Game Brood Review: Resistance 2
Written by badguy001
Resistance 2 is an awesome game. It’s definitely a huge leap over resistance: Fall of Man and is easily my favorite FPS of 2008. But, the game still has its faults, which sucks, big time!
I will start with what sucks about the game first, which is the single player campaign. SP is just bad, as in really, really bad. I can’t remember how many times I’ve died at a certain section because: an enemy can kill me with one hit, my health doesn’t regenerate in time and there are just too many enemies on-screen that can throw fireballs at me. Difficult games are good, but Resistance 2 is just too difficult that it feels like the chimeras are cheating. No wonder mankind lost to them.

Story wise, it’s a bit of a disappointment. The lack of cutscenes and any form of storytelling that doesn’t involve cluttered radio chatter makes the plot progression a mess. And it was hard for me to pay attention to whoever was talking through Nathan Hale’s headset because I was too busy fending off the chimeran forces.
The single player campaign is a forgettable experience, but the multiplayer modes are what made Resistance 2 such an awesome game. The 8 player Co-op alone is reason enough to reccommend this to just about anyone who enojys action rpgs.
There are three different classes to choose from - Soldier, Spec-ops, Medic - which are so well balanced, it’s almost impossible to accomplish an objective without all three classes present in a team. The rpg element kicked in when I started raking in experience points from any chimera I shot and killed. The level cap for each class is thirty, which meant a whole lot of replay value. Although it does take a while to level up, being able to gain new abilities and access new weapon and armor upgrades makes the process worth it. And kicking ass with a beefed up level thirty Spec-ops when everyone else in the team were below level 10 was so much fun.

And then there’s the sixty-player competitive multiplayer mode. Aside from the standard deathmatch and teamdeathmach game types, there’s another mode called skirmish. This is quite possibly the best multiplayer game type since Assault in Unreal Tournament. But unlike Assault’s predetermined objectives, skirmish dynamically changes objectives on the fly.
The dynamic objectives help keep the match from falling into complete chaos since almost everyone feels compelled to follow it. So I am often in awe at seeing dozens of my teammates moving in groups, defending or attacking control points and assassinating certain targets. All done without the need of a headset. I’m sure that a bird’s eye perspective of the battlefield would make the entire scene look like something out of a real time strategy game.
So in short, the single player campaign sucks because of its difficulty and messy plot progression. On the other hand, it’s multiplayer modes are what makes this game stand out due to its extremely addictive 8-player Co-op and its fresh new take on objective based competitive multiplayer.
