’ - that’s why your screen crashes and you can’t do anything.
To solve this, put ZoneAlarm on ‘Game Mode’ or go to Program Control>Programs and allow Prototype to use the internet. If you are using ZoneAlarm, i hope this helps!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:45 am
I found solution conserning the “no sound at all” issue. Im using multioutput roland soundcard and closing the extra outputs didnt work. Solution for me was to install newest direct 9.0c from microsoft webpage, after that everything worked perfectly. Hope this solves someones problem
June 18th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Right, I fixed the full system crash. Its the new beta drivers. I rolled back, then reinstalled DX9c (even though i’m on vista) from the MS website (not the disk), and everything was gravy. Loaded up a game on Prototype and the game freezes as soon as I load the game, literally. WTF. It worked before, I even played it for about a minute after. Now every game I load freezes straight away.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
the solution for sound didnt work
June 19th, 2009 at 4:33 am
I got this god damned problem that i cant play prototype when i start the game new/load it loads loads…. and then crashes i need help!!
June 19th, 2009 at 8:38 am

June 19th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Well, guys I guess we’ll need to wait for a patch, or get a better graphic card, or just wait for our next computer …
June 19th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I found the solution to my problem, It was my microsoft siderwinder mouse, so I put another mouse in and it worked perfectly, no probs. Ive fell in love with the game lol
June 19th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
everything works but i cant seem to be able to load from save files it crashes but if i start a new game it work fine any idea what wrong
June 20th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
It’s just so weird because my brother has this game as well and he is playing it just fine no problems I would need more information to base my theory on but what I think it is, is different platforms like intel and amd for instance I have an amd phenom II 945BE and my brother has an intel C2quad 9650 he has no problem and runs the game at full with well over 140fps but I remember when I first installed the game I could get only to the part where you first meet your sister and than it crashed and after that as some one called it I get the eternal loading screen now heres the funny thing.. my brother sent me his saved game but hes half way through it but just for laughs I had him send me the save and magically I was able to load..I”m going to test the beta nvidia drivers out as well but I think that the game wasnt coded to well and a patch is needed badly.. otherwise this is a waste of money… haha like i payed for it .
June 21st, 2009 at 12:26 am
[...] Re: Help needed in prototype It’s a problem with the game’s audio itself. The sound just isn’t audible enough. Try this website for some common solutions: Prototype PC Sound Issues [...]
June 21st, 2009 at 3:59 am
Ive found a way past at least one crash…. ignore it. just tab back into game and keep playing. don’t press close or windows will kill the game. just tab back in and play as normal.

June 22nd, 2009 at 12:28 pm
You could try reinstalling the game… I don’t know if that will fix anything though.
Oh wait! Don’t reinstall yet. Try copying a save file from someone who has completed that mission.
Or you can try this fix which helped a few people get pass the Crossing the T mission:
In the prototype folder there are four files: 00woi.rcf - 03woi.rcf containing the memories (woi=web of intrigue). I didn’t bother to find out which it is that contains the bad memory, so I simply renamed all of them and started the game.
This time Alex consumes the soldier, but no memory is played and the game continues to run smoothly as ever. After the next safe you can change the names back to the original state, but beware of the entry “Jesse Arel” when visiting the web of intrigue, any attempt to replay this memory will crash the game.
If anyone finds out which of the .rcf’s is the bad one, tell us. But between this cutscene and the next save are no other memories, so you don’t miss anything.
All credits goes to wintermute

Can anyone help me?
I have the orange sky texture problem so I decided I would try updating Graphics drivers (none available) and directx… Still nothing… I read about forcing AA… How do you force it with nVidia Cards?
June 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Just go to the nVidia graphics card control panel and look for AA settings. You’re supposed to disable AA not enable it. It will make the game look like crap but at least the orange texture problem is gone.
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:02 pm
By the control panel do you mean this: http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/cloudintheskies/nvidiacp.jpg
That’s the only control panel I can actually find for nVidia…
(Sorry about it being .jpg)…
June 22nd, 2009 at 3:25 pm
My computer: i7 with ATI HD 4890 and 9.6 drivers. I have the missing textures problem. I disabled AtiAi and nothing. anything else?
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Cloudintheskies, try sliding the bar all the way to performance, not quality.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:51 am
i to you all.. i’m bringing good news (at least for me) i’ve finished the game.. first i had the orange sky, i just unnistalled the game and install it again, installed the directX that came with the game.. good, sometimes the game just freezes, just stay there, what do you do? simple alt tab and alt tab back to game… and its done.. well i’ve finished the game with one problem that i couldn’t just resolve it.. tried everything.. lowering my soundig to 44100 just made my game freeze like hell!! in cutscenes its just becomes toooooo slooww i can’t see a cutscene it’s too anoying.. but the game runs smooth when playing normal.. hope you guys can help me with that.. thanks

June 23rd, 2009 at 8:05 am
hello, I ve got the same problems than MN and Kane and I can’t finish a mission because I have to enter into the bugged area of the map… Into this area I’ve got an endless loading screen which appear…
What the fuck with Activision ? Where the fuck is the patch ??! It is abused !
I’m running the game on a MacBook pro core 2 duo 2,4 GHZ with 2 Gig of ram and a 8600M GT…
I usually have no problems with bew games
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 am
I use Windows Xp sp3 to play, and the bugged game area is here from the beggining of the game. It is on the cost, on the west of the house of Peter sister..!
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:31 am
i’ve solved that problem too.. slow motion cutscenes.. delete audio file that begins with 00.
and it’s done.. hope i help someone..
cheers!
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:41 am
Yay for me, I managed to fix my problem, just want to check whether this, very bad quality, screenshot is the way it’s supposed to look when perfect?
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/cloudintheskies/nvidia_fixed.png
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:56 am
Aside from the aliasing, your screenshot looks fine imo.
Oh wait, that’s not a screenshot you took? Prototype at full settings looks a tad better than that. Just smooth out the jaggies and voila, you got Prototype running at full settings. Well, that’s what it looks when I play it.
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I have it (In that screenie) all medium graphics and low shadow so yeah, I can make it better… xD
Thanks for making this article anyway, it helped alot, although when I installed SP2 (Vista) I started blue screens all the time, so I uninstalled it, I was getting BSOD in Safe Mode too, which is a really bad sign…
So now, my PC is fine again…
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Hey!!! A note for some: I did a comparison of the DX9.0c on the disk, and the version of the same on Microsoft. The DX on the disk is functional, but lacks some of the mor in-depth drivers. If you have problems after downloading the Microsoft.com version, then I have 2 solutions:
1: If using vista, SERVICEPACK UPDATE!!!!! The video/sound problems mostly are fixed by this, unless the error is in the game (as some have found). Do ALL the servicepacks, and that should remove 85-95% of the bugs.
2: If using XP, again, servicepack! However, that will not fix all the issues, since XP is older than vista. Do all the updates available, then all of the driver updates available. I had an odd error in XP: my Firewire card driver were OLD (as in NEVER UPDATED OLD) and, for some unknowable reason, prototype died. I updated, and soon I was bodysurfin’ like a MANIAC!
***I have 2 Windows XP SP3 machines, 3 Vista ultimate SP2 PC’s, and a gaming rig setup to triple boot between XP SP3, Vita Ultimate SP2, and Windows 7 Beta. After checking everything I could Prototype prevailed.
I hope this helped!

FIX FOR VERY LOW FRAMERATE!!!
If you have Kaspersky running then pause protection and you will find the game runs absolutely perfectly afterwards. I tried many solutions (Disabling HID devices improved performance a bit) and Kaspersky was the one thing causing the major slowness for me.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Hey, if anyone has the problem where the game crashes at random points (mine always crashed during the first 5 min game play where the helicopters come in, just after the tanks), try turning the Graphic Detail? and Shadow Detail in video options down to low. Fixed it for me, playing niiiice now

KIllerpriest: I had the same problem, the problem is the 00.audio file you took away, take it back, I hope you didn’t deleted it(hope you still have it in the garbage map) cause the black guy is gonna say something when you stand in the blue thing, but the sound is in just that file, that’s why nothing happens, but then I was like “now it’s gonna crash probably :(” but I tried disable all game sounds and it works fine now, I still have the 00.audio file cause you probably need it somewhere else too
June 24th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
My game blackscreens after first level. Really fucking annoying. Also, the cutscene at the start is fucked up; all stuttery.
June 25th, 2009 at 7:35 am
I have a problem that apparently no one else is having! It freezes every time I go to save or it auto saves! Anyone else having this or has heard of it!?
June 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Hey I have a big problem at the “Open Conspiracy” mission, on the 3rd or 4th convoy the game doesnt look like it’s loaded all the textures and it looks all blurry when I enter the area, then the game enters a eternal Load screen >< oh and btw, I know a Black screen fix that hasn’t been listed on any forum so far- media tablet drivers and utilities, uninstalling them helped in my case
June 25th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
EDIT*** Reinstalled and disabled “Drive Sentry” fixed the problem! Runs smooth as butter and saves without a problem now!
June 25th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

June 26th, 2009 at 1:38 am
HUNTER, try going to the device manager and disable all the HID devices you don’t need. This solution partly fixes the framerate problem so hopefully it will also fix your loading problem.

Read the names of each device carefully. If the device doesn’t seem all that important, then disable it. Some people were able to disable all the devices except for the mouse and keyboard.
June 26th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Tsepeto, try disabling the unimodem drivers under the “sound, video and game controllers” in the device manager.

my computer obviously decided the web of intrique files were not worthy to be placed on the hard-drive and subsequently i have no WOI videos. so now i have to find a way to get the damm files onto my computer without my scary all-powerfull quad-core finding out about it
but i surpose this game is in better condition then some other games that have been made such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Call of Duty 1 oh and who could forget daggerfall! ( it still makes me shiver when i think about the glitches in that game.)

oh yeah, divyansh , a reintall should fix your problem and if not if is a driver problem and updating to the latest should fix your problem.

Everyone having problem with freezes: This might be pretty obvious but took me a while to figure out: Disable your virus scanner. Mine freezed the game every few minutes for up to 60 seconds. Disabled it, works like a charm now. Great game btw.

June 29th, 2009 at 2:36 am
Well just for example this tablet here:°° http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Small-Pen-Tablet-Only/dp/B000V9T2JA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246264411&sr=8-1 °° i meant these things. And most of them need to get driver installed and have propably other programms such as hotkeymanager or something else which is only for it. And these “two” things can also cause Prototype to get a Blackscreen at startup. And after I deinstalled mine….. Prototype worked.

please help
July 1st, 2009 at 12:15 pm
i keep getting crashes in-game. the game either freezes or goes black randomly and i get a “has to close, send report?” message. i’ve noticed that it’s usually when i’m on top of a building or looking at the sky, and a helicopter is usually near by. this leads me to believe it’s a graphical error that’s making it crash, but i’ve updated both DirectX and my video card’s drivers and the problem persists. i can’t play for more than 2 minutes before it crashes. my computer far exceeds the requirements for the game.
it’s odd, but i actually managed to beat the game on Easy with no more than a dozen crashes, and those were usually at the point where the screen goes into a slow-mo black-and-white filter as it says “mission completed” or whatever, but now it crashes constantly in new games and even my old one. i’ve no clue what to do!
July 1st, 2009 at 12:31 pm
UPDATE: i’ve tried turning off my virus-scanner, reducing my graphical quality, turning off AA completely, and still nothing.

Hi ColliderSA,
Try this: Start a new game, quit and then load your save game. Some people claim that helped solve their load game issue.

July 4th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
we still need a patch to fix this prob out now
July 6th, 2009 at 2:42 am
First, the game is not buggy..that being said it’s not ALWAYS a good idea to update video drivers everytime you get a new game, from what I’m seeing here most of the problems are being caused by bluetooth devices which the game is not built for. what it is built to use is either a mouse and keyboard of the standard type or a 360 controller for windows. If you look at the system requirements on the back of the box (double everything it says) Those are at best the very minimum) Video and Audio drivers are notorious for not playing well with each other. But Video drivers don’t play well with anything..If your useing an ATI card HD X1900 or better Try rolling back the display driver from the latest which is 9.6 for vista and xp. if your useing win-7 use the drivers that Win-7 installed, any others won’t work. also any ATI cards below X2100 are all now in a Legacy structure. I can’t comment on Nvidia cards since I dont use them but depending on what OS your running the same should apply, if you have the latest display drivers roll it back a notch or 2. But For Windows 7 RC users, use the drivers it installs whether you have a ATI or Nvidia card. I have had no problems running this game on my rig, Video or Audio related. And I’m running Win-7 RC Build 7100. I use a 360 controller, AMD Phenom 9950 X4, ATI Radeon HD 3870X2, 4gb ram, 28.5″ HDMI Display 1920 x 1200 res. 1tb WD HDD. SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio with a Logitec Z5500 5.1 sound system, Microsoft Sidewinder X6 mouse and Keyboard.(wired).

game freezes at pause menu every time
July 7th, 2009 at 3:18 am
Bought this game thinking I would have a ‘problem-free ride’… I was wrong.
The cutscenes run slow-mo and it makes me mad that a huge company could not properly test a game for such a simple thing as this one before releasing it, whatever happened to in-house product testing, have they now gotten rid of them to save money and made ‘US’ the testers…?
July 7th, 2009 at 9:11 am
I had the saound problem like many had and what i did was starting the cd or mount the cd whatever and go into extras and install directx .. i got sound and all but now i cant get past the intro but still there is sound
July 7th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
im still having problem with this game, i can’t play it :(, it was like a pop up not support like that..i follow your instruction already.. any idea? O.O
July 8th, 2009 at 4:14 am
I have an issue as well. On the mission “Biological Imperative”,
After you park the tank in front of the hospital, the doctor runs inside and the cutscene then ends. you are then supposed to enter the hospital too. I walk to the mission glowing-yellow-star at the entrance and right click. The screen goes black and then after a second or two, the ‘loading’ screen comes up and never goes away.
This isn’t the tips/hints loading screen, it’s just the word “loading” which fades to black over and over again with creepy music in the background.
So far, I’ve tried removing all the woi.rcf files, deleting the profile.bin file, making a new save and reloading, changing resolutions, removing the 00audio.rcf file, reinstalling, and restarting my computer. I don’t have troubles with random crashing, sound stutters, volume (i downloaded an unofficial patch), graphics problems, texture popping or anything else like that. It’s just this one mission that sends me to infinite loading.
Nothing has worked and I’m sorta anxious to find out what happens to the doctor and get my powers back.

July 9th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Hello dear gents,
I did not read all of the WHINY BITCHY FAGGOTRY above, but to solve Problem #4: Prototype runs very slow / slow framerate, follow these steps:
1. Download RivaTuner 2. Install it 3. Start -> All programs -> RivaTuner -> D3DOverrider 4. Run prototypef -> Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> Windows Task Manager -> Processes -> right click on prototypef -> Set priority -> Realtime or High -> Maximize prototype window -> Play.
No more ANNOYING TEARING and everyone is happy as rabbits in heat.
Yours sincerely, Anonymous.
July 9th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Okay, so I had the problem with the neverending loading screen too. But for some reason, after trying some stuff mentioned in this thread, it’s gone.
I’m playing Prototype on a MacBook Pro (the aluminium version), with Bootcamp. my graph card is an NVidia GeForce 8600M GT.
What I did was:
- I deleted the profile.bin in mydocs\prototype\
- I disabled AA in the game options
- Since I couldn’t find “forced AA” in my NVidia utility, I dragged my global preferences slider to “performance” in the “3D configuration” (sorry, I can’t really explain it since I’m Dutch, and my Windows’ lanuage is too)
- Oh and I changed ‘prototypepef.exe’’s priority to ‘high’, like described by ANONYMOUS above. Thought it might help a bit.
I hope some of you guys might find this info usefull.
Cheers

hey guys, im not sure if you all have faced this before. my game can start up and everything, but when i attempt to start a new game or continue a game, it loads for 2-3 secs and i manage to see the words slowly forming “avoi…” or other words before crashing, saying that the application has stopped working. July 13th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
Well goddamn i also have the blackscreen problem and i’ve tried EVERYFREAKINGTHING like changing my video card, refresh rate, dxdiag, rivatuner, driver update, ati tray icons etc… and nothing seems to work… Ooh damn i remember the time when games where meant to be played, not to be sold… like Unreal.
Guess i’ll just stick to S.T.A.L.K.E.R clear sky. I HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO PLAY D: but it is an awesome game though
July 13th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
The game runs almost fine, but at the first level right after i consume the Special ops commander and the web of intrigue is complete… The camera turns up against the sky and it stops there.. Then it’s like 1 fpm (frame per minute)
Pleeeease help?
July 14th, 2009 at 4:24 am
Game runs perfectly and is awesome. But a few levels in, when I have to lead the hunters to the top of the military building, I get near the checkpoint and the screen fades black as if to load a cut-scene. However it stays black and the background noises continue to play. Anyone know what to do?

Dell Precision 490 - Two quad-Core Xeon 2.6ghz
160GB (7,200rpm) SATA2 Hard Drive
16GB DDR2 677 Quad Channel FBD Memory
XFX 8800 GTX 768mb DDR3
onboard dell sigmatel (trying to see if there is newer drivers than the ones on the dell site)
runs perfect with all settings on high right up until I get to the point where I am thrown out of the gentech building, I then consume a guard and then crash… every time I reload and start from that part it continues to crash.
next time it does will try debug and see what info visual studio gives me (although I doubt I will understand it much, I am a newbie to vs)
Not Happy at all, was loving this game up until now.
wish I had bought it on my xbox or ps3 now
July 15th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Unhandled exception at 0×74cd5108 in prototypef.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0×000006c5.
Thats the most I can get out of visual studio, cant get any more out of it than that, basically have a black square covering the top left part of the screen and my mouse dissapears.
Every single game I have run under vista 64bit has been perfect up until now, this is really peeing me off as it looks like I will either have to wait for a patch in the vain hope that it fixes it or failing that fork out for money for a ps3 or xbox version (which no way in hell am I going to do).
feeling very depressed right now, feel like I have just poured £35 down the drain.
July 16th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
use a logitech dual action controller for PC @ everyone and their controller problems or only an xbox controller will work etc nonesense
the game even recognizes the buttons as 1-8 during the in-game tutorials/loading screens/etc
the scratchy sound issue @ random and during cutscenes and loading screen in XP on a sound blaster audigy platinum ZS 2 is really lame for such a highly anticipated activision title
don’t developers even play-test this crap anymore?
it’s even sponsored by alienware or “plays best on” or whatever I think lol
but yeah the audigy card or creative labs are really obscure so I mean why bother seeing if they will even run the crap audio this was made with
I ran this on a 5 thousand dollar alienware and just gave up fixing the sound issues
if I’d bought this I would have taken it into my driveway and shot the retail box w. a 12 gauge combat mossberg
ps. bite one activision
GL to the rest until a patch comes out just wait I guess
at least now you know how to use a PC controller on the bright side
July 16th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Im here to say after i fixed my orange screen by moving the nvidia control panel of my graphics card to performance over quality, the game worked perfect, ofc though it didnt look great but i never had any more problems from then on except for the fact that the sound was a bit bad, then again i got a crappy sound card… xD for those still looking to fix the game and get it working, dont stop cause its well worth your time as its a great game and i’ve clocked it already
July 19th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Hi ALL, many probs with this game some info here,
http://forums.activision.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1758
I’m new to the forum but been building pc’s for almost 20 years (techie by trade), never was much of a gamer but i love to hammer my systems with video crunching, it may suprise many gamers that i was given this game as a gift and ran it on my workshop pc for a fortnight no probs until today when i changed my cpu for an Intel 6400 Core 2 Duo @2.13GHz, game restarts my pc about 10-15 mins in, hence i ended up on this and other discussions within the forum. Being a hardware tech I’m intrigued more than anything else as to why such a modern game cant seem to support many dual core & quad core cpu’s.
My humble workshop pc spec was
P4 3.0GHz cpu (single core)
ASROCK 775i65G mobo
1.5GB DDR400
ATI RADEON HD3650 (8X AGP)
XP PRO +SP2
the game ran fine until i changed the cpu to the dual core mentioned above……now getn my toolkit test gear out LOL
HM?
July 19th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I currently cannot set my game resolution above 1280×800, AA above x2, all other options are on high( not sure if they go any higher).
My System is:
CPU Type QuadCore Intel Core i7 920, 2800 MHz
System Memory 6134 MB (DDR3-1066 DDR3 SDRAM)
Video Adapter ATI Radeon Vapor-X HD 4870 (2048 MB) Catalyst 9.6
OS Vista Home Basic 64bit Sp2
Any ideas as to how i can get the resolution higher? my screen supports higher than 1280×1024.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:57 am
The game used to work fine for me till I installed the DirectX March update (i had to for Monkey Island SE). Since then, going in the game: slow framerate & crackling sound even in 640×480.
D3DOveride does not help, updated soundcard driver without much success either (graphic card ones were up to speed).
A bit lost as what can be the reason (apart from the DirectX update)
July 21st, 2009 at 7:45 am

The thing that worked for me to get around the game freezing on startup is to change the shortcut to run in “windows 2000 compatibility mode” It worked like a charm for me.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:27 am
yep i got the endless loading screen i have xp sp3 i can detail my specs if needed BUuuuut! this worked 100% off my friends portable hard drive and i played it for 2hours without Annnnny problems
but when i copyed it off his hard drive onto mine i try to continue my game and i get the endless loading screen
so as a tip to people maybe try playing it off a external hard drive or portable hard drive
if anyone knows of a fix For the love of GoD! tell us theres SOo many people with the endless loading screen problem.. =/
July 27th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Upon inserting the disk, the auto-run installer thing pops open. When I click “Install,” a command prompt window pops up briefly, then disappears. Then doesn’t install. >_> Like, nothing happens.
I’m running:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (2.66 Ghz)
EVGA GeForce 8800GT (512MB on-board)
2gigs DDR3 mem
Sound Blaster Audigy
Err. Like 500gigs of free hard drive space.
I dunno what’s up.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
*bump* it works on my friends harddrive but not mine? help plz =/ this game is awesome for the 2hours i got to play it for anyone know of a fix or something ??? D:
July 28th, 2009 at 1:53 am
@Lansain
just go to mycomputer right click on the disk and hit “Explore” then you should find a “Setup.exe” or “install.exe” or something like that basically this way is so that your telling it to install without having to wait for the auto play ect. sounds like your disk is either trying to open up the wrong install or your not an Admin on the pc your putting it on
Remember if you have a problem with Prototype think of all options you can do yourself and if that doesn’t work then go to the experts at Google
as for me hell i defraged my pc tried it on multible hard drives changeing the sound settings and the AA settings disabling useless utilities and programs on start up and Still Nothing at All i still get a endless loading screen on mine if any1 knows anything just post
July 28th, 2009 at 4:05 am
I got the same problem as original. That freking endless loading screen is really gettin to me now. Can’t even go to the next mission.
I have noticed that the loading screen only appears when I go near buildings that have a single texture. As well if you look closely the texture around those buildings that look out of place don’t look right either. As soon as I enter the area where the texture’s not right I get the endless loading screen.
It’s been like this for a week now.
Tried updating direcX, updating graphics drivers, turning AA off in the game and on graphics control panel also tried other countless minor things which i thought might help but nothing works yet not to my surprise.
If anyone knows how to fix it PLEASE post it on here as there are many with the same problem.
Anyone know when a patch is being released?
July 28th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
For Those having problems with increasing resolution, here is a short illustration how I modified my shortcut using Solution #3: (By Hoodoo34 from the Activision Forums) but in full screen-”Windowed” mode

I’m experiencing crashes to the desktop whenever I consume the helicopter pilot and it starts the web of intrigue cutscene. Also during an earlier web of intrigue cutscene (I can’t remember which one) it froze with some black artifacts across the screen like it was a corrupted image. I think I was able to skip it and play onwards, but I can’t remember.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:42 am
I’ve updated my graphic card drivers but I still experienced the same crash to desktop, so I tried to skip the cutscene and it worked. The other web of intrigue cutscenes after the helicopter pilot consume played fine without a hitch.
July 30th, 2009 at 2:26 am

Here guys, I found this fix. It worked wonders for me! It says confirmed on Windows XP, I have Windows 7 and it worked for me, so I assume it will work for Vista also.
http://ahkong.net/prototype-sound-fix/
I got problems again later in the game so I also extracted 01audio.rcf and it was all fixed. Heres another expansion I also did: If you extract the other .rcf’s to there location, like the art folder, it decreased my loading time to 1 second lol.
Hope this helps!

hopefully that will help others with the sound problem but not me as ive still not been able to play this im so Fuc***g angry at this stupid bug im still getting a endless loading screen and no1 has Any Fu**ing Fix for it yet!

Hi folks,
I have the following problem:
for some time in the storyline I was unable to enter any military base - when trying, I was getting “eternal loading screen”. Now, it’s gotten much worse. After the mission ahere the commando dude injects you and you lose your powers, I can no longer enter safe house to acquire new mission. I’m able to enter other events on the map as well as military bases (at last) but what the hell?! I can’t play the game any more as I can’t get next mission!
Besides that game runs fine with no errors (only the mouse’s sensitivity in military bases seems to be reduced to almost none, making it impossible to look around - in options I have it on Medium - 10), however I tried numerous fixes for other things and they didn’t help.
My specs: Phenom II x2 550 BE 3.1GHz, Radeon HD 4850 1GB, 2GB DDR2 800, XP SP3,
playing on integrated 7.1 Realtek HD as it seems to cause no problems so far, I previously used Audigy with kX project’s drivers but it happened to be problematic in games
Also, here is another discussion with hints that may help some of you guys:
(I don’t mean to advertise other website, it’s not my site ofc, but it might help some)

explanation: I cannot enter safe house (mission acquisition) because when I try to I get forever loading screen, like I had with military bases before that mission with injection.
August 8th, 2009 at 7:24 am
okey guys, I FIXED IT.
HERE IS HOW TO FIX MANY GAME ERRORS:
get the ScarfaceExplorer application and use it to extract following files:
00audio.rcf
01audio.rcf
00woi.rcf
01woi.rcf
02woi.rcf
03woi.rcf
art.rcf
movies.rcf
HERE IS HOW TO DO IT:
open up ScarfaceExplorer and in the file menu select 00audio.rcf. Now in the Extract menu select “All files…” and choose the main Prototype Directory. Not a subdirectory of the game, but the main directory. (Why? Because the .rcf files already contain directory tree and they will be extracted as well, so audio files will automagically be placed in audio, art in art and movies in movies. NO NEED to create those dirs.) Repeat the procedure for all files listed above (Open -> Extract all files into main Prototype directory). I hope you understand that the point is not to place the files themselves in the main Prototype directory, but that specific directories will be created by the ScarfaceExplorer.
BE AWARE THOUGH! THE GAME after extracting files listed above WILL HAVE about 16 GB so make sure you have enough free space on HDD.
This way I fixed my forever-eternal loading screens when trying to enter events, military bases and safe house mission acquisition.
Now I only have to fix the mouse problem I had before
GOOD LUCK!

“Another issue I have seen that seems common is the amount of ram on you video card. If it is less then a gig then you won’t be able to go that high even if it is a supported resolution. The read me will list out the supported resolutions and the required ram needed.”
Is there a way to overrun this?
My comp specs aren’t that bad - a quad core procesor, a gf 260 gtx and 4 gigs of ram - all the other games have no problem running in my native resolution (that is 1920×1080), but I get ‘out of range’ error with prototype…

“The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you’re running. Check your computer’s system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.”

I tested the game with 2 pcs i have:
- Celerom 420 1,6Ghz; 2GB Ram; Geforce 8600GT; OnBoard IDT sound chip, Intel chipset.
- Celerom 420 1,6Ghz; 2GB Ram; Geforce 8600GT; OnBoard Cmedia sound chip, VIA chipset.
Instaled clean WinXP SP3, newest drivers for motherboard, vga and sound, newest directx 9.
NO HID DEVICES.
In both machines i have the same problem, bad sound and slow framerate in the “ESC” menu and in cutscenes, need luck to don’t crash in cutscenes.
I renamed the “00audio.rcf” to “____00audio.rcf”, now the game play realy fast, with everthing maximized in control panel and in the game menu, in both machines.
Someone said the location of the buged buildings, until now the bug in not there.

I hope this helps someone.
I have had prototype since release, it was marred by stutters and odd audio. The stutter turned out to be my cpu overheating ( I have an AMD 6000×2 ), got that fixed with thermal paste and a new cooler. I also had audio issues, crackling.. low audio, i tracked this down to having the acceleration slider for sound in dxdiag ( win key + r then dxdiag ) set to no acceleration. Game now runs sweet, 75fps avg. Hope this helps guys, happy hunting

I have the ever eternal loading screen problem… sometimes… i have the crappy sound during video scenes… i have a ps2 joypad and it didnt work in game so i bought a xbox controller
this game, whether some of the posters believe it or not is uber-buggy. updated all drivers, gfx, snd, blootooth, even HID drivers… nothing works.
its now the 18th of october and theres been no patch from the makers or publishers of the game… so i assume they dont give a f*ck.
My son is sitting playing the game now and when it does something stupid like crashes i restart the pc and start the game again. sometimes this works, sometimes it doesnt.
The reason you are all running round in circles with this game is because the problem is simply that the coding and direct x integration is faulty.. and thats coming from me who makes games professionally (al-beit nothing quite as massive as prototype) but then none of my games crash unless its a problem with the .net framework, lol.
SO HERES THE SOLUTION:
My computer plays the wolverine game properly.. i havent seen many people complaining about it either so do yourself a favour and go buy that game, u wont be disappointed. And everyone of you send 1 email to prototypes maker every day and tell them to get it bloody fixed. theyll soon get pissed off reading the hate mail and either give you your money back or, well you never know your luck, they might bring out a fix

Hey all. If you have windows VISTA, then the problem IS PROBABLY THE SP UPDATE!!! All versions of vista (Meaning Pro, Buisness, etc.) Have Service packs out. The service pack fixes EVERYTHING. The Eternal loading screen of doom, the chipmunks-annoy-atron, most framerate issues, and other misc issues! UPDATE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALEX MERCER!!!

Just forget it guy’s
It’s been months without a patch.
Their just collecting their money, after all thats the world we live in today.
All about the dollars an it doesn’t matter its US that pay’s the dollars.
Why not just post a big finger on the prototype website so the gamers know how they really think about us.
This is why ppl download games TRY BEFORE YOU BUY … if it’s a good game buy it, if its like prototype delete it………
selling stuff that is not working fully because of the 65k bugs hehehe…..
hell they should pay the gamers for their waste of time, money an energy….
1: sound BAD
2: gameplay gets boring (doing the same shit over an over)
3: am running on a GTX285 2 gig an my res is weird not even 1280×1024 ??????
4: support ?????? what support??????
5: lag
6: grapics ?? i mean for a game with those specs it should look good but it doesn’t
explane this to me then why does a game as mass effect 2 looks beter, plays beter but needs only half the specs???????
In short : this game suxs big time an looks a bit like microsoft

windows 7 users DO NOT USE THE SP TO RUN PROTOTYPE!
My game ran fine until i searched up about the crackling sound thing. I went on to change the bit rate and also used the XP SP3 to run it in. What i immediately found is that the frame rate suffered dramatically - making everything SLOW AS HELL!! - and when it loaded to the maind screen, i couldn’t start a new game or load any exisiting save files (it would just end with a black screen and have sound running).
But i unchecked the “Run this program in compatibility more for:” under properties, and now everything is back to normal. Maybe trying that before anything else, cauz i see alot of “cant load new game posts here”
I still dont know if the sound problem is fixed or not, but i guess a running game is better than one that doesnt.
Hope this helps,
