Red Alert 3 may not exactly be the hot topic this time around especially with the recently released Empire: Total War ruling the RTS market. Nevertheless, there are still those who, despite the overwhelming popularity of the other RTS titles, cashed into Red Alert 3. But if you are one of those who just bought RA3 but is unfortunate enough to encounter glitches, errors and bugs preventing you from playing the game, then worry no more because you might find the solutions to your problems right here.

Problem #1: Game Freezes or goes to black screen after splash screen
Solution #1:
Update DirectX
Solution #2: (by subpuff from steam)
i had a backup of the game and i then completely removed the game and the registry and then restored the backup. it updated a bit then it worked again. its worth a try backing up the copy u already have and removing the reg. doesnt sound likely to work but u never know… worth a try right?
Solution #3:
For Steam users: try verifying the integrity of game cache
Solution #4: (by TheRainKing from steam)
Enable Eset’s advanced options. Go into the quarantine files . Direct Eset to restore quarantined files (warning!! may be obvious, but restore only the Command and Conquered quarantined files).
Solution #5: (by stanash from the commandandconquer forums)
I removed the movies from the data/movie directory, and the game worked great.
Problem #2: Can’t play online
Solution #1:
Turn off your virus scan
Solution #2: (by apt.pupil from the commandandconquerforums)
For those using routers, reconfigure your routers by following the instructions below:
XP Users
- click on start menu
- open the run command
- in the run window, type ” cmd “
- in the command prompt window(it has a black backround with plain white text) type ” ipconfig/all ” it will come with a bunch of results- what you want to see is your IP address.
- type the IP address as you see it on the window- into your internet browser. do not worry about the http://www. part- since this will make your browser think you are looking for this on the internet.
- the page that open up is your modem/ router configuration page. From here details will always differ for different modems/routers- but i will do my best to tell you where to look.
- we are trying to go into UPnP(User Plug n Play), firewall, or port settings. this will generally be displayed somewhere in the main menu.
- in there click on “create a new application” sometimes you may need to set the modem/router to allow for these, otherwise it will be set by default.
- name the new application Red Alert 3 and below you will find port configurations. i will now describe to you what you need to enter.
port type: UDP
port range(the port number to and from fields will need to be filled with this): 8088 to 28088
click add(not save)
port type: TCP
port range: 28910 to 28910
click add
port type: TCP
port range: 29900 to 29901
click add and then click the save button.
you have now created permissions for the game to use the required ports for online gameplay. next step is to add this game to the excepted applications list. and to do this- you will need to highlight the application you made and set it to the list of allowed applications.
Vista Users
Vista users can do something similar, however there is a different path.
for the sake of getting this done quickly- you need to press the windows key(the one on your keyboard that has a representative image of windows) and the ” r ” key at the same time.
this opens the run dialogue. simply follow the rest of the XP instructions and you are set to go.
NB: some modems/routers allow for what is called a DMZ(De Militarized Zone) what this does is set your modem to allow all applications to access all modem/ router ports.
For the sake of security- i DO NOT recommend this, since it means backdoor trojans and other nasties will have an all- access pass to do all sorts of evil things to your computer. If you have DMZ activated- turn this off. There are also reports of not being able to connect to online games still after setting your modem as a DMZ.
NB: Vista users may find that the UAC(User Account Control) will also block the games access to online play. It may also stop the game from running, requiring you to start the game up again. To remedy this- you either need to be an administrator or have access to one. open the run command, and enter ” msconfig ” and before you press enter- make sure the text below the line you are typing into says “run as administrator”. press enter. in this- you will find a program you should get to know and love- since this controls most of the basic windows admin controls- including which programs start up on computer boot. you need to go into the tools tab and scroll down to Disable UAC. highlight and click the launch button( a shame it is not a big red button tbh). reboot your pc and then open the windows security settings and select the “do not notify me of security problems” to get rid of vistas incessant nagging. To enable UAC and protect your computer from hidden intrustions again- go through the same process, but launch the enable UAC command
Problem #3: Can’t Download Patch 1.08

hi i have a similar issue but i dont hink the above solutions will work for me. im playing c&c ra3 on vista 64 ultimate. After a while the game always crashes to a gtrey screen with black lines or sometimes a blue screeen with lines (vertical lines), i tried installing the game in a different place on my pc becuase having WoW installed in program files x 86 was causing that game problems, but that had no effect either. ive updated my graphics drivers to the latest but still the issue persists. Other games i have dont crash, i can play WoW for hours and np crash but left 4 dead and C&C RA 3 always crash.
My rig : E4500 2.2ghz, Asus P5QL pro, 4 gb corsair c5, 600 w hyper psu, 1 tb samsung spinpoint f1, XFX xxx hd 4850 512 mb, running vista 64 ultimate

Daniel, Try turning your graphics settings down. And Have you lent the game to anyone? Or has anyone played your copy before you? I’m asking this because Red alert 3 also comes with securom.
Edit:
Here’s a couple of potential fixes for you guys:
- turn off all background tasks. Well, the ones you don’t need.
- reset your IP settings
August 28th, 2009 at 8:10 am
badguy001, no i have not lent the game to anyone. I am the only one who has ever used it. i Tried turning down my graphics settings, turned off all background tasks that i dont need, reset my IP settings. but it dident help at all.
August 28th, 2009 at 8:23 am
Here’s a useful post by a very helpful gamer, apt.pupil. I hope his fix works for you.
This will reset the network IP shown in the game’s network setting.
* Hold the windows key on your keyboard and press the r button.
* In the run dialog box, type %APPDATA% and press enter.
* This works for both – XP and Vista.
Go into the Red Alert 3 folder.
When in that folder you’ll see the Options.ini file, open it.
Search for:
GameSpyIPAddress = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (naturally there are other numbers)
To reset the routing for RA3 change these numbers to
0.0.0.0
Or simply remove the whole line.
Save and exit the file and online should work.
August 28th, 2009 at 9:20 am
i deleted that whole line.. but it dident help, the game still crashes when i try to join/make an online game.

At this point I would suggest giving EA’s customer service a call. But there’s still one more potential fix to this. And it has something to do with configuring your modem or router. What OS are you using?
August 28th, 2009 at 9:36 am
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium.

Here’s another fix that will configure your modem or router to play Red Alert 3. Thanks to apt.pupil for this possible fix.
You need to press the windows key(the one on your keyboard that has a representative image of windows) and the ” r ” key at the same time.
this opens the run dialogue.
in the run window, type ” cmd ”
in the command prompt window(it has a black backround with plain white text) type ” ipconfig/all ”

“we are trying to go into UPnP(User Plug n Play), firewall, or port settings. this will generally be displayed somewhere in the main menu.” i cant find UPnP,firewall or port settings.
August 28th, 2009 at 10:11 am
i clicked Advanced setup / nat /virtual servers i can now add applications. i belive this is the right place.
August 28th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Just in case you have online problems with other games, here’s an excellent site that will show you how to configure your router accordingly to the game you want to play: http://portforward.com/

i have created permissions for the game to use the required ports for online gameplay and added them to the excepted applications list. But i tried to join/make an online game it still gives me “Red Alert 3 has stopped responding and needs to be closed” msg…

August 28th, 2009 at 10:37 am

Hi i’ve been searching aroun d for posts about crashes with this game and ive found that it might be an issue with virtual memory. if your game is crashing and none of the above is helping try setting your virtual memory to max.

Hi Guys am new here, I bought RA3 when it first came out, being an avid fan of CC I played it immediately and loved it to death. Recently however I have tried to play it again and have found certain issues with it.
The installation goes ahaid without a glitch and when the game is activated the splash screen comes up fine. The ititial movies and main screen go ahead ok and I choose to play allies. After that it all goes weird. When the 1st mission load up starts off the game crashes with a black screen or just freezes and the comp requires a reboot. I have downloaded the correct patch and its up to date.
This is not the first game I have been having problems with and I think it could very well be as a result of the graphics card, it particular the drivers that are coming out nowadays. I have a Geforce 7600GT card and am experiencing HUGE problems running World of Warcraft, it freezes the game with the mouse stuck in the center still with sound going on. After alt-tab out the screen resets to what looks like 8 bit graphics and requires a complete reboot. This occurs when flying in and out of towns and cities and especially when entering Dalaran (if this means anything to you guys)
I have contacted Nvidia and have tried everything they asked to do (drivers and cleaning) Also no forums seem to have fixed this problem.
If anyone has any ideas how to resolve this issue so that I can at least play RA3 I would be very gratefull.

Hi, I bought this game yesterday and played it no problem. When I tried to play it today it wouldn’t load and the only way I can play it is buy uninstalling and it will start loading the game.
