So What Do Some Western Gamers Think of White Knight Chronicles?

Written by badguy001

White Knight Chronicles’ relatively low score given by Famitsu struck me as fairly odd. A lot of console JRPGs that were released this year scored quite well by that magazine (even though the same JRPGs weren’t that well recieved in the western market). So why the 29/40, Famitsu? Oh and while I’m at it, you guys really think Haze is that good?  Anyway, Famitsu have said their piece, so what about the gamers of the west? What do they think of White Knight Chronicles? Positive is the word that basically sums up all these impression:

This game is HUGE and it looks beautiful. It really is a next gen RPG; I don’t think even Square could have pulled off the sweet amount of detail and animations that the characters go through. The dodging/stumbling/blocking is really awesome when you first start noticing it. Even the monsters in the field have their own little personalities and the fights get much more interesting with all of the different animations.

Awesome animations? Awesome!

I like how when your character is in stun animation or on the ground, you can’t input any command even when the “ATB” bar is full until he recovers. I also like how you can make your char defend for as long as you want , so when you see a damaging attack coming you can defend and then as soon as you blocked the attack, you can get out of the defence stance and then counterattack. These are just two very subtle elements that are rather unique but makes the battles more action-oriented and requires a bit more player alert.

Counterattacks are awesome too! And yeah, I get his point.

After playing this, I don’t see how you can’t call this a next-gen RPG. No doubt in my mind this couldn’t have been done last gen, and saying otherwise is pretty silly. Between absolutely no loading times in huge areas and towns to the detailed characters and areas, the game really looks and plays wonderfully.

And by the looks of it, it seems that 1up shares the same opinion with these guys.

Despite these issues, my two days with White Knight Chronicles illustrated that highly valid, age-old point: Don’t believe everything you read. The game is no disaster, and all its issues could conceivably be addressed with a patch, or eliminated entirely from the forthcoming English version. It is immediately the best RPG on PlayStation 3, a platform that is desperate for a good one. Depending on how much the online mode has to offer, it may even have the potential to be great.

Well, I’m glad that there are a few harder than hardcore gamers out there who are willing to take some time out and post their impressions of this game. I would too if only I knew Japanese. Anyway, White Knight Chronicles is shaping up to be Sony’s knight in shining armor after all. Here’s hoping for more positive  impressions and reviews.
