Gears of War for the PC: Modified Executable Code Fix

Gamers enjoying the PC version of Gears of War have recently experienced a rather game breaking bug labeled as “Modified Executable Code.” Despite prompting them to reinstall Gears of War, the error still remains. The solution? You will be surprised at how simple the fix is.
Basically, all you have to do is set your internal PC clock to any date before January 28, 2009. Once you start the game, you might not be able to sign in Games For Windows Live. If that happens then minimize the game screen (don’t close it!) and change the internal clock back to its original date. You should be able to sign in after this.
What’s the reason for all these? Just check out the image below and notice the expiration date of this certificate issued to Epic Games.
It seems that Gears of War can only be played before the 28th of this month.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to delete any files. All you have to do is download and install the new Gears of War for Windows update — http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/Templates/Secondary.aspx?id=1364 —
I had a bit of trouble entering the site after verifying my age. It took me to the main page and not the update page. If this happens to you then just verify your age and then paste the link again to get to the update page.

That’s odd. Resetting the clock or downloading the patch should work. Which patch did you download? The English one? Is your Gears of War in English?
Hmmm… Have you tried setting the date to 2008 and also disabline your anti-virus softwares? It’s a long shot since you got the patch installed, but here’s hoping it works.

hey, i have made t work finally.. but the problem that i m encountering is that none of my check points are being saved… wat may be the reason ?? everytime i try to load a checkpoint, it keeps telling me, no checkpoints saved. . . plz help ~~

Hi hellboyvsk,
I assume that you’re referring to Gears of War 1 since the sequel doesn’t have a PC version. Anyway, the patch should have worked. Maybe your copy of GoW doesn’t work with the English patch. Then head over here: http://gearsofwar.xbox.com/pc/qfe1.htm and look for the appropriate update that matches the region of your copy of GoW.

Alright i downloaded the game, i installed the game, and then it decompressed the files. when im about to start the game the computer tells me “please insert the correct dvd-rom, click ok, and restart the application.”

Hi richard,
I’m not entirely sure how to fix your problem, but I think it has something to do with the lang.txt file in the gears of war binaries folder. Some people claim that changing the values will alter the language setting.
Or you could reinstall the game and choose the english language option before installing it.
About your save problems, try dowloading the latest update. Just scroll up and you will find it.

Hello guys!
I downloaded the Gears of war [PC-DVD] [Multi5] [www.topetorrent.com], installed it and when I ran I got this error “Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK, and restart the apllication”. So I pressed OK, restaerted the apllication and the same problem happened.
I tried many things to solve this problem:
1) I installed the patch provided above, and the “Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK, and restart the apllication” problem happened again.
2) With the patch I set my computer to 8/8/2008, ran the game, and the “Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, click OK, and restart the apllication” problem appeared again.
3) I cracked the game (with the patch installed) and ran it (with computer set to 8/8/2008 and 8/8/2009), but now another problem appeared “The wargame-g4wlive.exe found a problem and needs to be shut down”.
Conclusion: I couldn’t run the game, no matter what I do.
So if someone have another way to try solving this issue I appreciate =D

I have the same problem on how to make the GoW 2 working. Here’s the fixed that i do and luckily it worked. just download the file and read the REAM_ME.txt. hope this might help. By the way, mine is spanish version. i’m having a problem with the language fix. i’m still searching for the English language fix.. editing lang.txt won’t work. heres the link:

I get the game working with the date change, but that screws up my systems, and internet, cause they like the current date. I’ve tried various versions of this patch, and it only gives me this message
“Patch error: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No updates done since the file contents do not match”

Hi Denny,
That error message you got there usually means that the update wasn’t installed correctly. What you need to do is reinstall the game again, and then apply the patch.

There are a lot of reasons to why you’re getting that message. I suggest checking out Microsoft’s extensive list of fixes for this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;228985
Just scroll down to find the methods you need to follow to get Gears of War up and running.
If none of the fixes work, just shoot me a message and I will post a few more fixes for you to try out.

So, the game works for me and once again a smile came to my face, my heart rate went up as the Epic Games logo appeared just to well, do what it does best (scare the fuck out of you) make you ready to kick some ass but wait, what’s that? Oh it’s the LIVE thingy ahh right, no worries wait? Update? W00t? Alrighty then 0X80070002…Can’t download the update. Make sure you are connected to the internet. From one error to another… You could completely delete all the Gears of War file and reinstall again or you could try the following: (thanks to gjharwood, reddog187, and Braceface)
Possible fix: I’m not sure if this helps at all but after installing the LIVE update and finally killing/uninstalling AVG spyware/antivirus I’m able to run it without crashing.
I did uninstall AVG spyware and AVG anit-virus, also removed Google Web Accelerator. Not sure what I did but it worked. Some program was conflicting with it. Now it’s gone though.
Possible fix: Start game
go to options and turn off full screen
wait till it crashes
move crash window out way
go back to options and turn full screen back on!
Possible fix: hit start icon and click games under the music option to the right and then clicked on GoW icon.

it is working when i changed the system date…………
but still one problem persist ……..
when game start it is moving very fast and contionuously in one direction so it is impossible to play ………… plx help me with this problem…………..
