Fallout 3 Broken Steel Crash to Desktop / CTD, Crash After Exit / Exiting, Unable to Exit properly, Can’t Download, Crashes / Problems, Fix / Fixes and Solutions
Written by badguy001
The latest Fallout DLC, Broken Steel is up and ready for download. Aside from adding new missions and an ending to the Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave conflict, it also comes packed with a number of new crashes, glitches and problems. If you’re one of those who have been stricken with a game breaking bug then you might just find your answer to it right after the jump.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————–
Important:
- Before installing Broken Steel, make sure that you have Fallout Patch 1.5 (v1.5) installed -
- If you have encountered problems or solutions not listed in this guide, feel free to post it in the comment section below. No registration required
———————————————————————————————————————————————————
Problem: Game doesn’t exit properly, unable to exit, game crashes after exiting / exit
Possible Solution #1: By Sabster from the Steam forums
Copied the DLC stuff into the various directories where Fallout 3 is installed. After doing that, game exited normally.
I found where the files are installed from GFWL (it’s in like users\<name>\programdata (which is hidden folder)\microsoft, etc… (just search for Anchor*.* (or *.esm)).
Once you’ve found the files - go to the fallout 3 directory - there’s a data folder inside that. Go into the movies folder and rename “2 weeks later.bik” to “2 weeks later.old” and then rename “B09.bik” to “B09.old”
Once you’ve renamed the two files; copy the 5 .bik files from where Broken Steel is installed above into the movies folder (if you renamed the two files; it won’t overwrite any files.
Now copy the .bsa and .esm files into the Fallout 3\Data folder.
If you did that right, when you start up Fallout 3 - click data files; and you should now see Broken Steel listed - check it and your done; it’s now loaded like a normal mod. And the problem goes away.
Problem #2: Can’t move / control character after getting the message ” Two weeks later ”
Possible Solution #1: By wolfpup from the Bethsoft forums
Open console (~ Key) and type:
enableplayercontrols
Possible Solution #1 (for those who’ve installed the free Play mod): By JensenB from the Bethsoft forums
(thanks to ~okl for the correction)
Ok - problem solved.
I did it this way:
1) Travel to the citadell
2) console: completequest 00014e91 (Take it Back)
3) console: startquest 03000802 (Death from Above.) mind all the zeroes and 03 must be replaced by 01 if no previous DLC has been installed or 02 if only either The Pitt or Anchorage are present.
4) console: prid 000210e6 (Lyons)
5) console: moveto player
6) Talk to Lyons an recieve the first mission of broken steel
Problem #3: Can’t download Broken Steel / Download of item failed. Package metadata is not valid
Possible Solution #1: By Wedge the Jedi from the gamesforwindows forums
1. Make sure that your clock is set to the current time
2. Restart the Marketplace application and log in again
Problem #4: Broken Steel crashes when you reach level 21 or level 22
Possible Solution #1: By billypnats from thenexusforums
OK after some searching, the following mods are not compatible with broken steel
FOOK
MMM
Anchorage DLC
Possible Solution #2: By live4themoment from the Bethsoft forums
1. Startup Fallout 3 WITHOUT signing into G4WL.
2. Load up an old saved game
3. Sign into G4WL
4. Save new game
5. Shut down Fallout 3 and start the game back up, this time signing into G4WL from the beginning.
6. Load up the newly created saved game.
Problem should be solved, I did this and before I did I was stuck @ lv 20, but as soon as I loaded up the new save game, my experience points were no longer locked.
Hope this works for more people than just me!
Problem #5: Can’t find Paladin Tristan
Problem #6: Broken Steel Crashes Randomly / Every Few Minutes
Possible Solution #1: By MarStinson from the bethsoft forums — I can’t guarantee that this will work though.
1. copy the DLC (.esm and .bsa) from its default location (\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC and then drill down a couple more until you get to folders with the .esm and .bsa files - those are the DLCs) to Fallout 3\Data
2. put the original DLC into a .zip folders in the default folders (it takes up roughly double the disk space that way, but it’s better than hozing yourself is something goes haywire)
3. Copy your saved games out of your Live account folder to the regular save folder (move or make copies of anything you’d like to keep from your non-GFWL saves)
4. Disable GFWL (there’s a utility to do that, but I don’t have a linkie, sorry)
5. Launch FO3 and add the DLC as if it were a regular mod (if you did not move the original DLC files somewhere else, it WILL conflict)
6. Play
A few problems to be aware of:
1. you WILL NOT gain achievements for GFWL (the DLC is a regular mod as far as the game is concerned and GFWL is disabled)
2. you may or may not have to go back and repeat any completed DLC quests (I completed The Pitt and the game completely forgot about it; Werner’s and the Outcasts’ messages showed up within a few minutes, but it might have had something to do with the order in which things were loading - YMMV)
3. it may or may not conflict with any existing mods (I’m only running 1 little one and the Unofficial FO3 patch - no conflicts yet - YMMV)
To undo it:
1. go into Data Files and uncheck the DLC so they won’t load
2. copy or move the .esm and .bsa back to their original locations (or unzip if you did it that way)
3. delete the appropriate .esm and .bsa from the Fallout 3\Data folder
4. copy any saved games you want to use to your GFWL account saved game folder
5. use the utility to enable GFWL
6. launch FO3, log in to GFWL and play
Again, you may or may not have to redo any completed DLC quests
Hope this is helpful.
Possible Solution #2:
Download and install the unofficial Fallout 3 patch. Please do this at your own discretion. I haven’t tried the patch so I have no idea if it will fix the game.
Possible Solution #3:
Disable Games for Windows Live while playing Fallout 3: Broken Steel. You can download the Games for Windows Live Disabler here.
Problem #7: Saving causes Broken Steel to Crash
Possible Solution #1:
Try turning off auto-save.
Problem #8: Can’t find Paladin Tristan during the Death from Above quest
Possible Solution #1: By Mekkal (Thanks!)
Download the GECK mod tool and then manipulate the game data to make Paladin Tristan appear anywhere you want.
Problem #9: Can’t run mods properly after patch 1.5
Possible Solution #1: Download FO3Edit
Quoted from Fallout Nexus:
FO3Edit is an advanced graphical module viewer/editor and conflict detector.
When started it will automatically find your Fallout 3 Data directory. You then get a dialog to select which modules you want to load with the current selection from your plugins.txt as default value. Once you have confirmed that dialog the selected modules will start loading in the background. Depending on your system it should take 30 seconds to a few minutes (!) for all modules to load. You can follow the progress in the message window. (Don’t panic if it seems to freeze, it just takes time).

My game crashes right before I should see the “two weeks later” cinematic.
May 12th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Hi anon,
Do you have any mods installed?
May 12th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
great! you really saved me from a lot of wild guesses trying to play this erratic DLC. cheers for the compilation.
BTW, regarding problem #2, it must be read:
3) console: startquest 03000802 (Death from Above.) mind all the zeroes and 03 must be replaced by 01 if no previous DLC has been installed or 02 if only either The Pitt or Anchorage are present.
5) console: moveto player
May 12th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
my game crashes right when I enter the bulding to find paladin Tristan
May 13th, 2009 at 2:57 am
Help!
After completing take it back, 2 weeks later movie cannot start. Game ended with the credit.
Any solution?
May 13th, 2009 at 4:37 am
My game CTDs whenever I quicksave or if I’ve been playing for more than 5 minutes
May 13th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Hi guys,
To those who have random crashes, do you have any mods installed? Have you tried reinstalling the DLC, probably even redownloading?
I’m sorry if none of the solutions I have right now are solving your problems, but as I find more solutions and fixes to these, I will post it here. Broken Steel seems to be the glitchiest among the DLCs and it’s hard to pinpoint where the real problems are.
Oh and cheers to ~okl for the correction. I really appreciate it.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Freeman, I have never encountered that glitch before, but I will ask around about it. Hopefully I will be able to find a fix for you.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:55 am
Hey man,
I’m getting a crash on the Who Dares Wins quest, right after I’ve fired the payload and the place is about to self destruct. I go to exit the air base through the door that is right next to the terminal. Without fail every time it will crash to the desktop. Have no idea why, it’s been playing perfectly with everything else. Got the latest patch a few other mods too.
Any way to fix it?
May 14th, 2009 at 3:58 am
Hi Mylo,
I will try to come up with a fix to your problem. Oh and What mods do you have installed?
May 14th, 2009 at 5:56 am
Hi!
After speaking to Scribe Rothchild in the “Death from Above” quest, it says in my log that I have to go to the Car Tunnel in the far south-west corner of the map. But the quest-tracker directs me to the middle of the floor next to the library in A-ring, Citadel, where he obviously is not. I’ve tried to coc to the tunnel, but there’s just a bunch of scribes and fighters there, but no Paladin Tristan.. Anyone knows how to fix this? His spawn-code for instance?
May 14th, 2009 at 6:20 am
Much appreciated. I have unofficial fallout 3 patch, UPP-Pack 1, SG_Skillbooks redux, marks gameplay mod, anchorage, broken steel (obviously) and the pitt. Using Fallout Mod Manager to launch/manage them. Hope that helps. But there hasn’t been a mod conflict so far, so I’m just confused as to why it’s that particular part where lies the crash on loading the exterior.
May 14th, 2009 at 7:24 am
Mylo, are you using any items found during Operation Anchorage? Some people claim that uninstalling Anchorage solved some of their crash problems, I’m not sure if it will work for you though. Oh and have you updated the unofficial patch to v1.1.3? Anyway, I will keep digging for more answers. If you do find a fix, I would really appreciate it if you would post it here so others could benefit from it.
Mekkal, that’s strange, you should be briefed by Paladin Tristan when you arrive at the car tunnel. I’m not sure how to fix this, not a lot of people have encountered this problem… yet. I’m sorry if couldn’t be of anymore help as of the moment.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:45 am
I found a solution for those who knows a little of G.E.C.K
I just made a small mod where I added a new Paladin Tristan inside the car tunnel. Although when I was to see him at the very next quest, he was gone again :p
To fix that, I just updated my mod and put him somewhere it was easy to find him inside the Citadel.
It may not be the best fix, but it’s still a fix for those who have the same issues with BS.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Yep, I have some of the weaponry I got from the armory, upon completion of the anchorage simulation. But removing the expansion did nothing sadly, and I’ve tried a bunch of combinations of excluding certain mods etc. Also updated the unofficial patch, did nothing, rolled back to official patch 1.4, still the same. This is getting to be a slice of bum.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Mekkal, that’s an awesome fix! Thanks for posting about it.
Mylo, I haven’t found any fixes to your problem yet. You could reinstall or maybe even redownload BS coz it seems that one of the files could be corrupted, but I could be wrong. How about not logging into GFWL while playing BS, have you tried that?
May 16th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
In the first misson “Death from above”, after I talk to scribe rothchild, its sends me to some random location in citadel ring A, even though it says to go to the car tunnel. Theres nothing at the point it tells me to go to, and im not using any mods, just usually have god mode enabled.
May 16th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Hi 370forlife,
Another poster here, Mekkal, had the same problem. He solved it by using the GECK mod to make Paladin Tristan appear at the car tunnel. You can download the mod here — http://www.moddb.com/games/fallout-3/downloads/geck-mod-sdk
Thanks again to Mekkal for the solution.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Thanks! I was having the problem: “Problem: Game doesn’t exit properly, unable to exit, game crashes after exiting / exit” and the solution listed worked just great. Before, when I tried to exit the game, it’d always crash/hang and I’d have to use the program manager to close Fallout 3, which was very annoying. Now, the game exits as normal, which makes me breathe a sigh of relief. I hope Bethesda releases a patch for this problem soon.
I personally found my DLC saved in the directory:
“C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC\425307d6000000257e1a9f09170ffe1e6eb7546a7cc7a88f783a90″
May 18th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
hey , i have a problem too , my broken steel shuts down after 40-50 minutes , i searched alot to find afix , and i have better amd athlon 64 dual core and 9600 gt video card , and its a crash from broken steel it shuts my computer down , anyone knows a fix for that?
May 18th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Hi Tesla_s,
That’s a strange problem you got there. Can you go into details on how your pc shuts down?
May 18th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Yes i could , the good part is that the missions are completley without bugs , i have installed patch 1.5 , i have disabled all DLC’s from the data there is only a dlc checked that is Broken steel , every quest is perfect , when i play it like 20-40 minutes my computer shuts down , and the strange thing is that its shutting down cause of Broken steel , might be a crash i think
May 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I’ve got the same problem as freeman. the game wont continue after the end. you’d think the problem was that broken steel just isn’t installed but i had already gotten the message saying it was working, got to level 22 and fought hellfire troopers and super mutant overlords. so everything other then the actual quest part seems to be in working order.
any help?
May 18th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
And by the way , i discovered on my own how to make broken steeel fixed , so here it is , Re-install fallout 3 , do not delete the savegames , get patch 1.5 make sure that live is in fallout 3 , then make your online/offline account load a savegame at the end , let sarah start the purifier , this may work for other persons , but my problem is very harder to fix , broken steel is full of bugs because it was trickier for the creators to continue after the ending
May 19th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Thanks for the post, Tesla_s!
Vincent, I haven’t found a fix yet to your problem. But here a few suggestions that might help you out,
1. Uninstall all your mods
2. Try playing offline
3. Install the unofficial patch
4. Redownload BS
I can’t guarantee that any of these will work though and if you’re kind of iffy about the suggestions I gave, then don’t do it. These might raise another bunch of problems in this really buggy DLC.
Update: It seems that BS and maybe even patch 1.5 are conflicting with some mods. Some claim that uninstalling a particular mod has helped solved the problem. Here are some mods that you should probably stay away from for now: Martigen’s monster mod and the custom race mod.
May 20th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I’ve found the fix to my crash…
I disabled one of my dvd’s bcause i had 2 amd 64

May 20th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
i get stuck but have no mods, and have errors where the new content should be such as the hellfire armour.
also it tends to crash when i go through to different cells
if anyone can help please let me know
May 21st, 2009 at 5:01 am
hi
i have a problem my map keeps directing me to the library and the citadel on the death from above quest could anybody help me find a way of passing this without using the completequest console thing
May 21st, 2009 at 5:11 am
Hi flying_high,
You’re supposed to be heading to the car tunnel during that quest. Since you can’t get there via quick travel, I suggest you walk it. But you might have another problem once you get there, which is Paladin Tristan is nowhere to be found. The only solution I can give you right now is to download the GECK mod tool.
May 22nd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
thanks badguy
but im kinda new to this whole thing how will the GECK mod tool help? also i tried just skipping the level with the ‘completequest’ console command and the marker still sends me to the same place to talk to paladin tristan? :S im so confused
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm
When you get sent to the same place, do you get to talk to Paladin Tristan?
Regarding your first question, here’s the link to the video tutorial on how to use the mod tool — http://bethblog.com/index.php/2008/12/11/the-geck-is-here/ — and here’s the link to the written guide — http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Main_Page –
May 23rd, 2009 at 6:58 am
no i dont it just sets the marker and thats it, it is really bloody annoying
yeah i understand the GECK and how to use it but how can it help me change the marker?
thanks heaps for the help btw
May 23rd, 2009 at 7:18 am
Oh wait, have you spoken to Scribe Rothchild already? If you did but the marker is still at the citadel then head over to the car tunnel to meet Paladin Tristan. Just don’t mind t the marker for now. That’s a known glitch and I still have no idea how to fix it.
Anyway, the GECK becomes helpful once you arrive at the car tunnel and Paladin Tristan is nowhere to be found. What you need to do is use the GECK to place a Paladin Tristan in the spot you’re supposed to meet him then you can talk to him and continue with the quest.
May 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
yeah i have. ok so i can just add tristan to the game and continue… but does that help because i have tried walking over there and when i get there the gate is locked… is that meant to happen?
May 24th, 2009 at 12:28 am
hey sorry im being such a pain.
but how do i find the car tunnel in the GECK like there is no car tunnel in any of the world space lists unless its got a different name.
May 24th, 2009 at 1:38 am
Hehe, no problem
Anyway, here’s a link to the map to the Rockland Car Tunnel — http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/File:Rockland_Car_Tunnel_loc.jpg — and how about checking out the fallout wiki too, just to make sure that you didn’t miss anything — http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Death_From_Above –
May 24th, 2009 at 5:14 am
they dont really help but thanks for trying
i dont know what the problem is but hopefully its just a bug and never know it might fix itself
it wont but i can always hope lol
thanks a lot for the help though
May 24th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I’m sorry that I couldn’t be of anymore help but I will still keep searching for a fix. If you do find one, I would really appreciate it if you post it here so other visitors may benefit from it.
May 24th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
will do wish me luck hopefully something will come up soon
May 24th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
I had the same problem as Mylo. I uninstalled the ffdshow audio decoder from my computer and it went away. Check your start menu to see if you have that.
May 24th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
I have a game-breaking bug, wherein after I have elected to self destruct the mobile base, watched it explode, and then fly back to the citadel via vertibird, I exit and am in “haha, you can see what’s going on but you can’t do shit” mode, and nothing happens. I just stand there and no one approaches me, says anything, nothing.
Mods:
Anchorage, Pitt, and Broken Steel
Craft
Calibr
Mart’s Mutant Mod
FOOK
Dark Nights
Owned!
UPP perks
XFO
DK Bullet Time
NAPA-Sneak
May 25th, 2009 at 12:48 am
Hi Blasphemaster,
Try this fix:
Open console (~ Key) and type:
enableplayercontrols
May 25th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I’m having the same problem as flying_high.
I spawned Paladin Tristan through console (player.placeatme 03005686) and after I’ve talked to him, he walks past the gate to Rockland Tunnel (he doesn’t open it, just walks past it) and stops without opening the gate for me.
Any help would be much appreciated.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Thanks, worked perfectly.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Hi Green,
I still haven’t found any fixes to flying_high’s problem yet, but I will still try to solve yours since you were able to talk to Paladin Tristan.
What do you mean by “he walks pass the gate?” Does he walk through the gate but doesn’t open it? If he did then have you tried respawning him again and see what he will do?
May 25th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
No, he doesn’t walk through the gate, he just walks next to it (near the end of the fencing to the left) and stops walking. He doesn’t respond when I talk to him and if I respawn him, he does the exact same thing.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:53 am
Ok, I’m still not exactly sure where you met Paladin Tristan but here’s how the quest should go: You arrive outside of the Car Tunnel. You see a Brotherhood of Steel knight by the door. He tells you that Paladin Tristan is waiting for you inside. You enter the Car Tunnel and move down a rather long corridor until you reach an open area. This area is where Paladin Tristan is and is also probably where you’re supposed to spawn him if he’s not there.
I’m sorry if I didn’t completely understand your problem though
May 26th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
It’s alright, I believe I made a quick fix. I just used the “tcl” (no clip) command outside of the car tunnel gate. Then I spawned Paladin Tristan inside of the the actual car tunnel and everything has worked fine so far.
My bad for not being very clear in my problem.
May 27th, 2009 at 2:04 am
ok hey guys me again
i’v fixed it kind of i just coc’d to the car tunnel then after walking around for a bit and randomly talking to people paladin tristan just appeared and i completed the mission. so thats that but now the next mission says to speak to tristan again but coz the marker is still at the spot im not sure where he’s meant to be.
also i’ve noticed that the textures for a lot of the new content from borken steel isnt there properly and the colours are all weird… if anybody knows why please help me i can still play its just really damn annoying.
May 30th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Hi, can we have link exchange?? i already added you on my site.Care to visit it to confirm if I already added you. Hope You will add me too..Thank you.
May 31st, 2009 at 9:06 am
First off: badguy you rock, this page has helped me get through many different crashes. I am currently stuck on an intermittent crash that comes up when I save.. not consistent so I am just dealing with it.
I just got passed a crash where I could not leave the citadel at the start of the deathclaw quest. I have a ton of mods installed and what I have found works for me is to backup the “fake” 1.5 and real 1.5 versions of significant files (fallout.exe, falloutlauncher.exe, fallout.esm, etc..) and switch between the two as I run into crashes. Probably not the best solution but works so far… oh, and sometimes enabling or disabling the unofficial patch will get me past ctd’s.
flying_high: are you using 1.0.1.5 with a fake patch or are you using the real 1.5 version? I found that I see this quite a bit using the fake patch.
May 31st, 2009 at 10:54 am
Hehe, thanks for the complement, Saboosh. I really appreciate it
May 31st, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Everyone who loads mods should be aware that the 1.5 patch made some significant changes to the way mods are supposed to be created.
As a result, if you use a mod that hasnt been updated for 1.5 (most have not) you may run into issues.
As you mention above badguy, FO3Edit has some features to make mods work better in version 1.5.
It might be worth mentioning that there are specific instructions for using those features. FO3Edit, by default, is intended to allow you to edit a ton of different facets of Fallout 3, including mods, but does not fix anything for you unless you specifically tell it to.
There is a flag you can pass to F03Edit.exe which will turn on MasterUpdate mode which updates all of the mods that are currently supposed to be loaded to the version 1.5 specifications.
This is even supposed to fix the big mods like FOOK, MMM, and XFO (all of which I load)
——— Taken directly from ElminsterAu’s instructions: (NOTE THIS IS STILL BETA, I backed up*everything* before trying this.)
When running in MasterUpdate mode, the following operations are performed without further user interaction:
* all modules in the Data folder are assigned into 2 groups, masters and plugins, based on their file extension (.esm or .esp)
* the modules in each group are sorted by file modification date/time
* all module files are redated, first all masters, then all plugins, in 1 minute intervals
* all active modules are then loaded, the ESM flag set in the file header if not yet present, the ONAM subrecords build if required
* any temporary overriding worldspace record that have at least one previous version that is persistent are marked as persistent
* all modified modules are saved.
This makes it possible to take an existing setup using patch 1.4 or older which contains mods that are broken by the bugs in patch 1.5 to be updated to patch 1.5, and used with existing savegames without being messed up by the bugs in Patch 1.5.
As this function is still considered EXPERIMENTAL, please make sure you have a full backup of your Data folder and your save games before using it.
June 1st, 2009 at 12:36 am
hey saboosh
what would you consider a fake patch? like a nocd patch or something?
i got my patch from the FO3 website
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:55 am
Hey,
I completed fallout 3 but instead of showing the 2 weeks later cinematic the game crashes.
Have patch 1.5 installed and broken steel dlc. Have no other mods installed
June 3rd, 2009 at 7:45 am
i have The Pitt and it works just fine. But i downloaded broken steel (torrent) but i know i did everything correctly yet, it doesn’t appear in data files in the Fallout3 Launcher. if u think think its ’cause of the torrent doesn’t work, your wrong. Cause i play The Pitt and it works. and i got that also from a torrent. My computer is patched with 1.5 and my fallout disc is just a burned cd. not an original. Even mods won’t appear in the data files but i’m sure that they’re in the data folder. but the pitt and fallout3.esm are in the data files.
June 4th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Fixed my problem by moving the broken steel files to the fallout 3 data folder and disabling games for windows live
June 6th, 2009 at 2:42 am
hey ive downloaded broken steel from a torrent and im having trouble with Death from above. My marker tells me to go to the a ring but my quest tells me to go to the rockland car tunnel. i went to the rockland car tunnel and the gate is locked and theres no one there. i used player.placeatme 03005686(tristan) and when i talk to him, just as he opens his mouth the game crashes. ive tried everything. i dont use games for windows. ive even tried redownloading it from different torrents and installed the official 1.5 and unofficial patch.
June 6th, 2009 at 9:40 am
Hi Brad,
I’m not sure if I can help you there since I’m not familiar with the bugs and glitches of games that are distributed through torrents. You can try checking out the forums of the site you downloaded it from. It would be much better if you bought an original copy though. At least you will be giving Bethesda some money to spend on a better patch

fixed by re installing
June 7th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
After speaking to rothchild, and making my way to the rockland car tunnel to meet tristan, I activate the door to the tunnel, and the game crashes on the loading screen.
Anyone else have this problem? I’ve contacted customer support at bethsoft, but, they are thick and vague as ever.

Hi All,
I’ve been having the “Hang on Exit” problem with Broken Steel and I just wanted to let you all know that the fix described above works for me. BTW, I have F3 installed under Steam since I bought it as a download from Valve/Steam. I am also running Vista-64.
Just a few corrections/clarifications:
1) The directory where the GFWLive .bik files are under
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\DLC
Under the DLC directory, there are a series of numbered/cryptic directories, but in mine there was only one to go to each time and I eventually got to one which had a “broken-steel.png” file in it. In that directory, there is a “Content” directory which contains the .bik .esm and .bsa files. You may want to just search for “broken-steel.png”
2) The directory to copy the .bik files is the “Video” directory under the “fallout 3/Data” directory.
After checking the box for Broken Steel under Data Files, my game no longer hangs on Exit.
Cheers,
Ron

Okay…I have a huge problem.
After I’m told to go speak to Rothschild at the beginning of ‘Death from Above’ I find him and he tells me to stand next to the map…and thats it.
He doesn’t speak to me at all and I can’t continue the quest…its very aggravating and although I’ve found the problem at least 2 other times I’ve not found an adequate solution. One person suggested automatically completing that part of the quest, however after doing so I can’t open the door outside the Rockland Car tunnels.
So a solution for either of these problems would be wonderful.

Hi Michael,
Try this:
“Open the console and type “SetObjectiveCompleted DLC03BS1 10 1″ without quotes. This will skip the Rothchild conversation. Next, type “SetObjectiveDisplayed DLC03BS1 15 1″
If the quest name doesn’t work, you may have to use the ID instead. For DLC03BS1, it’s XX000802. The XX will depend on your mod load order. For me it was 03.

Hi Mitchell,
Do you have any mods installed?
June 8th, 2009 at 10:46 am
hello badguy001,
no I currently do not have any mods installed.
Admittedly I am using a save in which mods were used, but only retextures of the various sets of power armor. after I started having problems opening the door to the tunnel, I did a complete re-install of both the main game and Operation Anchorage/Broken Steel. As in the only thing I saved was the save games. I deleted the Bethesda folder in Program Files(x64) and all it’s contents, including the old Data folder.
I reverted to a save before the mission “take it back” and played through with no problems. I experience absolutely no bugs at all until i try to open the door to the rockland car tunnel.

No I don’t have any mods installed at this time.

leave console
Talk to this fu…. tristan and continue your quest
Key word : Broken steel - death from above - paladin tristan - bug - error - fix - appear - missed - nowhere - can’t find
June 16th, 2009 at 7:12 am
I am getting the hang on exiting Broken Steel also. I have tried for an hour to find the proper files to rename and move but cannot. I am on WinXP-32 and none the required folders are the same as what is listed in the solution. I have hidden folders visible. If anyone can give me a walk-thru, it would be greatly appreciated….. the crash is getting old.

Just wanted to say thanks to htintin for summerizing and everyone who helped find that fix THANK YOU,i can go on with my game
thanks again all.

I found a real solution to Problem #5: Can’t find Paladin Tristan.
When you encounter the bug you are lead to a hallway in the A ring, “~movetoqt” not sure why it does this, its weird. He is neither there or at the car tunnel (which is locked and such) “~tcl”. I noticed when i started the chain quests for broken steel, as you wake up, it doesn’t allow you to talk to Lyon’s. It starts there.
The problem being that when on the quest, “Take it back!” the quest was never finished (look at you quest completions and the “Cycle the air-lock” was never completed. Simple fix. Go back to the save before the occurrence and change the outcome. Kinda like time travel in a way. ^.^
I let Sarah get owned by the radiation first, then went back after i figured it out. I took the next one and the quest line from the beginning to meeting tirsitan has worked fine.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:34 am
paladin tristan is actually in the a-ring, right where the marker is.
talk to him and he’ll tell you to meet him at the car tunnel.
June 21st, 2009 at 2:50 am
when i get to the citadel and go to the lab to go on with the quest ” The American Dream” and everyone is there i walk up and the game just turns white and i cannot do anything. i am using the X-Box360 and i downloaded operation ancorage and broken steel
July 10th, 2009 at 4:16 am
If you have the free play mod installed, there is no way you can start broken steel without starting a new game? Even with the console?
July 18th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
I’ve recently just got all the DLC and have installed them. I also have a number of mods on (one being the free play mod). I had a problem with Fallout crashing after the ending scene but I seem to have resolved that with turning off some of the mods. Now, it seems I’m have a problem relating to Problem #2. Upon seeing the “Two weeks later” my screen fades into my character to being under the stretcher and I am unable to move, even with the ~enableplayercontrols command, My character is stuck in the lying on the stretcher animation and nothing, no Elder Lyons, seems to happen. I just lay their with the optional grunting/cough E button.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:11 am
For ‘Problem #7: Saving causes Fallout 3 to crash’ I found another solution that may work, if you have a large amount of save files (in excess of 500, I had about 700 when I started getting crashes) just delete or move as many of the saves as you can from the saves folder. I know a lot of players probably only have a few saves for each character, but for those of you like me, who make a new save every 10-20 minutes, this should help
July 29th, 2009 at 10:40 am
argyll what mods did you have to disable?
August 5th, 2009 at 12:43 am
I get “new downloadable content is available for this game” from GFWL as soon as I startup Fallout3, and if I click to accept the new content, the game freezes in mid-download. Only way to play is to refuse the new content and not sign in to WL. Funny, because it could very well be a patch to fix the crashing behavior, lol! No mods running here, BTW.
August 25th, 2009 at 5:50 am
Hey guys, been having the same problem as some mentioned above, Tristan is apparently in the corridor in the Citadel. I tried the player.placeatme which didn’t work… Also, I had to use the enableplayercontrols to move around at the start of BS, however, Lyons eventually showed up in the hospital on his own. Anyone know what I’m meant to do?
August 25th, 2009 at 7:06 am
Kaspersky, what quest are you in?
August 25th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I’m on Death From Above, exactly at the part where I need to meet Tristan at the tunnel.
If it makes any difference, I have the German version (English .exe to enable certain things) and an English BS. Played The Pitt and Mothership Zeta (also English) without any problems, don’t think there should be one here either.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Where did you spawn Tristan? You’re supposed to spawn him inside the car tunnel. And Don’t worry about your version of Fallout, it’s the patches that usually cause trouble.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Well, there arises the problem. I can’t spawn Tristan, says ‘Item 03005686 not found for parameter objectID’. Already used tcl to get into the car tunnel, everyone is there and so are the dead enclave soldiers, but Tristan is nowhere to be found. Marker tells me he’s in the Citadel though. I have the newest patch, which I believe is 1.7?
August 25th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Yes, you got the newest update. That’s odd though, the fallout editor should be able to spawn Tristan without any problems, unless something went wrong somewhere… Have you tried reinstalling the game? If that doesn’t help, try installing an older update. If you still can’t find or spawn Tristan, then try the unofficial fallout update.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Got it working mate, fiddled around with the GECK, saw that the encounter with Tristan was on None, so I changed it to the Citadel. He’s not at the tunnel and seemingly constantly ready to fight barehanded, but he’s there. Thanks a lot for the help, it was muchly appreciated. Will tell people about this site, very useful
September 4th, 2009 at 9:06 am
I’m having the same issue with stupid Tristand - He doesn’t appear and my marker is at the citadel! When I try to use the “placeatme” comand, I’m getting the same issue Kaspersky did “Item 03005686 not found for parameter objectID”. If the fix using the GECK, which I have downloaded, how do I add him using it?!!! I watched the tutorials and they do not help. I need a solution to this please.
September 8th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
hi, i have problem to start BS,
I wake up from the bed, Lyons stand few steps from me, talk to him > but he don’t have dialoge about the quest, new dialoge about sara, enclawa and this purer machine but none about new quest :/
i do this :

console: startquest 03000802 ( ill try 01000802, 02000802,03000802,04000802,05000802, when I type 3 or 5 console accept tis but nothing hapend(none quest are started) ( i have all DLC installed but only BS dont work)

5) console: moveto player (lyons on me
6) Talk to Lyons an recieve the first mission of broken steel ( he still dont have any new diloge about the quest :/
September 9th, 2009 at 6:11 am
Hi kirchoff,
When you wake up, Elder Lyons should automatically walks to you to initiate the “Death from Above” quest. Since that didn’t happen, did you get stuck when you speak to Lyons? You can’t get out of the dialogue part or something like that?
If so, then type this: “EnablePlayerControls” instead of completequest.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
i can normaly walk over the wasteland, Lyons not say to me anything, he just stay near the robot and after few minutes walk away to the lab, he has all his dialoge that he has whinout BS , new dialoge is about sara, what happends to enclawa and about the machine, none about death from above :/
sorry for text i still lerning english.
ps maby ending quest from president eden can help Lyons to talk to me automatically.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:36 am
Ok, the dialogue problem may have been caused by an installation error. Have you tried reinstalling the Broken Steel?
September 10th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
3 times i reinstall BS and f3, i serch forums for about 6 days for some new ideas why it not working.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
maby i’ll copy my save in rapid share and somebody can take this quest for me.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Ok, I wanted to start this in a new thread someone where but owell. Ive looked through many forums regarding all sorts of Fallout 3 problems but havent found anything quite so specific. Ive got The Pitt, Anchorage, Broken steel and Point lookout on, running windows 7 build 7100.
My problem is that after installing any of the patches .. 1.5/1.6/1.7.. it immediatley crashes to desktop (CTD) after pressing play at the launcher. Ive tried.. updating all drivers.. reinstalling fallout 3 times .. each using the 1.5/1.6/1.7.. patches after each reinstall. Ive tried going without the patches and using the commands on this original help link.. but i still get stuck.. which makes me presume i need the patches.. that loops back to my first problem. Ive also tried the ffdshow fix.. but adding fallout to the exception doesnt work either.. Also tried re-installing the addons respectively after each reinstall… So.. any ideas..

Any help would be appreciated.
Got no mods, only BS..

Solved my problem by replaying speeding through the main quest with a new char and adjusting levels/stats/items by using console commands.. 2 hours well spent -.-.
So I’m guessing my char file got corrupt at some point..
